Some activities related to the maintenance of power distribution networks can be performed withou... more Some activities related to the maintenance of power distribution networks can be performed without interrupting the flow of energy on the line. This kind of activity is referred to as "live line maintenance" and imply some risks which have to be taken into account, especially those related to human lives. Therefore, training becomes an important tool, as well as mechanisms for improving knowledge acquisition and retention and for providing information with better quality, so as to enhance the quality of the learning process. This paper discusses the development of a semi-immersive VR system for training of live-line maintenance activities. Aspects of the developed software, its characteristics and functional model, in addition to the Volume 4-N o 2-interactive interactive devices adopted and technical choices are presented. Using Game Engines In Lightning Shielding: The Application Of The Rolling Spheres Method On Virtual As-Built Power Substations

Lightning strikes can cause severe negative impacts to the electrical sector causing direct damag... more Lightning strikes can cause severe negative impacts to the electrical sector causing direct damage to equipment as well as shutdowns, especially when occurring in power substations. In order to mitigate this problem, a meticulous planning of the power substation protection system is of vital importance. A critical part of this is the distribution of shielding wires through the substation, which creates a 3D imaginary protection mesh similar to a circus tarpaulin. Equipment enclosed in the volume defined by that 3D mesh is considered protected against lightning strikes. The use of traditional methods of longitudinal cutting analysis based on 2D CAD tools makes the process laborious and the results obtained may not guarantee satisfactory protection of electrical equipment. Em sistemas virtuais de treinamento os mecanismos de rastreamento das interações dos usuários geram um conjunto de dados a partir dos quaisé possível avaliar a execução das tarefas instrucionais e inferir o estado de conhecimento do aprendiz. A representação das tarefas como grafos permite o mapeamento da sua ordem de execução e comparação com a uma sequência esperada. Este trabalho tem como objetivo analisar os métodos de agrupamentos destes grafos a partir de dados de interação em um sistema virtual de treinamento profissional para atividades de linha viva em subestações elétricas. Foram realizados estudos com diferentes definições de similaridade de grafos. Ao final são apontadas aquelas com as quais se obtiveram os melhores agrupamentos com destaque para aquelas derivadas das distâncias matriciais.

This work presents a methodology for the automatic detection of flaws in polymer insulators using... more This work presents a methodology for the automatic detection of flaws in polymer insulators using three-dimensional industrial computed tomography (CT), as well as results obtained in the context of power distribution networks. The CT slices were reconstructed using 180 digital radiographs (projections) acquired by a high resolution system (pixel dimension of 50 μm × 50 μm, a-Si). For the reconstruction of 3D CT, 50 μm wide bitmap slices were used. The Marching Cubes algorithm was used to perform the 3D reconstruction, using the Visualization Toolkit (VTK) library and the Java programming language (64 Bits Linux platform). Nine features were obtained from the reconstructed three-dimensional objects for the neural networks training. Results showed to be satisfactory.

This method differs from the conventional classification in the sense that the clustering algorithm is applied to a set of regions, obtained from the segmented image. The statistical parameters of these regions are used to classify each. After the previous step, some regions are selects to be training areas on a supervised classification step. A comparison is made between the pixel per pixel classification and the region classification.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows for the identification of regions of the huma... more Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) allows for the identification of regions of the human brain associated with certain sensory, motor or cognitive tasks. Integrated visualization of functional information and anatomical structures of the human brain is an important field in volumetric visualization applied to Medicine. This work presents a simplified, scalable and flexible platform for investigating visualization techniques of brain activation regions, detected in functional magnetic resonance images. The tool addresses the main phases of this process, namely, the reading of functional images, the generation of activation maps and the integrated visualization of activation maps and anatomical data, using direct volume rendering.

Rarely such a feat is accomplished casually; the iteration of the prototyping and testing stages in the development of a game generates the core around which every aspect of the game design stage will revolve. The concepts regarding the feeling of fun and immersion may help the development of new and captivating experiences in games. In this paper some of the current theories will be explored, focusing on the theories of Flow, the Magic Circle and the PENS theory among others which address player motivation and the creation of compelling games.

The main concept of the virtual environment is the mapping between virtual reality technology and gamification methods with learning theories, in particular, Gagné’s cognitive model. In order to explore the benefits of gamification, the system uses concepts established by the Flow Theory, the Magic Circle concept as well as the Player Experience of Need Satisfaction (PENS) theory. User Experience (UX) is used to assess how the system is perceived by the user. Non-player characters are modelled to assist the trainee in the learning process. Live-line maintenance of power distribution networks is performed in order to avoid the interrupt... more Live-line maintenance of power distribution networks is performed in order to avoid the interruption of energy supply. A Virtual Reality (VR) application can assist in the training of high-risk activities providing many benefits over other approaches. For example, simulations can be repeated as many times as necessary and for a greater number of trainees without risk and with less cost. This paper presents the development of a novel system based on semi-immersive VR applied to training activities on live-lines. In addition to hardware components that define the whole platform, aspects of design, architecture and software development, which establish the basis for the proposal of a comprehensive platform, are thoroughly discussed.

Este trabalho descreve uma metodologia aplicada para ponderação de critérios de otimização que co... more Este trabalho descreve uma metodologia aplicada para ponderação de critérios de otimização que compõem um Fluxo de Potência Ótimo Dinâmico (FPOD) que determina despacho hidrotérmico mensal discretizado por patamares de carga. Esse FPOD é utilizado em formulação que determina despacho hidrotérmico de médio prazo não linear, com modelagem estocástica e que adota representação detalhada de todas as usinas hidroelétricas e termoelétricas e inclui restrições elétricas do sistema interligado brasileiro. Os critérios de otimização considerados no FPOD são os seguintes: minimização do custo de geração das usinas térmicas, do custo de déficit, das perdas elétricas, minimização de fluxo de potência nas linhas de intercâmbio e do desvio de potência térmica em relação ao fornecido pelo problema energético.
