On the Limitations of Private Ironism and Public Liberalism: Based on the Criticism of Richard Rorty

This paper critically examines Richard Rorty’s Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity, focusing on th... more This paper critically examines Richard Rorty’s Contingency, Irony, and Solidarity, focusing on the conceptual tensions within his vision of a liberal society grounded in private irony and public solidarity. While Rorty proposes that individuals should adopt an ironic stance in their private lives while embracing liberal principles in public, this duality reveals inconsistencies that undermine his overall argument. First, Rorty's dismissal of rationality and science in favor of a poeticized society neglects their instrumental role in understanding and engaging with the world beyond language. Second, his valorization of poetic language overlooks the structural inequalities in linguistic access, which in turn hampers the inclusive solidarity he envisions. Lastly, his preference for public liberalism over private irony betrays the transformative potential of ironist thought, reducing it to a privatized aesthetic rather than a politically generative force. By highlighting these contradictions, the paper argues that genuine solidarity requires not only the celebration of contingency but also the cultivation of autonomy and linguistic inclusion across both private and public domains.

Yves Winter’s book, “Machiavelli and the Orders of Violence” depicts violence sophisticatedly in a modern way, interpreting Machiavelli with his original thoughts. What Winter mainly does in his book is reinterpreting main discussions of Machiavelli, deviating from the traditional interpretation of the violence.

"The Castle" is one of the good examples. In "The Castle", the Castle officials try to hinder the individuals in the village to be autonomous by solidifying the subordinates-superiors structure. The main plan of the Castle to remain its mysterious power is not to respond ever and conceal itself from the villagers. This strategy is to segregate the Castle from the village.

However, if the segregation is obvious, is there any solution we can find from Kafka’s novels to cure the state of alienation? This paper answers that question with three solutions. This paper proposes three solutions from Kafka’s novels, two from The Castle, one from In the Penal Colony. The three of them are self-doubt, self-affirmation, and solidarity in real relationships.
