L’obiettivo dello studio e verificare l’effettiva differenza fra i tratti prosodici di italiani e... more L’obiettivo dello studio e verificare l’effettiva differenza fra i tratti prosodici di italiani e appartenenti alla CNI in Slovenia. Il corpus, che consiste in filmati di previsioni meteo ripresi delle TV nazionali Sky e La7 e TvKoper-Capodistria (TvK/C) e stato dapprima trascritto ortograficamente per individuare il lessico comune e successivamente analizzato e studiato. L’intento dello studio e quello di verificare la presenza di differenze nel pitch e nella durata delle vocali e delle parole. I file delle previsioni meteo sono stati analizzati con il software per l’analisi acustica dei dati Praat. Sebbene ci siano delle differenze nella prosodia dei parlanti, queste non sono risultate particolarmente rilevanti da poter affermare con certezza l’esistenza di tratti prosodici diversi dovuti all'influenza dell’altra lingua (sloveno).

This study discusses aspects of doctor-patient communication and presents a preliminary analysis ... more This study discusses aspects of doctor-patient communication and presents a preliminary analysis of doctor-patient interactions in Italy. The aim is to gain information on how (mis)communication between doctors and patients may affect the doctor-patient relationship and may lead patients to lack trust in their doctors. The authors use a corpus of existing audio-video materials on Italian doctor-patient interactions, and analyse doctors’ use of verbal and nonverbal expressions in their exchanges with their patients. The analysis is aimed to identify which features may engender communication problems –leading to misunderstandings and the perception of doctors as distant or unreliable. The preliminary findings reveal that patients’ lack of trust in doctors may also be the result of doctors’ use of culture-specific patterns of verbal and nonverbal expressions, for example certain sentences used for minimizing patients’ fears, specific postures and gestures signalling distance or closure...
Gestures and speech are two interconnected features of human communication. Studies have shown th... more Gestures and speech are two interconnected features of human communication. Studies have shown that they develop together and they both covey semantic and pragmatic meanings (Kendon, 2004; McNeill, 1992). Furthermore, gestures seem to be also linked to the prosodic features of speech since they also share synchronicity aspects and are often temporally aligned (McClave, 1991; Esteve-Gibert & Prieto, 2013). The co-production of gestures and speech, thus, seems to have a number of different functions both at the cognitive and at the communicative levels. On the one hand, in fact, gestures seem to help the process of speaking: they have a scaffolding function in the lexical and rhythmical organization of speech and they help information packaging (Butterworth & Beattie, 1978; Esteve-Gibert et al., 2014; Krauss et al, 1996; Kita, 2000, 2010).
