Simulation and Analysis the Attenuation Effect of Atmospheric Layers on a Laser Beam Within the Visible Range

The power and the size of the final spot of the laser beam reaching the target are very important... more The power and the size of the final spot of the laser beam reaching the target are very important requirements in most of the laser applications and fields such as medical, military, and scientific, so studying laser propagation in the atmosphere is a very important topic. The propagation of the laser beam through the atmosphere is subject to several attenuation processes that deplete the power and expand the beam. Through the simulation results of the free electron laser within the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum (400-700nm), it was found that the attenuation increases with decreasing wavelength. Laser propagation in the presence of rain and snow leads to a very large loss of power compared to propagation in normal weather conditions free of rain and snow. Atmospheric turbulence depends largely on changes in temperature, so the turbulence decreases with altitude from sea level, which makes laser work at high altitudes, such as the stratosphere, a good option with better results.

The effect of the Pierce parameter on the performance of the free electron laser system was shown... more The effect of the Pierce parameter on the performance of the free electron laser system was shown using MATLAB simulation.  Pierce parameter values ranged between (0.01-0.03) for the laser beam with long wavelengths.  The Pierce parameter represents the ratio between the saturation power and electrons power. The free electron laser is considered one of these important and advanced inventions because it provides a laser beam within various wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. In any laser system device, several parameters must be available on which the efficiency and performance of the laser system are dependent. The Pierce parameter is one of the important parameters in measuring the performance quality of the free electron laser. In this paper, the simulation results were obtained using the MATLAB program to show the important effect of the Pierce parameter on the performance of the free electron laser system. The simulation results showed that the values of the Pierce parameter ranged between (0.01-0.03) for the laser beam with long wavelengths, while it ranged between (0.001-0.0001) for the short wavelengths. The results showed an increase in the efficiency values of the free electron laser system with increasing the values of the Pierce parameter, which represents the ratio between the saturation power and the power of the electron; therefore, it can be used as a specific threshold to measure the efficiency of the laser system. Additionally, the simulation of the Pierce parameter has a direct relation to the small signal gain per unit length.

The major problem facing the development of civil and military laser applications lies in the att... more The major problem facing the development of civil and military laser applications lies in the attempts to obtain short pulses close to the length of the bond that connects the atoms of certain materials. In this paper, an executable program has been constructed to simulate and analyze the generation of ultra-short free electron laser pulses; it contains several parameters directing the creation of short pulses within a time duration of femtoseconds (fs). On analyzing the simulation results, it can be concluded that it is possible to generate ultra-short pulses with a duration of about 7.4-87.4 fs with the storage ring free-electron laser Fabry-Perot resonator with noticeably short wavelengths (11.4-190.2) for the output laser beam.

This paper discusses how the power of the free electron laser (FEL) beam was increased without in... more This paper discusses how the power of the free electron laser (FEL) beam was increased without increasing the size of the laser device by using a new model with a different technique for the undulator; the purpose of this technique is to make full use of the undulator magnets in a three-row system instead of the twomagnet system. This technique reduces the size of the laser device by decreasing the undulator's length and controlling the path of electrons within the rows of the undulator magnets. From the analysis of the obtained simulation results, it can be concluded that it is possible to make the FEL device with double the power output without increasing the size of the device; this will increase future applications of the FEL in the civil and military fields.

Due to the distinctive and impressive properties of the visible laser, it has been widely used in various areas of life. As a result, companies have produced many commercial lasers, especially those operating in the visible spectrum, to increase the demand for them by the organizers of festivals and artistic celebrations, which may have specifications contrary to safety requirements and are not classified within the four known classifications. In this paper, the two of the most important factors (MPE& NOHD) of visible laser pointers were calculated, whether these lasers were manufactured or will be manufactured in the future. It has been concluded that the effect of laser energy E is greater than the effect of the distance between an observer and a visible laser.

Due to the difficulty in manufacturing the resonator mirrors to produce a laser beam within the X... more Due to the difficulty in manufacturing the resonator mirrors to produce a laser beam within the X-ray wavelength range, as well as to eliminate the losses associated with the production of the laser beam inside the resonator. Therefore, it has been proposed to generate short-wavelength a free electron laser radiation pass through a long undulator without a resonator, called self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE). In this paper, a laser system was designed and simulated using Matlab program. A program has been created that contains many parameters. Through the results obtained for the values of power and wavelength in the case of the presence and absence of the resonator, it was concluded that it is possible to dispense with the resonator, and to obtain the same values of output power and wavelength by increasing the undulator length or the electron energy, to compensate for the absence of the resonator, which leads to an increase in the number of generated photons, thus an amplification of the laser radiation and output power.

