This essay explores the dual influence of technology and symbolism on human emotion and autonomy, drawing upon Günther Anders' concept of "Promethean shame" and philosophical analyses of symbolic rituals, exemplified by Freemasonry. It argues that both domains, while capable of fostering positive outcomes like connectivity and ethical development, pose significant risks to individual agency. Technology, through algorithmic manipulation and surveillance, can subtly erode autonomy and induce feelings of inadequacy, as highlighted by Babette Babich's interpretation of Anders. Conversely, Freemasonry's transparent use of symbolism, grounded in Kendall Walton's "make-believe" theory, aims to cultivate moral reflection through deliberate emotional engagement. The essay evaluates the ethical implications of these influences, contrasting the opaque control mechanisms of technology with the overt symbolic practices of Freemasonry. Ultimately, it advocates for cultivating critical awareness, transparency, and informed participation to safeguard human autonomy and authentic emotional experiences in an increasingly complex digital age.
This paper explores spatial theory and knowledge production, focusing on university lodges as heterotopic spaces that blend institutional authority with counter-institutional knowledge practices. It discusses Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the rhizome to describe non-hierarchical knowledge networks and uses Lyotard’s critique of metanarratives and Derrida’s concepts of différance and trace to analyse Masonic knowledge practices.
