In national schools,
foreign teachers started being recruited and they joined the first group of docents of the
Instituto Superior Técnico, to which some teachers of the previously Instituto Comercial
de Lisboa became associated, as well as other docents, selected by their technical and scientifical knowledge and achievements in professional practice.
One of the main contributions of this analysis resides in verifying, through the reference of the individual processes of foreign teachers in IST, how decisive this national and European network of engineers was in the choice to hire those teachers, and how Portugal was framed in a supranational network of mobility of specialists and of circulation of knowledge.

The work presents an interdisciplinary analysis and a synthesis about the theme of plastics combining different approaches. The texts are signed by a vast team of researchers and consultants who participated in the project and entrepreneurs of the sector. Among them are the specialists Elvira Callapez, Paulina Mata, Ana Maria Ramos and Teresa Salomé Mota. Together the essays allow us to learn about the hitherto untold history of plastics in Portugal, beginning with the success of Bakelite, and presenting various manufacturing processes, evolution and industrialization of polymers throughout the decades of the twentieth century.

The dire prospect of an oil cutoff gave sufficient and immediate impetus for Japan to begin searching frantically for alternative energy sources. Starting in 1974, the state-sponsored Sunshine Project, which originated from concern about the country's excessive oil dependency-rather than being a direct response to the oil crisis-mobilised the technological and financial resources for finding viable energy alternatives and implemented a number of state-funded projects. One of the most successful enterprises was the development of solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation, and, as a consequence, the household solar PV panel penetrated into the consumer market in the 1990s, comparatively earlier than most of the developed nations. The existing literature tends to focus on the economic incentive provided by state subsidy. However, the diffusion of the solar panel in Japan calls for a more nuanced explanation. A certain degree of social acceptance was needed before a large number of consumers embraced a new energy technology to the extent that they were willing to pay for the initial cost. The social acceptance for using a new technology was, in turn, based on pre-existing knowledge about the technology. This paper aims at shedding light on the pathways through which the knowledge about solar energy proliferated in the Japanese society, by focusing on solar energy demonstration and exhibitions-these forms of knowledge circulation had their roots in the penetration of the solar water heater in rural areas of Japan in the immediate post-WWII period.

Alfredo Bensaúde: A “revolutionary” in the training of engineers

He was a visionary of progress and was aware of the need to connect the education with technological innovation, institutional reforms, and economic growth. The establishment of the Republic in 1910 created a favourable context to reform and innovate the previous education structures. In 25 of May of 1911, the new government established a new Decree-law where it states the need to reorganise all public instruction highlighting that our delay comes only from the insufficiency of our technical teaching industrial schools are flawed in their installations, equipment and pedagogical standards. In 1911, when the Instituto Superior Técnico (Technical Institute) was created Alfredo Bensaúde was chosen as director. The new project was based on an essential premise: the existence of administrative autonomy, giving the Director the necessary power to implement the pedagogical program without intermediaries or constraints. The new school invested in theoretical-practical teaching where workshops and laboratories, as well as the library, played an essential role in the educational project. The Instituto Superior Técnico intends to establish a frontier between the former Industrial Institutes and Polytechnic Schools and new teaching of engineering, believing that education and science should be the basis of the growth of the economy in the 20thcentury.

In this paper we want to analyse the new pedagogical projects of Instituto Superior Técnico and Faculdade Técnica of University of Porto, and identify the academic and business networks linked to these schools. For this approach we will try to make a comparison between the creation and teaching of the two schools and the professors of each one.publishersversionpublishe

Bento (a railway station of S. Bento), Palácio da Bolsa (Palace of the Stock Exchange) and the Shot Tower of lead balls for hunting. We want to present each building and found what they have in common and how way they can be linked: by its date of construction, by its founders, by its function and finally by representing the bourgeoisie power in the city at the end of the XIX century and in the first decades of the twentieth century. These three building are points of an historical and touristic itinerary but they have different impacts and conditions: the railway station of S. Bento is a public space, belonging to the Portuguese Railway Company – Comboios de Portugal – it is a national monument since 1997 and even today it’s full of passengers and tourists. The Palácio of Bolsa (Palace of Stock Exchange) belongs to the Commercial Association of Po...
