The adequate project selection allows companies to invest resources in specific initiatives that ... more The adequate project selection allows companies to invest resources in specific initiatives that allow them to achieve their strategic objectives and to become more competitive. In contrast, non-adequate projects selection can burden the organizations with large investments that do not impact positively in the organization in general. This paper shows an application of Promethee I method, fifth version, as a multi-criteria method to support the strategic projects selection process, and a sensitivity analysis that were both carried out at the beginning of the planning period in a Colombian holding company. The application of Promethee I in a base scenario, and the development of two alternative scenarios allowed to identify that in the case study's portfolio there are projects with a very high preference, regardless of the criteria weight. Similarly, it allowed to identify the least preferred projects. These results are an important input for projects selection decision-making to be carried out by the holding company board of directors. Moreover, it was identified that the case study's holding company should focus efforts on the relative weights definition and on the measurement scale of each criterion, as this has a significant impact on the results obtained.

Purpose-The main purpose of this research project was to analyse the project risk management prac... more Purpose-The main purpose of this research project was to analyse the project risk management practices in an automotive company, in order to recommend appropriate improvements. Design/methodology/approach-The research methodology chosen to conduct the study was case study, since the research was carried out in a multinational company in the automotive industry, and data was collected through observation, document analysis and a questionnaire. Findings-Although the company has defined how to approach project risk management, it was found out that the reality experienced does not reflect what is proposed by the major references. The proposal for an approach to risk management, process by process, was well received and appreciated by the project team. Research limitations/implications-Due to the size of company, and also in some cases due to confidentiality reasons, it was not possible to obtain all the necessary data for a more accurate analysis. Additionally, due to the work routine, communication with colleagues was rarely immediate or fluid. It is also important to highlight the fact that project risk management is not an established practice within the organization. Originality/value-Risk management practices as other project management practices are context dependent and should be adapted to the situation. Other companies working with a similar context can benefit from this study and adopt similar procedures to improve their risk management practices.

It compares two recent methodologies, PM2 and PRiSMTM, and provides a practical contribution by advocating for the adoption of these sustainability-driven practices among practitioners. Sustainability remains relatively unknown in the realm of project management, and this study aims to bridge that gap. This study follows an interpretivist philosophy and employs a combination of interviews and archival data analysis. PM2, created by the European Commission, provides a project management methodology free to organizations and includes best practices from other bodies of knowledge. A general overview on the methodologies was also made, either on the perspective of the traditional based methodologies or the Lean and Agile methodologies. SLR results revealed more than 3500 papers. After filtering and applying exclusion criteria, just 80 were analysed. Main findings were that, in spite of some reserves, project management methodologies based on Lean are used. Nevertheless, Agile methodologies are the most used.

This paper aims to help professionals involved in industrialization projects, by presenting a new systematic approach to stakeholder management. This research was carried out in a professional environment, at the company Bosch Car Multimedia in which Project Management Office managers detected a gap in the process of managing stakeholders in the project management area. Given the increasing number of industrialization projects starting in the company, the development of a systematic approach to stakeholder management is highly important. Having an increasingly active, thoughtful and wellstructured stakeholder management, contributes to the achieving of the projects' success.

Its practices have revealed to be crucial in deadlines accomplishment, costs reduction, quality requirements satisfaction, among other benefits. This research was developed as a case study in an automotive company with the aim of developing a framework for visual management of capacities in industrialization projects to tackle overload situations of project managers. The model developed considers industrialization project management a standard process that usually calls for a tipical set of activities, whose duration and effort are defined according to project complexity. The proposed activity scheduling process results from an adaption of Heuristic based Priority Rules, aligned with the problem specifications.

Throughout the years, project management has been essential to the success of projects in organiz... more Throughout the years, project management has been essential to the success of projects in organizations and if it is implemented correctly, it helps to achieve the demanding, urgent and competitive goals that companies are experiencing. This paper presents an implementation and adaptation of project management practices to the projects from the purchasing section of a company where employees have to manage people, information and resources. The implementation was developed considering the projects associated to the nomination of a supplier and the mechanical parts approval. It was used the project management standard from Project Management Institute (PMI). The research has shown, using PERT, that the expected duration of this type of projects is about 446 days and the probability of finishing a project within a year is only about 10%. This paper is based on a case study performed in a Shared Service Center from SEG Automotive grou... more This paper is based on a case study performed in a Shared Service Center from SEG Automotive group, a former automotive division from Bosch. Due to the Bosch decision of selling the business unit of Starter Motors and Generators, it was required to create a Shared Service Center which performed the processes, until then executed by central departments to all Bosch divisions. This paper will focus on the project of processes transfer from the Bosch departments to the Shared Service Center. Through semi-structured interviews to the leadership team, it was intended to identify the major risks and issues of those projects and its critical success factors, in order to allow the management to work on measures that can avoid the risks and issues and potentiate the project success. The results show the importance of the alignment and cooperation of all stakeholders during the whole project life. It turns also clear the need of a project manager that leads the project, guides the team and has authority for decisions making. Moreover, the influence of the project team within the project is clear, being crucial to have experience, flexibility and multilanguage knowledge.

