Prof Dr Murat Yazici currently works at the Automotive Engineering Department, Bursa Uludag University. He is doing research and teaching as a full professor in Automotive Engineering. He is the head of the UMIMAG LAB. He established “Applied Mechanics and Advanced Materials Research Group (UMIMAG) and Laboratory” in 2013. UMIMAG Lab. has 15 full-time members and 12 part-time. He has successfully completed more than 25 projects supported by the EU, The Scientific And Technological Research Council Of Turkey (TUBITAK), and Industry. Material development and performance prediction of the Composite materials, Lightweight structures, nanomaterials under various loading and environmental conditions, and their applications and FEM modelling are the main research subjects of him and UMIMAG LAB.

Bu çalışmada iki boyutlu rasgele dağılı kısa cam elyafı takviyeli polyester matrisli kompozit pla... more Bu çalışmada iki boyutlu rasgele dağılı kısa cam elyafı takviyeli polyester matrisli kompozit plaklarda çekme hızının kompozit mukavemeti üzerine etkileri araştırılmıştır. Bir, iki ve üç tabakalı kompozitler üretilmiştir. Elde edilen test sonuçlarına göre çekme hızı arttıkça kompozit mukavemetinde düşme görülmektedir. Ayrıca, tabakalı kompozitin gerilme değerleri tabaka sayısı arttığında yükselse bile, bu tek tabakanın gerilme değerleri ile kıyaslandığında olması gereken değerin çok altındadır. Yazarların yayınladığı diğer çalışmaları ve devamı niteliğindeki bu çalışmadaki bulgular dikkate alındığında cam elyaf takviyeli polyester kompozitlerde 2D rasgele dağılı takviye durumunda, yükleme hızı ile kompozit mukavemetinin düştüğü ve bu düşüşte lif/matris arabiriminin önemli rol oynadığı anlaşılmaktadır. In the present study, an elastomeric nanocomposite was prepared by two roller mixing mill with th... more In the present study, an elastomeric nanocomposite was prepared by two roller mixing mill with the Natural Rubber (NR) and Nano Graphene Platelets (NGP). The Nylon 6.6 cord fabrics were laminated with the prepared NR/NGP nanocomposite layers. The NR/NGP composites and Nylon 6.6 cord fabric laminated nanocomposite plates were cured at 165 °C for 10 min under pressure. Nylon 6.6 fabric reinforced NR/NGP nanocomposites were electrically characterized under free and cyclic loading conditions. NGP addition to NR improved the electrical conductivity. Under cyclic loading produced nanocomposite and cord fabric layered plates showed periodical sensing behavior with same amplitude in each period.

They have been widely used in naval, aeronautical, aerospace, civil, industrial, and automotive engineering applications on account of their good acoustical attenuation, excellent strength to weight ratio, vibration isolation, dielectric properties. In this study, a novel high strain rate sensitive syntactic foam was developed. A rigid polyurethane resin was used as a binder material. Glass bubbles were used as an additive for producing cell structure. Elastomeric silicone rubber resin were used to change elastic properties of the foam as an additional binder material. Quasistatic compression properties and high strain rate compression properties were obtained by using Instron Universal Tensile-Compression Machine and Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar experimental setup respectively. The results show that developed foams are low dense and very high strain rate sensitive materials. Consequently, developed foam can be used for the blast, impact or ballistic mitigation purpose as a coating material.

