This study examines the changing socialization environments of youth sports in modern and postmodern eras. We investigate how the norms related to goals in snowboarding differ from athletic goals of modern youth sports. The data includes semi-structured interviews with Finnish professional snowboarders. Our study indicates how the socialization environments of youth sports have become more diverse due to the norms cherished in action sports. Although snowboarding competitions continue the goal traditions of modern sports, the diversity and versatility of snowboarding styles and the array of goals within the sport allow participants to construct their identities in more creative ways than athletes in modern sports. Moreover, snowboarders avoid the seriousness of modern sports by ironizing the goal and rule orientation of sports also in snowboarding competitions.

Its contribution to cybersecurity workforce development focuses on organizational learning rather than individual skills development and relevant competencies. It was found that the utilization of thematic analysis methods develop individual readiness and expertise. It also enhances the maturity of an organization's processes, roles, communication, and exercise capabilities. Moreover, the exercises increase social trust between individuals and organizations through business-to-business cooperation. However, there were several barriers and challenges in utilizing learned skills and competencies within an organization, including a need to increase the capacity of staff members who participate in the exercise.

In this Foucauldian year-long ethnographic study on Finnish 18–20-year-old elite male ice hockey players I consider an athletic career as a moral question and examine what aspects of their behaviour are affected when these players submit to the external and internal control they encounter when advancing themselves and their careers, and how they problematize the codes that govern their actions. The players expressed six modes of subjection altogether that were important to cultivation of the self: exercising, nutrition, rest, motivation, player role and emotions. The processes of cultivation were strongly guided by coaches and well internalized by the players. However, the hockey players were also young people with interests and choices quite different from a disciplined athletic life, and the coaches also hel...

With the institutionalization and commercialization of action sports over the past two decades, and the introduction of mega-sports events such as the X Games, and the inclusion of some action sports into the Olympic Games (i.e., snowboarding, freestyle skiing, BMX), action sport athletes are increasingly working with coaches, psychologists, agents, managers and personal trainers to improve their performances. In this Insights paper we consider coaching in action sports via the case of Finnish professional snowboarders’ attitudes to coaches. Drawing upon conversations with elite freestyle snowboarders we briefly present insights into their perceptions of the various positions of coaches in professional snowboarding before we offer suggestions built upon a Problem-based learning approach for coaches interested in work...
