The number of international migrants has been continually increasing over the past five decades. The contributors to this volume dedicated to Professor Rebeca Raijman address various types of migrants like economic or labour migrants, forced migration and ethnic migrants. Implementing both qualitative and quantitative data and analyses, they provide insight on why individuals decide to migrate, how their decisions affect their own lives and the lives of their offspring, and how immigrants affect the receiving societies they arrive in.

Globalization, industrialization and structural changes in traditional rural employment patterns ... more Globalization, industrialization and structural changes in traditional rural employment patterns have caused rural communities such as the Israeli Kibbutz to search for development strategies in order to survive. Self development constitutes one possible approach to community development. It nurtures local entrepreneurial activities and relies basically on local resources in order to create new jobs and economic activities. These local activities of entrepreneurship generate variety and leverage resources and can therefore foster social capital development and contribute to the community's capacity. Community development requires a mix of resources including natural capital, produced economic capital, human capital and institutional capital. Social capital is the glue that holds them together, a network of social relations based upon norms of trust and reciprocity leading to outcomes of mutual benefits. Thus, social capital reflects the ability of community members to participate, cooperate, organize and interact. Since many rural communities such as the kibbutz are undergoing processes of crisis and change, innovative initiatives potentially promoting economic independence of individuals and development of the community are of major importance. Rather than assuming that entrepreneurship is primarily the outcome of social capital, this study focuses upon the interdependency of entrepreneurship and forms of capital required for community development.

By first acknowledging neoliberalism as the dominant ideology of our times, we then proceeded to trace its origins and ask how it might have affected both our academic research and the socioeconomic policies driving it. We contend that the ideology, along with the zeitgeist of the entrepreneur-hero, has led to our taken-for-granted impression that entrepreneurship is a panacea. It is our hope that renewed efforts into questioning our assumptions will demystify old acceptances, giving way to new policies that can reflect rigorous research conclusions and contextual realities. Neoliberalism, entrepreneurship policy, ideology, entrepreneurship research, economic growth 'In all my affairs it's a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on the things you have long taken for granted. '-Bertrand Russell This article has been written with equal contribution from each of the authors and was bestowed the Emerald Best Paper Award 2018 at the 17th International Entrepreneurship Forum Conference.

Entrepreneurial opportunities in changing communities
Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development, May 18, 2010

It also aims to explore the scope and variety of entrepreneurial opportunities in Kibbutzim located within a conceptual model of four clusters based on availability of economic and social capital.Design/methodology/approachThe sample for this study consists of 81 Kibbutzim representing 29 per cent of the Kibbutz population (277 Kibbutzim). Data were collected via official sources of the kibbutz movement and analyzed using Anova models comparing groups.FindingsThe findings reveal that both scope and variety of entrepreneurship vary within the four clusters of kibbutz communities and point to a positive influence of availability of economic and social community capital on entrepreneurial opportunities.Originality/valueThe paper presents the development of a conceptual model more sensitive to the heterogeneity of kibbutz communities than former dichotomous categorizations.
