Pakistan ranks third among consumers and fourth among producers of the cotton worldwide. There is immense need to increase cotton yield and contribution through various breeding practices to fulfill the demand of national and international market. Improvement in fibre yield and quality is much important to meet the demands and supplies of cotton fibre. Present review will help the reader to understand the gene action in terms of general combining ability and specific combining ability of the genotypes for the development of high yielding cotton varieties and hybrids. The advantages of direct-seeded rice have been proved by many research workers but yet, it is not very much adapted by farmers. Weeds reduce cost effectiveness of direct-seeded rice. Keeping this in view a study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different row spacing and weed management practices on the performance of aerobic rice at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, during summer season of 2013. Fine rice variety 'Super Basmati' was medium of the trial. Experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with factorial arrangements having three replications. Seed was sown by hand drill at different row spacing comprising 15 cm, 22.5 cm, and 30 cm. Weedy check, hand pulling, hoeing and pre-emergence herbicide as Pendimethalin followed by post-emergence herbicide bis-pyribac sodium were the weed management practices. Weeds data and rice yield contributing parameters were measured by following standard procedures. Maximum reduction in weed density (86%) and weed dry weight (79%) was recorded in Pendimethalin as a pre-emergence followed by bis-pyribac sodium as a post-emergence herbicide in rice crop sown at 15 cm row spacing. Yield contributing parameters like number of productive tillers, kernels per panicle, and 1000kernel weight were analyzed, the weed free treatment was found to be superior with an average paddy yield of 4.46 t ha -1 .
