These solutions lead to the use of urban computing techniques to address their daily life issues. Data-centric solutions have become popular due to the emergence of data science. The chapter describes and discusses the type of urban challenges and how data science in urban computing can face them. Current solutions address a spectrum that goes from data harvesting techniques to decision making support. Finally, the chapter also puts in perspective families of strategies developed in the state of the art for addressing urban problems and exhibits guidelines that can lead to a methodological understanding of these strategies.

Our goal is to represent the most realistic possible scenarios in a city. Due to the high demand of resources a GPU Cluster is used. We use real data from which we identify the behavior of the masses applying statistical and artificial intelligence techniques. In order to take advantge of the processing power of the GPU cluster we use the following programming models during the characters simulation: MPI, OmpSs and CUDA. We developed different visualization schemes: a) In situ, b) Streaming, c) Web. The web scheme is the most flexible, allowing to interact in real time with the simulation through a web browser. For this scheme we use WebGL and Cesium.

It can be used to specify and generate event managers well-adapted to support communication, cooperation, data exchange, etc. among components of such systems. The contribution of this work is related to two main aspects. The rst concerns the approach we adopted. Diierent from most existing event supports that provide limited event description models and xed management models, ADEES can be extended and customized on a per-application basis. It is not another \one-size-ts-all" event manager! It is used to generate event managers adopted by components to produce and consume events according to the event description and event management models they need (e.g. event as anonymous messages, speciic composite event operators, synchronous/asynchronous detection, push/pull protocol). The second aspect concerns the ability of a event service and event managers...

The proposal is based on query rewriting techniques that given an initial query they can provide sets of queries that can help data scientists to better exploit data collections. We apply our approach in the context of the project Exploring the History of Climate Change in Latin America through Newspaper Articles funded by the Panamerican Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) where data scientists explore newspapers to track articles reporting climatologic events.

This cyber threat continues to grow even with the development of new protection technologies. Developing mechanisms to detect this threat is a current challenge in network security. This article presents a machine learning- (ML-) based DoS detection system. The proposed approach makes inferences based on signatures previously extracted from samples of network traffic. The experiments were performed using four modern benchmark datasets. The results show an online detection rate (DR) of attacks above 96%, with high precision (PREC) and low false alarm rate (FAR) using a sampling rate (SR) of 20% of network traffic.

ECLOUDSS: Building E-government Clouds using Distributed Semantic Services
The objective of E-CLOUDSS is to propose an infrastructure for mashing up reliable semantic servi... more The objective of E-CLOUDSS is to propose an infrastructure for mashing up reliable semantic services for building e- government clouds. Mashups represent a new wave for building Web applications. A mashup is an application that presents content available from different sources by reusing the contents provided by third parties (e.g Web pages, Web services). A service is an autonomous software that offers some functionality through a network. Services coordination can be used for mashing up services and thereby specifying application logic by (i) capturing the interactions and dependencies among services; and (ii) by specifying reliability properties that the system must ensure in order to ensure QoS requirements such as connection, security, availability, persistency, etc. Therefore the project addresses the specification of reliable semantic web services. E-CLOUDSS addresses the management (definition and enforcing at execution time) of non functional properties associated to services? coordination for building reliable mash-ups. Effective ways to perform virtual executions is one of the main subjects of study of E-CLOUDSS. Depending on the knowledge and optionality degree of the concrete WS, different compilation scenarios arise which derive in turn into different execution mechanisms of the orchestation. E-CLOUDSS proposes to study the combination of the transformations using program fusion and generic programming. E-CLOUDSS contributes to the mashingup of services for building e-government clouds and contributes to the development of solutions for promoting the economic and technologic development of the Latin American governments administrations. Technology transfer is one of the goals of the project. E-CLOUDSS will develop general fundamental research topics that are in the centre of advanced research in systems construction and architectures. E- CLOUDSS will contribute to show the strong points of LA fundamental research on Computer Science and Information Technologies. Concerning social impact, e-government and e-economy must be developed and promoted in LA. Global markets and production chains are a reality in any region of the world and particularly in LA. Thus, having tools for implementing systems for supporting information and data exchange, along with the automatization of processes, will certainly contribute to the economic development of the region. Separating the semantic and the functional aspects for mashing up services, makes the approach easy to reproduce for any country, by modeling the particularities of the context. The consortium of E-CLOUDSS will also help to have a generic solution adaptable for the three participating countries.

Building data management services in clouds
Cloud computing is facilitating unlimited access to the computing and storage resources needed to... more Cloud computing is facilitating unlimited access to the computing and storage resources needed to build applications. The underlying infrastructure manages such resources transparently, without demanding the application manage or reserve more resources than those it really requires. Therefore, database management systems have exploded into cloud services that must be tuned and composed for efficiently and cost-effectively managing, querying, and exploiting huge data sets. In this talk, we will address a querying approach that consists of composing services that provide data and data management functions (aggregation, storage, refreshment). We will discuss how query processing is tuned with respect to the cost of accessing data and services, the cost of using cloud resources for executing the query, and the mashing up of results according to quality dimensions of completeness, data provenance, and data freshness. We will examine how this approach has provided solutions for e-government applications that integrate services from different countries.

In service composition functional aspects have been successfully addressed. However transactional properties have been poorly addressed using ad-hoc solutions at the back end of the systems. This situation makes current applications not reliable and not adaptable to existing distributed environments (i.e. Internet). The objective of our research is proposing mechanisms for adding transactional behavior to services coordination.

Defining and Coordinating Open-Services

Provided a set of services a workflow is used to coordinate and to synchronize their executions. This paper proposes an approach based on workflow technology and an associated mechanism for defining and coordinating services. Given a service provider that exports a set of methods a workflow can be defined for coordinating calls to such methods, in order to program a service. A service definition is decoupled from the capabilities of the service provider, thus a service may be adapted according to different application requirements. Services coordination is carried out by an orchestrator workflow that provides a fine control on their executions. Definition and coordination are characterized by a set of properties that ensure the correct behaviour of the resulting application (service).

Notable efforts have been made recently from both researchers and industrials to support the construction of service-based applications; nevertheless several issues still need to be tackled including service definition and adaptation, and services orchestration. This work proposes Pyros, an environment for building and orchestrating open services. An open service is represented by a workflow that coordinates calls to service provider methods. Thereby component activities and the way they are synchronized are rendered visible. In order to finely orchestrate services, they are associated with entry points. An entry point acts as a gateway for inserting and getting information about the progress of service execution. The paper details the approach adopted by Pyros for building and orchestrating services, and presents associated architectural choices. Furthermore, it reports an experimentation that we conducted for implementing an eTrader application using Pyros.

Human stampedes caused by panic and overcrowding occur frequently as a result of abnormal events ... more Human stampedes caused by panic and overcrowding occur frequently as a result of abnormal events (e.g., a fire or explosion) produced in collective events (e.g., religious pilgrimages, music concerts and sportive events). These events provoke panic and when people are agglomerated they try to escape pushing each other without realizing that others are being crushed. Since crowds can consist of individuals with diverse physical and social characteristics determined by cultural diversity, it is difficult to configure the space in advance and find solutions in real-time to save people and reduce catastrophe. This paper proposes an approach to explore the impact of anthropometry and cultural diversity in the behaviour of crowds in panic situations. Our approach includes techniques for reproducing and simulating the behaviour of the crowd to generate models that can help decision making to control such situations. The main contribution of our work is to use computational science, data processing and visualization techniques to perform our simulation and study, for eventually supporting critical decision making.
