Most of the papers published in journals or in the media highlight the devastating results of the pandemic on society. We consider that some aspects can still be identified as lessons having positive effects on the future development of human society. Thus, the global mobilization of the scientific community for the creation of a vaccine against the virus, the free access to scientific works, the creation of common databases shows how humanity can act as one in critical situations. Reducing the dependence of markets on a single supplier, which can influence prices and delivery times, has been brought back to the attention of the European and North American economies. The crisis of essential medical supplies, whose delivery from Asian suppliers has been delayed or cancelled, followed by the semiconductor crisis, are lessons that Western economies must not forget. Investments in the health system were necessary, and probably would not have had the same scope in the absence of the pandemic. Understanding the connection between humans, animals and the environment is particularly important in the context of the future epidemiological challenges that are likely to follow. The human species can only survive on the planet in harmony with the flora, fauna and environment in general. Responsible use of technological progress, reduction of pollution and of the negative impact on the environment, increased attention to nature are aspects highlighted by the pandemic. Reconsidering human relationships, increased care given to health and personal hygiene, working at home and greater attention to family and oneself can be considered gains of humanity following the pandemic.

The withdrawn batches pose certain risks to consumers, and food safety emphasizes prevention. The paper proposes an analysis of food recalls in Romania, based on official communications from relevant public institutions. From 2016 to 2023, the National Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Authority in Romania reported 337 food recalls, with the majority initiated by FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods) traders. Batches of fruits and vegetables, followed by ices and desserts, cereals and bakery products, as well as meat and meat products, were frequently removed from the market, primarily due to suspected presence of allergens, chemical contaminants, or microbiological issues. In terms of origin, the withdrawn batches were predominantly imported from Turkey, China, or Latin America. The research provides relevant information about the food withdrawals and recalls policy in Romania and will enable the development of a broader study regarding the capacity of companies operating in the domestic market to handle critical food safety incidents.

The demand for beef and veal at European and global market level can represent a significant opportunity to increase domestic producers’ business. Though cattle breeding is a traditional activity for the indigenous population from rural areas, livestock for slaughter have decreased steadily in the last years, thus the domestic market being dependent on imports. Romanian natural potential allows the achievement of sufficient production to meet domestic and export demand for beef, which brings high income for producers. The article proposes a review of the domestic production of beef and veal, their consumption and the origin of products on the domestic market in the European and international context.

The European integration process has fostered the continuous advancement of economic relations wi... more The European integration process has fostered the continuous advancement of economic relations with the EU, necessitating the modernization of domestic legislation through alignment with EU regulations, particularly in the realm of competition within the agro-food sector. The liberalization of competition is a positive catalyst for product diversification, consumer welfare, economic growth, and overall quality of life. The paper aims to assess the level of harmonization between national regulations governing the agrifood market and European regulations. The research entails the analysis of local legislation in the food sector, relevant scholarly works, and reports from the Competition Office. The findings indicate that the food industry and retail food trade are economic activities that require the elimination of anti-competitive barriers and the promotion of free competition. Furthermore, the provision of state aid to public companies must adhere to competition rules and avoid detrimental effects on the functioning of the market's supply and demand mechanism. In addition, the study aims to provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with the harmonization process. By examining the effectiveness of existing regulatory frameworks and identifying areas for improvement, this research contributes to the ongoing discussions on promoting fair competition and enhancing market efficiency in the agri-food sector. The findings of this study will inform policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers, enabling them to make informed decisions and develop strategies that foster a competitive and sustainable agri-food market in line with European standards. It is important to note that this research represents a preliminary analysis of competition in the agro-food chain, with further exploration planned as part of the doctoral training program.

Two set of experiments were performed on the effect of thermal treatment in the temperature range of 60-85°C on the susceptibility of whey protein concentrate to enzymatic hydrolysis by Proteinase K at 37°C and pH 7.5 and 8.0. Heat treatment in a certain time-temperature combination results in a significant increase in degree of hydrolysis, as monitored by OPA-NAC technique. The time-dependent changes in the degree of hydrolysis were described by a fractional conversion model, which enables calculations of activation energy. Whey proteins concentrate seems to be heat-sensitive for enzymatic hydrolysis, confirming that during heat treatment at neutral/alkaline pH the substrate is changing, since the dimmer dissociates with the exposure of hydrophobic residues.

The involvement of Romanian SMEs in public procurement represents more than 60% of the total concluded contracts during the period 2018-2020. The originality and novelty of the research derives from the analysis carried out on the SMEs attendance to public procurement in Romania and from highlighting the main causes for bids rejection. Public procurement can be an incentive tool for the development of innovative products/technologies and to support SMEs. The development of public sector contracts is one of the growing opportunities for these companies. Research has shown that the chance of SMEs being awarded public contracts decreases by around 15% due to lack of skills required by the tendering procedure or lack of staff training.

The paper proposes an analysis of the national research system, highlighting the factors that lead to a reduced success rate of Romanian research. Information on system development has been collected from national and international statistical bases. The data were processed, statistically interpreted and represented graphically. The assessment of the degree of market concentration of the innovative companies in Romania was achieved through the Gini Struck and Herfindahl-Hirschman methods. The results of the study have led to a high concentration of the market. The development of private research is at an early stage in Romania, compared to Europe. Although strategic tools to promote research results have been proposed at national level, the low allocation of funds to the sector, a domestic fund dominated by foreign capital and inadequate legislation still lead to a lack of attractiveness of the sector and modest results.

The objective of this study was to customize a technological design for appropriate valorization of blueberry pomace into a shelf‐life–stable, dark purple multifunctional ingredient, containing lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus casei), by freeze‐drying. The main anthocyanins in blueberries freeze‐dried inoculated pomace are malvidin 3‐O‐glucoside, peonidin 3‐O‐glucoside, and cyanidin 3‐O‐glucoside. A viable cells content of 4.75×108 CFU/g DW was found after freeze‐drying and the ability of the freeze‐dried powder to inhibit the DPPH radical was 171.98 ± 1.73 mMol Trolox/g DW. The results obtained from CIElab analysis show a tendency to red and blue, characteristic of blueberry anthocyanins. The bioaccesibility of anthocyanins from blueberry powder was 37.8% and the probiotic survival rate after passing through the digestion process was 49.56%. The inhibitory potential of the obtained powder on α‐amylase, pancreatic lipase, and α‐glucosidase and tyrosinase was assessed. A significant antidiabetic potential of the powder was found, with IC50 values for α‐amylase of 2.61 ± 0.24 mg/ml and for α‐glucosidase of 1.37 ± 0.01 mg/ml, significantly lower when compared to corresponding drugs used in current practices. The powder also showed a significant potential to inhibit tyrosinase, supporting the hypothesis that the pomace resulting from juice and wine manufacturing may be successfully used to develop multifunctional ingredients with significant health benefits.Practical ApplicationNowadays, food scientists and industry are seeking technological alternatives to obtain functional ingredients, due to the global interest in translating and applying scientific knowledge to address consumers’ health issues. In our study, a freeze‐drying customized design involving the use of the blueberry pomace, pectin, and Lactobacillus casei was applied to develop an ingredient with multiple functions. Besides a remarkable color, the powder showed good antioxidant activity, in vitro cells viability, and inhibitory activity against some metabolic syndrome–associated enzymes.
