The Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic (KJOC) score is a reference tool for this purpose. We aimed to cross-culturally adapt and investigate its measurement properties in Spanish overhead athletes. Design: Cross-cultural adaptation followed the steps of direct translation, back translation, comprehensibility analysis, and review by the Committee of Experts. Then, symptomatic and asymptomatic overhead athletes were invited to complete an electronic version of the Spanish adaptation (KJOC-Sp). The structural validity was evaluated through an exploratory factor analysis with principal axis factoring. Hypotheses were tested for known-groups and convergent validity, studying the correlation with the Shoulder Pain and Disability Index and the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder, and Hand Sports Module questionnaires in symptomatic athletes. Cronbach alpha ...

Methods A cross-sectional study of 46 women 3 months after first delivery was conducted. B-mode ultrasound imaging of the interrectus distance (IRD) and linea alba distortion was performed 2 cm below (I-point) and above (S-point) the umbilicus and at the mid-point between the umbilicus and xiphoid process (X-point). Images were recorded at rest and during an AHE performed in a supine position, a semi curl-up (SCU), an abdominal drawing-in maneuver (ADIM), and a SCU performed after an initial ADIM (ADIM+SCU). Results The SCU exercise narrowed the IRD at the X- and S-points. Compared with SCU, AHE and ADIM widened the IRD at the S- and X-points. No significant differences were found when comparing the IRD at rest, during AHE and durin...

Caring Efficacy scale was developed with the purpose of measuring nurses' perceived self-efficacy in orienting and maintaining caring relationships with patients. Since any instruments measuring caring self-efficacy have not been developed in Italy, the study aimed at culturally adapting and validating Caring Efficacy scale in a sample of Italian nurses. A total of 300 registered nurses were asked to fill a selfreported questionnaire; translation-back-translation procedure was carried out to maintain semantic, idiomatic and conceptual equivalence of the original scale. Then, factor analysis was performed in order to test appropriateness of the factor structure. Convergent and discriminant validity was also tested. A two-factor structure with 17 items was found. Results show that Cronbach's Alpha value was 0.84 for Confidence to Care, and 0.75 for Doubts and Concerns. Correlation analysis for convergent and discriminant validity showed that Confidence to Care was positively correlated with sense of coherence and no significant correlation with Doubts and Concerns was found. Caring efficacy scale can be used by nurse managers as a way of assessing nurses' self-efficacy and their caring orientation, thus improving quality of patient care.

BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and improvements in the treatment of breast cancer have achieved surv... more BACKGROUND: Early diagnosis and improvements in the treatment of breast cancer have achieved survival rates between 78 and 88% at 5 years with a tendency to increase in coming years. Despite these improvements, the treatment of breast cancer morbidity remains. The lack of shoulder mobility, the edema and the axillary web syndrome are among the early complications. The axillary web syndrome is a frequently overlooked cause of significant morbidity in the early post-operative period after breast cancer axillary surgery. Although its emergence is the first sign of the lymphatic system damage, under diagnosis and misdiagnosis have meant that, to date, no study has shown that the axillary web syndrome is related to the onset of lymphedema. Among the late complications, lymphedema and chronic pain remain a potential problem for women with breast cancer that, at least in the case of lymphedema, need preventive measures to minimize their disease. The lymphedema is the most significant chronic complication after axillary lymph-node dissection. The lymphedema can cause cosmetic disfigurement, physical discomfort, and functional impairment. Anxiety, depression, and emotional distress are more common in patients with lymphedema. Lymphedema affects social relationships and undermines body image and self-esteem. Consequently, most authors agree that the prevention of lymphedema is essential. Once it becomes a chronic problem that must be cared for life, since there is no cure, so that any other measure that could contribute to reduce its impact would be very useful. Despite that physical therapy has proved to be the only effective therapy in the treatment viii of lymphedema, in terms of prevention, no clinical trials specifically designed to prevent it was found and only preventive measures based on avoid risk factors are recommended. Based on the fact that a high percentage of patients with breast cancer are at risk of developing a secondary upper limb lymphedema, the use of adopted and reputed physical therapy techniques (manual lymph-drainage, progressive massage of the scar, progressive active and action-assisted shoulder exercises and propioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) in the treatment of the effects and complications of breast cancer surgery along with an individualized education could be effective in preventing secondary lymphedema. Furthermore, in regard with other complications mentioned above, has also included its incidence since there are not enough clinical data after surgical treatment including axillary lymphnode dissection in breast cancer demonstrating its incidence and its possible relationship to the onset of lymphedema. METHODS: Randomized, controlled, and single-blinded clinical trial was carried out to detect the effectiveness of the early application of physical therapy in the prevention of secondary lymphedema. Príncipe de Asturias Hospital's Human Research Ethics Committee in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid (Spain) approved the study. One hundred and twenty women treated with breast surgery, including axillary lymphnode dissection at this hospital between May 2005 and June 2007 were randomly assigned to either the early physical therapy group (60 patients) or to the control group (60 patients). Programmed assessments were made pre-and postoperatively on hospital discharge (between Day 3 & Day 5