The Taguchi method was used to determine the effects of the control factors (temperature, stirring speed, core-shell ratio and surfactant concentration) affecting MCs’ core diameter and core content and optimizing their optimum levels with a single criterion. Optimum control factor levels, which simultaneously provide maximum core diameter and core content of MCs, were determined by the PROMETHEE-GAIA multi-criteria optimization method. In addition, the optimized MC yield was analyzed by thermal camera images and compression test.Design/methodology/approachMicrocracks in materials used for aerospace vehicles and automotive parts cause serious problems, so research on self-healing in materials science becomes critical. The damages caused by micro-cracks need to heal themselves quickly. The study has three aims: (1) production of self-healing MCs, mechanical and chemical characterization of produced MCs, (2) single-criteria and multi-criteria optimization of parameters providing maximum MC core diameter and core content, (3) investigation of self-healing property of produced MCs and evaluation. Firstly, MCs were produced to achieve these goals.FindingsThe optimized micro cures are buried in the epoxy matrix at different concentrations. Thermal camera images after damage indicate the presence of healing. An epoxy-amine MC consisting of a 10% by weight filled aluminum sandwich panel was prepared and subjected to a quasi-static compression test. It was determined that there is a strong bond between the UF shell and the epoxy resin.Originality/valueThe optimization of production factors has been realized to produce the most efficient MCs that heal using less expensive and more accessible methods.

Körükler, uzun yıllardır ticari araçlarda ve otobüslerde, sürüş yüksekliğini korumak ve yükten bağımsız olarak araç konforunu artırmak için kullanılmaktadır. Hava yayları malzeme yapısı nedeniyle, çalışma sırasında tek yönlü gerilmelere maruz kalmazlar ve doğrusal olmayan davranış sergilerler. Kompozit yapı, farklı kalınlıktaki iç ve dış kauçuk arasında iki katman olarak zıt açılarda sarılan kord bezinden oluşur. Bu yüzden tek başına yüklemenin neden olduğu değişikliklerin ampirik olarak belirlenmesi zordur. Bu çalışmada hem deneysel hem de sonlu eleman yöntemleri ile havalı süspansiyon sisteminin bir parçası olan hava körüklerinin statik ve dinamik sönümleme özellikleri araştırılmıştır. Statik ve dinamik sönümleme özellikleri belirlenirken, farklı basınç ve deplasmanlardan dolayı körüklerde oluşan reaksiyon kuvvet değerleri kullanılmıştır. Sıkıştırma sonrası geri yaylanma esnasında deneysel ve analitik çalışmalardan elde edilen yay sabitlerinde farklılıklar gözlemlenmiştir. Minimum yüksekliğe ulaşıldıktan sonra geri hareket başladığı anda yay sabitinde yaklaşık %10'luk bir sapma gözlemlenmiş, sonrasında %6'dan daha az bir sapma değeri gözlemlenmiştir. Deneysel ve analitik çalışmalarda, anlık yükleme sonucunda elde edilen yay sabitleri arasındaki sapma değerleri %4'ün altında hava körüklerinde FEA analizinin etkin bir şekilde kullanılabileceği görülmüştür.

Electrical characterization of deformation behavior of carbon-based conductive filled nanocomposites under constant amplitude fatigue loading

Elastomer-based nanocomposites(EcNs) were prepared with a novel mixing method to determine the de... more Elastomer-based nanocomposites(EcNs) were prepared with a novel mixing method to determine the deformation properties under constant amplitude dynamic operating conditions. The fillers of EcNs consists of functionalized(M-FCNTs) and nonfunctionalized carbon-nanotubes(M-NCNTs), graphite(GF) and carbon black(CB). In this study, six different mixtures were prepared using M-FCNT, and M-NCNT fillers in 1, 2, 3 phr ratios, except for a CB-filled reference mixture(C00). Graphite, which has exfoliation and excellent lubricating properties1, was added to six mixtures at the rate of 1 phr to prevent agglomeration of M-CNTs in the mixtures. SEM images show that M-CNTs are homogeneously distributed, interacting strongly with GF, and M-FCNTs have a better interface interaction than M-NCNTs. During crosslinking of M-NCNT filled EcNs, due to the resistance in the direction of the polymer chain's movement, the difference between minimum torque and maximum torque increased by approximately 10% compared to M-FCNTs. The lost energy (ΔW) between the loading and unloading curves of M-NCNT filled EcNs increased compared to the M-FCNT filled mixtures and C00. The resistance properties depending on the samples' strain value showed a more stable and repetitive behavior in M-FCNT filled EcNs with a ratio of 1 and 2 phr, called F-C01 and F-C02, respectively. The semiconductor F-C01 sample showed the most stable behavior due to preserving the conductive filler network's structural order during the fatigue test, although the average resistance change was highest with 1.51E + 07 Ω. We discuss ways to use conductive elastomer composites as an effective deformation detection sensor in dynamic applications based on the results.

