Am... more Human beings and wild organisms are exposed daily to a broad range of environmental stressors. Among them are the persistent organic pollutants that can trigger adverse effects on these organisms due to their toxicity properties. There is evidence that metabolomics can be used to identify biomarkers of effect by altering the profiles of endogenous metabolites in biological fluids or tissues. This approach is relatively new and has been used in vitro studies mainly. Therefore, this review addresses those that have used metabolomics as a key tool to identify metabolites associated with environmental exposure to POPs in wildlife and human populations and that can be used as biomarkers of effect. The published results suggest that the metabolic pathways that produce energy, fatty acids, and amino acids are commonly affected by POPs. Furthermore, these pathways can be promoters of additional effects. In the future, metabolomics combined with other omics will improve understanding of the ...

Castor bean (Ricinus communis) can be a high-demand crop for the production of biodiesel, an alternative biofuel similar to conventional diesel. The objective of the work has been to optimize the method of obtaining biodiesel from a “green technology” process, directly splitting the seeds of three macerated castor varieties, without prior extraction of the oil with n-hexane as is traditional. Also using low-cost heterogeneous basic catalysts, friendly to the environment. It has been shown that it is feasible to obtain biodiesel as an eco-fuel from castor beans directly, without prior oil extraction with the consequent saving of n-hexane solvent and the non-use of sodium hydroxide. It is feasible to substitute methanol for ethanol (less toxic and cheaper), and as a novel aspect, the use of BaCO3 as a heterogeneous catalyst, not reported in any reference of those consulted. Yield percentages ranging between 31% and 45% were obtained, comparable to those obtained from previous oil extractions. It was concluded that of the three varieties of castor bean evaluated, the variety HG-A-1 (collected in Atotonilco el Grande, Municipality of the State of Hidalgo) classified as IBEA type, is the one that presents the best results. Keywords: Barium carbonate, Castor oil, Eco-fuel, Ethanol, Seed.

The angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) participates in the modulation of blood pressure and is the principal receptor of the virus SARS-CoV-2. The inhibitors of the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and the block receptors of angiotensin II regulate the expression of ACE2; thus, they could be useful in the treatment of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. The inferior peptides from 1 to 3 kDa and the hydrophobic amino acids are the best candidates to inhibit ACE, and these compounds are present in rice, corn, wheat, oats, sorghum, and barley. In addition, the vitamins C and E, phenolic acids, and flavonoids present in cereals show a reduction in the oxidative stress involved in the pathogenesis of hypertension. The influence of ACE on hypertension and COVID-19 has turned into a primary point of control and treatment from the nutritional perspective. The objective of thi...

In the first stage, the studied material was characterized by AAS, SEM-EDS, and XRD. The results revealed significantly high amounts of copper (744.42 mg/g), compared with the rest of the metals present in the sample, mainly iron and zinc. In the second stage of the work, alkali dynamic leaching experiments were carried out in the S2O3−2− O2 medium, evaluating important kinetic variables in order to verify the controlling step of the system and adjust the data to a kinetic model. According to the results obtained from the various experimental tests executed, it was found that in the studied system of S2O3−2− O2, the leaching of copper was preferably adjusted to the model of spherical particles with a shrinking core finding a mixed chemical–diffusive control, with values of Ea = 25.78 kJ/mol and...

The ability to retrieve and combine them with mining waste (tailings) in the reprocessing of new rock aggregates implies a high economic effect and a new source of employment. The aim of this work has been to present a technical-economic feasibility study for this purpose. The results indicate that a plant design capacity of 61T/h would have an initial investment of $24 543 377.73 Mexican pesos (about $1 817 828.00 U.S. dollars) with annual revenues of $1 500 000.00 minimum and a maximum recovery in 16 years. Retrieving and marketing materials that often accompany CDW, annual earnings can be as high as $12 500 000.00 and an accelerated recovery in 2 years.

It is, therefore, essential to study treatments for water polluted with E2 that would guarantee its complete elimination and mineralization. Denitrification is a biological process shown to have the capacity to completely biodegrade drugs, such as ampicillin. This work is aimed to evaluate the biotransformation of 17β-estradiol by employing a denitrifying sludge. The assays performed were: (I) abiotic with 3.5 mg E2-C L−1 and (II) denitrifying with 10 mg CH3COO−-C L−1 as the reference, 10 mg E2-C L−1 as the sole electron donor, and a mixture of (mg L−1) 10 E2-C with 10 CH3COO−-C at C N−1 of 1.1. The E2-C and NO3−-N consumption efficiencies were greater than 99%, and HCO3−-C and N2 production yields were close to 1 in all assays. The denitrifying sludge could biodegrade up to 10 mg E2-C L−1 as the sole electron donor and w...

From the surface of healthy mangoes, different bacteria were isolated. For all isolated bacterial strains, we determined their antimicrobial activity against a fungal strain that caused anthracnose in mangoes and against Alternaria alternata, both in the culture medium and directly on mangoes. The bacterial strains with the highest antifungal activity were identified by sequencing the 16s rRNA gene. Two species of Serratia were identified: marcescens and nematodiphila. Finally, the chitinolytic, glucanolytic, and cellulolytic activity and prodigiosin production of bacteria with antifungal activity was determined. Five fungal strains were isolated from mangoes with anthracnose. Only one strain was responsible for anthracnose in mangoes. This fungal strain was identified as Colletotrichum siamense. Against C. siamense and A. alternata in vitro and in mango selected strains of Serratia showed antifungal activit...

Through a literature review, the problems that arise with soil salinization in arid and semiarid ... more Through a literature review, the problems that arise with soil salinization in arid and semiarid areas mainly and especially the case of Mexico were analyzed. The origin is assessed, the principles for the recovery of salinized soil, biremediación and current technologies. Also, some future projections for these processes are shown. Finally, it is concluded that the issue of soil bioremediation, is relatively recent and several of the technologies applied are still in test mode since its effectiveness in many cases has to do with the soil and climatic conditions of the region where used. Technologies can be varied, as used it refers to the application of washes the floor and the supply of gypsum as amended. Something a little more recent but equally longer used is the application of compost as a means to reclaim saline soil. Most remediation technologies and companies dedicated to providing these services are dedicated almost exclusively to treat soils that have been contaminated by...
