Adaptive GOP Structure considers temporal variances of video sequence. In general, SVC encodes a video sequence with fixed GOP size. The coding performance is varying according to the temporal variance of a video sequence. Thus, Adaptive GOP Structure method is proposed. It selects GOP size adaptively by considering temporal variance of video sequence. In the experiments, the propose method showed the enhanced coding performance in most sequences. The PSNR gain of Crew sequence is up to 0.63 dB.

There are 4×4, 8×8, and 16×16 intra prediction modes in the current H.264/AVC. For the 4×4 intra prediction, coding efficiency is achieved by accurate prediction with small block size in relatively complicated regions, and the 16×16 intra prediction method can predict more accurately compared to 4x4 intra prediction with only one directional information in relatively homogeneous regions. We propose a unidirectional 4x4 intra prediction method adopting a small-size prediction and one directional prediction approaches. In order to improve coding efficiency, the proposed method is conducted by 4×4 block and their prediction directions are all the same, resulting that we need to send only one directional information for each macroblock. For intra-frame coding setting, we achieve 10.47% and 1.57% coding efficiency in BD-bitrate for only 16×16 intra mode and 4×4, 16×16 intra mode, respectively.

Proposal CLO algorithm contains from physical layer to video layer. Under the time-varying wireless channel condition, the CLO technique takes view-wise and the temporal priority of the multi-view video into consideration in order to decide the transmission of frames and its FEC level. At the handover situation, it is shown through computer simulation that the optimal quality of the multi-view video can be achieved using the minimum amount of resources if the proposed CLO technique is applied.

In the proposed method, a CU can have only one merge candidate list. So, Only one common merge candidate list is used for all PUs in a CU regardless of the PU partition type. The simulation results of proposed method showed that the encoder computational complexity was decreased by 3% to 6% and the decoder computational complexity was negligible change with the penalty of roughly 0.2%-0.5% coding loss. The proposed method has several advantages: it provides simpler design, reduced complexity, and improved parallelism.

A New Scanning Method for Network-adaptive Scalable Streaming Video Coding
Journal of KIISE:Computing Practices and Letters, 2002

Proposed scanning method can guarantee the subjectively improved picture quality of the region of the interest in the decoded video by managing the image information of that interested region to be encoded and transmitted most-preferentially, and also to be decoded most-preferentially. Proposed scanning method can lead the FGS coding method to achieve improved picture quality, in about 1dB ~ 3dB better, especially on the region of interest.

The shape-assisted block-based texture coding methodologies, such as shape-adaptive discrete cosine transform (SADCT), can use this segmentation information to improve coding efficiency. In this paper, we introduce the shape-adaptive region partitioning (SARP) methods which can reduce the number of coding blocks that partition the arbitrarily shaped region by modifying the block positions. By simply adding SARP method to aid the SADCT, the coded texture bits can be reduced by 5-10%, in comparison with the SADCT using common block-based coding infrastructure which is usually used in the MPEG-1/2 and H.263.

In contrast to the conventional rate control methods based on the mathematical rate distortion (RD) model and the feedback regression, proposed method can actively adapt to the rapid-varying image characteristics by establishing the global model for bitrate control and by using the SOFM based neural classifier to manage that model. Proposed rate control algorithm has 0.2 dB ~ 0.6 dB better performances than MPEG-4 macroblock-based rate control algorithm by evaluating with the encoded Peak Signal to Noise Ratios while maintaining similar overall computational complexity.

We report on investigations of the second and third steps, especially the use of multiple neural-nets to go from nonsegmented sequences of features to letters. Indications are that our procedure is robust and promising.

Design and implementation of an 8-view three-dimensional video player

We propose a structure for obtaining near-optimum speed by parallelizing the component modules to process large volumes of 8-view image data at a high speed. In order to exploit task parallelism in the video player, we have designed a multiple-video decoder, a view synthesizer that creates the 3-D image from the multi-view image data, and a 3-D renderer for an 8-view display in a pipeline structure. For load balancing and exploiting data parallelism in the modules, the decoder is divided into units of viewpoint, and the view synthesizer is geometrically divided based on the synthesized images. As a result of this experiment, 8-view images are correctly synthesized, and the sense of three dimensions can be observed when watching the images on the 8-view auto-stereoscopic display. The proposed structure could be used to process large volumes of multi-view image data at high speeds by utilizing the maximum capacity of the multi-core processors.