Improving the proprioception of PFMs, defined as the capacity to know the status and position of each body part, and adequately contracting them could be a protective factor to prevent the appearance of PFDs in the general female population. This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of educational interventions and verbal instructions on how to contract and exercise the PFMs to improve the proprioception of the PFMs in women. A systematic search of studies published in the last 20 years until March 2022 was conducted in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Scopus, PEDro, Lilacs, and Dialnet databases. A meta-analysis could not be performed due to the heterogeneity in the types of studies and included populations. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines for the design, search, and repor...

The original procedure, described in 1932 by Vodder, is still used by some physical therapists. However, many updates to the technical knowledge are necessary based both on existing data and scientific validation. In this sense, this article should be seen as a revision of the manual procedure raising a debate about the need to massage the lymph nodes at a distance from the oedema, with required sepecific breathing, massage the area of the cranial prior to draning the swelling and the implementation of manual drainage oedema.

A randomized clinical trial was carried out. Volunteers, ≥18 years old, with a latent MTrP in the medial gastrocnemius muscle were included. Subjects with contraindications to DN, active MTrPs, and/or other treatments in MTrPs in the 3 months prior to recruitment were excluded. A total of 69 participants were randomly allocated to four groups, where post-DN intervention consisted of an eccentric, concentric, or isometric exercise, or no exercise, and they were assessed for PNS intensity (visual analog scale (pVAS)), pressure pain threshold (PPT, analog algometer), pain intensity (nVAS), and local twitch responses (LTRs) during DN, as well as demographics and anthropometrics. The mixed-model analyses of variance showed significant interaction...

Web pages were retrieved entering the terms “dyspareunia”, “vaginismus”, and “vulvodynia” in Google, Yahoo!, and Bing search engines. Two researchers employed the DISCERN and Bermúdez-Tamayo questionnaires to analyze the content and quality of the websites, and the INFLESZ scale to evaluate their readability. IBM SPSS® version 25 statistical software was employed for data analysis. The internet search yielded 262 websites, 91 of which were included after applying the selection criteria. Websites with information on dyspareunia obtained median scores of 24 (30–21) in the DISCERN, 38 (41.0–35.5) in the Bermúdez-Tamayo, and 55.3 (57.2–50.9) in the INFLESZ tools. The results for websites on vaginismus revealed median scores of 23.5 (30–20) in the DISCERN, 37 (42–35) in the Bermúdez-Tamayo, and 52.9 (55.6–46.4) in the ...

A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach used three data collection techniques (in-depth interviews, discussion groups, and online forums). Thirty-six women in the first six months postpartum participated in the study, from physiotherapy centers with maternal child specialties in several locations in Spain. Women with different types of delivery, presence or absence of perineal trauma during delivery, previous deliveries, and different types of breastfeeding were included. Among the strategies, closeness support and understanding were the ones that women used to adjust to the new situation, in order to improve the couple’s relationship, intimacy, and cope with the significant changes that appear in the first six months postpartum. Changes and adaptations in sexual practices become a tool for coping with a new sexuality, especially if...
