Marvel's new Thor assembles his own team of Avengers for the first time in forty-three years. The God of Thunder is Asgard's primary guardian and a protector for the vast expanse of the Ten Realms. Thor's dual responsibility forces him to balance his responsibility as a member of the Avengers on Earth with his royal obligations to his kingdom, but he isn't always there to fulfill his duties.
The golden halls of Asgard house a wide array of formidable warriors. Lady Sif and the Warriors Three provide both muscle and steadfast loyalty in Asgard. Meanwhile, Angela brings the fierce discipline of Heven to the other Nine Realms, while the Valkyrior guide the souls of the fallen to their final rest. Whenever Thor isn't available, these heroes are willing to take his place.
Although he isn't Asgardian, Beta Ray Bill is perhaps one of the most powerful and loyal people Thor has ever met, which makes him the perfect candidate to be Thor's replacement in a Marvel crossover and as the leader of his own team of cosmic heroes.
Beta Ray Bill Assembles The Defenders Of Light And Dark To Fight The Queen In Black
Queen in Black: Defenders of Light and Dark #1; Written by Tom Waltz; Art by Zé Carlos
This year, Marvel's Queen in Black event reaches its climax in July with several titles, including Queen in Black: Venom Unchained, Queen in Black: Hela, and Queen in Black: Defenders of Light and Dark. The latter comic centers on a new team of Marvel superheroes, the titular Defenders, who join forces to oppose the corrupted Hela. The Defenders of Light and Dark are composed of Bill, Monica Rambeau, Agent Anti-Venom, Iron Man, Sunfire, and Cloak and Dagger, all of whom seem initially divided into two factions.
As the Queen in Black: Defenders of Light and Dark solicitation says, Beta Ray Bill is the only non-Asgardian hero who remembers villains like Hela following the events of The Immortal Thor. Now, it seems like Bill is doing his God of Thunder role justice by bringing together a group of heroes to fight the Queen in Black. Meanwhile, Iron Man is set to test his Black Metal armor with the help of his own group of allies in the same battle.
Beta Ray Bill's Leader Role Was Long Overdue
Beta Ray Bill Has Never Led His Own Superhero Team
Beta Ray Bill's appointment as the commander of the Defenders of Light and Dark is a promotion that has finally been earned over years of selfless service. Though Bill has often been a loyal ally to Asgard and the Odinson, he has never been the main star of a cosmic event. In Queen in Black: Defenders of Light and Dark #1, Beta Ray Bill is set to transcend the label of successor and test his skills at guiding other heroes through a potentially apocalyptic event, just like Thor has achieved on countless other occasions.
Beta Ray Bill’s ability to lead an uneven, overpowered team of superheroes demonstrates a diplomatic maturity that even the most seasoned Avengers sometimes lack. While Iron Man provides his technological prowess, Bill provides the spiritual and tactical glue that prevents the disparate powerhouses from fracturing under Hela's corrosive influence. Bill is often relegated to the role of muscle. The Defenders of Light and Dark initiative promises to rectify this by placing him at the center of a conflict where his specific knowledge of Asgardian lore might be key.
Beta Ray Bill has been a member of various elite groups beyond his home planet. Bill has been part of the Thor Corps, a collective of hammer-wielders across time and space; Marvel's cosmic Annihilators, a team of heavy hitters designed to prevent galactic collapse; and the Star Masters, a team of galactic peacekeepers. Bill's resume also includes time with the Secret Defenders, the Omega Flight team in Canada, and naturally, with the Avengers as well.
How do you think the Defenders of Light and Dark will fare against the Queen in Black?