Simulation and Analysis the Effect of the Lorentz Force in a Free Electron Laser Abstarct Due to the scientific and technical development in the free electron laser devices and the accompanying industrial and technological progress in various fields of civil and military life, it became necessary to expand the understanding of the mechanism of interaction of electrons (as an effective medium) with the magnetic field that they pass through to form coherent photons. In this paper, the Lorentz force effect is simulated and analysed. The results showed that the Lorentz force originates from the magnetic field, making the electron move through it oscillate. This sinusoidal motion of the electron causes it to emit two photons for every electron wavelength. It has been concluded that the electron velocity directly affects the Lorentz power and the wavelength and power of the output laser. Introduction At the beginning of the seventies the last century, John Madey [1] invented the free electron laser FEL, a new type of laser, that differs in its mechanism of action from the common lasers. All results are obtained by establishing a special program named “Disk optical modulator version 3" using the language visual basic 6 ahich contains many parameters. All models of optical modulator consist of twenty sectors, ten sectors are opaque and other ten sectors are transmitted for the laser. The number of sectors depends on several factors as chopping frequency, power transparent and modulation transfer function. It has been demonstrated by simulations, the optimal value of modulation transfer function is achieved when spot size of laser 0.3 mm and any increasing in spot size lead to decrease in MTF value.

The RMP is design using Auto CAD program, which consists of four patterns, each Pattern consists of twenty sectors, ten sectors are opaque and the other ten sectors are transparent for the laser. The number of sectors depends on several factors as chopping frequency of RMP, cutoff frequency of spot laser and modulation transfer function. All results obtained by design a special program named a “Reticle with Multi-Patterns RMP” which contains many parameters. To explain the impact of changing spot size of laser (As a result of the approaching target), we will change the radius of spot size between (0.1 to 0.6) cm, and then evaluate the best value of MTF which obtained when radius of spot size laser is equal 0.6 cm.

This paper presents a theoretical study to simulate the effect of turbulence attenuation and calculates the decrease of laser power in Iraq. The refractive index structure Cn 2 is very important parameter to measure the strength of the atmospheric turbulence, which is affected by microclimate conditions, propagation path, season and time in the day. The results of measurements and predictions are based on the Kolmogorov turbulence theory. It was demonstrated by simulations that the laser weapons in Iraq were severely affected due to the large change in temperatures, the limited effective range of laser weapon to a few kilometers as a result of high attenuation and the middle of stratosphere considered as a homogeneous and a suitable area for the work of laser weapons, so be a favorite area of fighter aircraft.

As a result of rapid progress in the development of offensive weapons, it became necessary to bui... more As a result of rapid progress in the development of offensive weapons, it became necessary to build up an effective defense system against these technically advanced weapons. In this paper, it has been designed and simulates a new defense system of free-electron laser DSFEL with important advantages capable of destroying air targets (static or mobile) within a range of 70 km from the ground level. The proposed defense system consists of three main units a free electron Laser, optical lenses and control system. Numerous parameters were computed, beginning from the specification and quality of free electron Laser and atmosphere attenuation affecting on the laser beam, in addition to the quality of the target should be destroyed. The results of simulations show that the possibility of destroying any target with high precision despite the large attenuation that occurs to the laser beam such as absorption, scattering, turbulence, and reflection. It is clear through simulations that the original power of laser beam will be significantly reduced as a result of numerous and varied losses as they pass through the atmosphere. But as a final result, the laser can be used as an effective weapon to destroy long-range targets.

At present, there is a significant growth in the number of research completed to take advantage o... more At present, there is a significant growth in the number of research completed to take advantage of the free electron laser FEL beam in all applied scientific fields. These applications depend on the unique characteristics of free electron laser such as the virtue of the tune ability, short pulse length and micro pulse energy/peak. In this paper, it has been designing a new model of High-Energy Free Electron Laser HEFEL within the ultraviolet range with an energy beam about 380 MeV. Also, it has been the optimized design for the amplifier of the output power by using a suitable resonator. All results have been obtained by designing a program that contains many parameters, through which a complete simulation of nature and shape for output laser beam has been created.