Graphene-filled rubber conductive nanocomposites developed within the scope of this study were obtained in two stages using mechanical mixers. The relationship between crack propagation and electrical resistance change was investigated using single-edge notched specimens in a tensile tester. Digital image correlation (DIC) technique was used to observe the crack resistance function depending on the local strain distribution. The results from the tests were evaluated to define the relationship between the crack length, the amount of conductive filler, and the change in electrical resistance. The sharp edges of the graphene nanoplatelets negatively affected the fracture resistance of the samples. In addition, it was observed that even at low strain values, gaps were formed in the areas close to the crack tip. The three-dimensional transmission network formed by graphene nanoplatelets dispersed in the matrix improved the electrical conductivity properties of the nanocomposites, so the relationship between crack propagation and electrical resistance change was determined.

The intercritically annealed steel exhibited a microstructure of equiaxed ferrite-martensite. Continuous yielding was observed at the stress-strain curves. New equation was developed to predict the empirical tensile strengths of DPS. Empirical results were compared with experimental data in this study and the literature. A difference changing between AE 10% was observed for experimental and empirical results.

Method is especially suitable for random type load signal, which is used for rubber mount validation tests. Method employs the cyclic tests until specimen failure and the Wöhler diagrams. Random type load signal is used for strain based level crossing operation and after that, life time prediction can be done by using the inputs from Wöhler diagrams and level crossing operations. Numerical approach and FEA approach only differ from each other in the determination of unit damages in making the life-time predictions.

The mechanisms by which different morphologies of preferentially foam filled corrugated panels de... more The mechanisms by which different morphologies of preferentially foam filled corrugated panels deform under planar blast loading, transmit shock, and absorb energy are investigated experimentally and numerically for the purpose of mitigating back-face deflection (BFD). Six foam filling configurations were fabricated and subjected to shock wave loading generated by a shock tube. Shock tube experimental results obtained from high-speed photography were used to validate the numerical models. The validated numerical model was further used to analyze 24 different core configurations. The experimental and numerical results show that soft/hard arrangements (front to back) are the most effective for blast resistivity as determined by the smallest BFDs. The number of foam filled layers in each specimen affected the amount of front-face deflections (FFDs), but did relatively little to alter BFDs, and results do not support alternating foam filling layers as a valid method to attenuate shock impact.

Shock tube experiments were performed to investigate the blast response of corrugated steel cellu... more Shock tube experiments were performed to investigate the blast response of corrugated steel cellular core sandwich panels filled with a silicone based syntactic foam at room and high temperatures. The syntactic foam filler was prepared by mixing a two-part silicone mixture with glass microspheres; its microstructure, and mechanical properties were also characterized. The syntactic foam-filled sandwich panels were loaded via air shock pressure by using the shock tube with a fixture capable of testing materials at temperatures up to 900℃. High-speed photo-optical methods, digital image correlation techniques, were used in tandem with optical band-pass filters and high intensity light sources for providing sufficient contrast at elevated temperatures. Back-face deformation images were captured using two synchronized high-speed cameras while a third camera captured the side view deformation images. The shock pressure profiles and digital image correlation analysis were used to obtain the impulse imparted to the specimen, transient deflection, in-plane strain and out-of-plane velocity of the back-face sheet. It was observed that using the syntactic foam as a filler material decreased the front face and back face deflections by 42% and 27%, respectively, as compared to the empty sandwich panel. At high temperatures, the silicone-based syntactic foam decomposes into silica, a stable and non-hazardous byproduct. The highest impulse was imparted to the specimen at room temperature and subsequently lower impulses with increasing temperatures were observed. Due to the increased ductility of steel at high temperatures, the specimens demonstrated an increase in back face deflection, in-plane strain and out-of-plane velocity with increased temperatures, with weld failure being the primary form of core damage.
