The article reviews the early career of the Genoese painter Bernardo Castello (c. 1559-1629). Foc... more The article reviews the early career of the Genoese painter Bernardo Castello (c. 1559-1629). Focusing on the five-year period 1579-1584, the author seeks to enhance a long-standing critical view that read his initial phase solely through the style of his teachers Andrea Semino and Luca Cambiaso. New attributions put forward here – including the Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew (1579) in the Pinacoteca dei Cappuccini, Voltaggio, which would now become his first known painting – cast light on the Young Castello’s adoption of the legacy of Raphael in Genoa, by way of Perino del Vaga and Giulio Romano, as well as through prints.
