Apart from traditional reference works (dictionaries, encyclopedias, atlases etc.), auxiliary texts (parallel texts, background texts, previous translations of the same or similar texts) may be of great help to find out about text-type conventions, domain-related vocabulary (including phraseology, collocations and terminology), or solutions of translation problems. Most modern editions of the Old and New Testament divide the chapters of the Biblical books into ... more Most modern editions of the Old and New Testament divide the chapters of the Biblical books into small sections (pericopes), providing them with headings. These section headings were introduced by editors and translators in order to structure the chapters and indicate the contents of the passage, facilitate reading or help readers find their way through the text. Section headings are paratexts which address the audience from a meta-level, guiding the readers’ reception and shaping the sender-receiver relationship. The paper analyses a corpus of 1255 section headings collected from the Gospel of St. Matthew in seven German and two English translations with regard to their form and the role they play in the interpretation of the corresponding co-texts.

Taking a prospective approach to translation, translators choose their translation strategies acc... more Taking a prospective approach to translation, translators choose their translation strategies according to the purpose or function the translated text is intended to fulfil for the target audience. Since communicative purposes need certain conditions in order to work, it is the translator's task to analyse the conditions of the target culture and to decide whether, and how, the source-text purposes can work for the target audience according to the specifications of the translation brief. If the target-culture conditions differ from those of the source culture, there are usually two basic options: either to transform the text in such a way that it can work under target-culture conditions (= instrumental translation), or to replace the source-text functions by their respective meta-functions (= documentary translation).

Les formes d’adresse sont les marqueurs de la fonction phatique comme on peut le voir dans le cad... more Les formes d’adresse sont les marqueurs de la fonction phatique comme on peut le voir dans le cadre des salutations ou des bavardages. Il convient ainsi de supposer que les orateurs utilisent des styles conventionnels particuliers afin de rendre leur discours plus naturel ou acceptable auprès de leur public. Si ces styles sont spécifiques à une culture particulière, les traducteurs devront décider s’ils vont les « apprivoiser » pour les rendre conformes aux normes de la culture d’arrivée ou s’ils vont les reproduire tels qu’ils sont dans le texte de départ avec les traits de « l’exotisme ». Après avoir défini et classé les fomes et les fonctions d’adresse en général, cet article tend à explorer les différences concernant la forme, la fréquence et la distribution des comportements d’adresse dans les oeuvres de fiction contemporaines espagnoles, anglaises et allemandes ainsi que dans ses traductions.
