Instead, it's about refashioning what already exists, the ideas that you have, the concepts that you have are tools that will empower you to do more than you could without them. The aim was to involve a whole community in a music enrichment program that brought together primary and secondary students, teachers, community musicians, members of the community and musicians from outside the area with a broad range of objectives. This paper reports on the impact of the Music Generator Project on the primary students involved. It would appear that the students generally had a very positive attitude towards music and their involvement in musical activities prior to the implementation of the project and this positive attitude was present throughout the program. It does appear, however, from quantitative data that a potentially significant impact occurred with students whose attitudes towards music were ambivalent or negative prior to the project.

Musical Futures and informal music pedagogy: Historical perspectives and factors of success

This chapter explores informal music pedagogy and Musical Futures from an historical perspective. We map broad movements related to classroom music education across the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia over the last 50 years, and describe the three broad themes that emerged. In light of these movements, we examine the adoption of Musical Futures, and in particular, its professional learning model via a small study undertaken in Australia. We propose that the investment of money and time in not only research and development, but also a comprehensive implementation plan including professional development and open-access resources, are the keys to the global take up of the approach.
Teaching with Art in Mind

We make claims that not only bring the arts into the mainstream curriculum, but seek to place them right at the centre of classroom practice, in the process dismantling the myth of the 'crowded curriculum' in primary schooling. To validate these claims in terms of classroom practice, we examine the relationship between the arts and the school classroom - what gets taught there, why and how: in other words the pedagogy. We start by distinguishing the characteristics of the school classroom, its timetabled activities and its occupants, along the way making distinctions between today's creative classroom, yesterday's orthodox classroom, and tomorrow's potential classroom.
