"The rise of digital technology has led to the development of editin... more "The rise of digital technology has led to the development of editing services for commercial films available on DVD. These services will remove "objectionable" or "offensive" content for home viewers, usually those from a religious and culturally conservative background. Though there is clearly interest from these consumers in these services, questions of legality and ethics remain open to interpretation. Questions regarding the responsibilities of filmmakers and the audience are, however, more worthy of discussion. My paper deals with the following questions: Does an audience have a responsibility to encounter films in the way in which they were originally made? Do filmmakers or distributors or theater owners have a responsibility to provide audiences with films that do not incorporate sex, profanity, or violence? Should the burden of defining what is socially acceptable be placed with the creator or the audience? "
