Pilar Herrero is an Associate Professor at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain). Author of more than 80 peer-reviewed international publications and editor of more than 15 international publications, European Ph.D. in Computer Science and extraordinary Ph.D. Award, in the last few years, Prof. Herrero has been involved in the organization of more than a hundred international events. Modelo de aprendizaje para entornos distribuidos colaborativos

Un sistema o entorno colaborativo es aquél en el cual múltiples usuarios, por lo general agentes,... more Un sistema o entorno colaborativo es aquél en el cual múltiples usuarios, por lo general agentes, realizan tareas formadas por un conjunto de actividades, algunas de las cuales pudieran requerir la colaboración de otros usuarios (agentes). La necesidad de esta colaboración se puede originar principalmente por dos posibles razones: 1) Porque el usuario que debe ejecutar la tarea T = {A 1 , A 2 ,…, A p } está incapacitado (no posee la habilidad) para realizar una actividad específica A i (1 i p) y por lo tanto busca la colaboración de otro usuario que sí tenga la capacidad para realizar esta actividad A i. 2) Porque el usuario que debe ejecutar la tarea T = {A 1 , A 2 ,…, A p }, aún y cuando tiene la habilidad para realizar una actividad específica A i (1 i p), se encuentra en un momento dado en condiciones de saturación con respecto a la realización de Ai y, por lo tanto, este usuario busca acelerar, en términos de tiempo de ejecución, la realización de T mediante la colaboración de otro usuario que garantice realizar la actividad A i en menor tiempo. Ahora bien, por lo general estos usuarios/agentes se encuentran en localidades remotas, siendo entonces un entorno colaborativo distribuido o CDE (Collaborative Distributive Environment). En este sentido, el intercambio de información, el intercambio de solicitudes, el control de unos sobre otros y el intercambio de recursos computacionales son algunos ejemplos de la manera en la cual se puede llevar a cabo la colaboración de actividades para el cumplimiento de tareas. Sin embargo, el éxito del logro de la colaboración, entendiéndose por éxito alcanzar el logro de la actividad específica a colaborar en tiempos adecuados (eficiencia) y/u obtener una mayor calidad en los resultados (eficacia), depende de varios factores que tienen que ver principalmente con la forma en la cual el entorno está en un momento dado, así como también dar respuesta a preguntas tales como quién es el usuario más idóneo para solicitar colaboración y cómo realizar el proceso de colaboración. Además del presente capítulo introductorio, esta tesis contiene otros seis capítulos: Capítulo 2: Contiene una breve revisión de los conceptos y aspectos teóricos utilizados en la investigación. Capítulo 3: Presenta el estado del arte relativo a las áreas que tienen relación con esta investigación. Capítulo 4: Presenta la descripción detallada del modelo AMBAR y, por ende, la primera parte del desarrollo de la investigación. Capítulo 5: Contiene la segunda parte del desarrollo de la investigación, al describir la manera en la cual el modelo fue validado, tanto desde el punto de vista funcional como experimental. Capítulo 6: Presenta las conclusiones de la investigación. Capítulo 7: Muestra las líneas de trabajo futuro que se derivan de este trabajo.

Design and analysis of a load balancing strategy in Data Grids

Developing Data Grids has increasingly become a major concern to make Grids attractive for a wide... more Developing Data Grids has increasingly become a major concern to make Grids attractive for a wide range of data-intensive applications. Storage subsystems are most likely to be a performance bottleneck in Data Grids and, therefore, the focus of this paper is to design and evaluate a data-aware load-balancing strategy to improve the global usage of storage resources in Data Grids. We build a model to estimate the response time of job running at a local site or remote site. In light of this model, we can calculate slowdowns imposed on jobs in a Data Grid environment. Next, we propose a load-balancing strategy that aims to balance load of a Data Grid in such a judicious way that computation and storage resources in each site are simultaneously well utilized. We conduct experiments using a simulated Data Grid to analyze the performance of the proposed strategy. Experimental results confirm that our load-balancing strategy can achieve high performance for data-intensive jobs in Data Grid environments.

Many of the approaches presented within these fields exploit the performance enhancement and distribution, as inherent capabilities for improving their results. Furthermore, the heterogeneity and autonomy are "common denominator" of both solutions, grid and multiagent approaches. The purpose of this special issue is to present highperformance and distributed models, architectures and systems for grid environments. Some of these approaches are also based on research performed in the multiagent field. The set of technical papers presented in this volume has been made up by extended and modified papers from the GADA'06 (Grid computing, high-performAnce and Distributed Applications) Conference, which constituted a successful event in which researchers, developers and users exchanged ideas and works related to all these topics. This selection was the result of a difficult and thorough review process. These papers were received on June 14, 2006. Their first revision was made on July 2006, having two more posterior revisions in October-November 2006 and January-February 2007 before being definitively selected to make up the technical programme of this publication. The number of submissions-more than 70 high quality papers-and the diversity of the resulting programme are testimony of the interest in this up-and-coming area. G.V. Una prioridad en Sistemas de Agentes Virtuales Inteligentes (AVIs) y Sistemas Multi-Agentes Virtu... more Una prioridad en Sistemas de Agentes Virtuales Inteligentes (AVIs) y Sistemas Multi-Agentes Virtuales Inteligentes (mAVIs), es introducir una percepción sensitiva similar a la que poseen los seres humanos que permita que los AVIs perciban, en tiempo real, el entorno que le rodea con una claridad de percepción similar a la que poseen los seres humanos. Algunos estudios dentro del área de investigación cognitiva introducen la percepción humana como el primer nivel de un modelo de "awareness" (consciencia). Basándonos en estos estudios, se ha desarrollado un modelo de percepción basado en uno de los más conocidos modelos de "awareness" desarrollados para trabajo colaborativo (CSCW). Este modelo es conocido como "Modelo Espacial de Interacción" (MEI) y gobierna "awareness" en Entornos Virtuales Colaborativos (EVC). El modelo de percepción desarrollado extiende los conceptos fundamentales del MEI, introduciendo algunos factores propios de la percepción tanto visual como auditiva en humanos (como son la Agudeza Sensitiva o la Región de Transición Sensorial) y reinterpreta estos conceptos clave con el fin de introducirlos en el sistema perceptivo de un AVI. Una vez formalizado el modelo, se ha seleccionado una arquitectura de agentes para poder introducir, usar y validar este modelo. De entre todas las posibles arquitecturas, se ha seleccionado el Modelo de Triple Torre de Nilsson. La introducción de este modelo de percepción dentro de la arquitectura de agente seleccionada ha requerido la creación de un "motor de percepción" y un diseño semi-centralizado de percepción que permita manejar no sólo la percepción sensitiva del agente sino también algunos factores externos y adicionales tales como la atenuación.

DCP-Grid complements Web Services with some OGSI functionalities to implement the Two Phase Commit (2-PC) protocol to manage two types of Distribute Transactions, Concurrent and Conversational transactions, properly in this kind of environment. Although DCP-Grid is still under development at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, in this paper, we present the design and the general characteristics associated to the implementation of our proposed Framework.