Nevertheless, such process begins with risk assessment and evaluation. In this research project, a detailed analysis of the methodologies used to treat risks in investment projects adopted by the Banco da Amazonia S.A. was made. Investment projects submitted to the FNO (Constitutional Fund for Financing the North) during 2011 and 2012 were considered for that purpose. It was found that the evaluators of this credit institution use multiple indicators for risk assessment which assume a central role in terms of decision-making and contribute for the approval or the rejection of the submitted projects; namely, the proven ability to pay, the financial records of project promotors, several financial restrictions, level of equity, level of financial indebtedness, evidence of the existence of a consumer market, the proven experience of the partners/owners in the business, environmental aspects, etc. Furthermore, the bank has technological systems to support the risk assessment process, an internal communication system and a unique system for the management of operational risk.

Purpose-This paper proposes a decision support model that can be used to help decide the destinat... more Purpose-This paper proposes a decision support model that can be used to help decide the destination of defective products, for mass production industries. The objective of this model is to reduce the cost of the defect, and consequently reduce the total quality costs. Design/methodology/approach-The decision model was developed based on the theory of quality costs and decision-making models, considering the practical aspects of reality through data collection, observation and experience in Industrial Pole of Manaus (Brazil) industries. A decision model adjusted to reality assists in the construction of the decision process, indicating the facts, data collection and the planning of the actions to choose the best alternative. Findings-The specific contributions of this research are: (1) define a sequential structure of actions, effects and costs associated with defective items; (2) allow a comprehensive approach to failure costs, including various elements of lost opportunity costs; (3) minimize failure costs, and consequently reduce total quality costs, without necessarily investing in prevention and assessment; (4) describe the use and application of the built theory; (5) identify the quality cost elements most representative in existence of defective items; and (6) identify improvement points in the management of possible future defective items. Originality/value-Much of the work of implementation of quality cost models do not emphasize the analysis of the destination of defective items. Also, there are no studies that use decision models with identification, accounting and evaluation of effects and criteria of quality, productivity and cost to define the destination of manufacture defective items.

Yet, treatments of the well-known 'resource constrained project scheduling problem' have been deterministic and static, and have addressed mostly unimodal activities. We present an approach to resource allocation under stochastic conditions for multimodal activity networks. Optimization is via dynamic programming, which proves to be demanding computationally. We suggest approximation schemes that do not detract signi…cantly from optimality, but are modest in their computational requirements.

Organizations need to respond quickly, efficiently and in an integrated way to the challenges emerging from daily routines. This paper focuses on presenting a solution for the implementation of project management initiatives in an Engineering and Construction company, which was at an embryonic stage of project management maturity. The company aimed at improving its project management maturity level, in order to increase the likelihood of success of its projects. Six project management improvement initiatives in which the company should focus its efforts were identified, considering its organizational context, through four research methods: survey, document analysis, observation and focus groups. Three dimensions were considered for the development of this proposal: People and Organizational Knowledge; Processes, Tools and Techniques and General Management System.

To solve a health and safety problem on a waste treatment facility, different multicriteria decis... more To solve a health and safety problem on a waste treatment facility, different multicriteria decision methods were used, including the PROV Exponential decision method. Four alternatives and ten attributes were considered. We found a congruent solution, validated by the different methods. The AHP and the PROV Exponential decision method led us to the same options ordering, but the last method reinforced one of the options as being the best performing one, and detached the least performing option. Also, the ELECTRE I method results led to the same ordering which allowed to point the best solution with reasonable confidence. This paper demonstrates the potential of using multicriteria decision methods to support decision making on complex problems such as risk control and accidents prevention

An optimal resource allocation approach to stochastic multimodal projects had been previously dev... more An optimal resource allocation approach to stochastic multimodal projects had been previously developed by applying a Dynamic Programming model [2] [3], which proved to be very demanding computationally. Approximations to the initial model had been also developed, still within DP framework [4]. Computing times were improved, but demonstrated the need for further developments. In this paper we report on the application of a recently developed technique for global optimization, the Electromagnetism Algorithm (EMA) [1], to this problem and demonstrate its superior performance to previously attempted approximations.
