He received the Dipl. Ing. degree in telecommunication engineering from the Higher School of Tele... more He received the Dipl. Ing. degree in telecommunication engineering from the Higher School of Telecommunication of Brittany in 1992. He joined the France Telecom-CNET department on image communication in Paris, France, in 1992. He worked on image representation techniques and analysis. His research areas cover video compression algorithms, error resiliency of video compression algorithms, invariant representation of images and shapes, and model-based representation for interpersonal communications. He has been involved in the ISO/MPEG-4 project, in particular through the European platform MAVT and its successor MoMuSys. He later managed the France Telecom CNET project Oxygen on MPEG-4 multimedia teleconferencing systems. In 1999, he joined the Deutsche Telekom-Berkom Department on Multimedia Communication in Darmstadt within the context of joint Deutsche Telekom-France Telecom projects. He is currently Chairman of the MPEG-4 Systems subgroup.

Overview of the MPEG-7 standard

MPEG-7, formally known as Multimedia Content Description Interface, includes standardized tools (... more MPEG-7, formally known as Multimedia Content Description Interface, includes standardized tools (descriptors, description schemes, and language) enabling structural, detailed descriptions of audiovisual information at different granularity levels (region, image, video segment, collection) and in different areas (content description, management, organization, navigation, and user interaction). It aims at supporting and facilitating a wide range of applications such as media portals, content broadcasting, and ubiquitous multimedia. In this paper, we present a high-level overview of the MPEG-7 standard. We first discuss the scope, basic terminology, and potential applications. Next, we discuss the constituent components. Then, we compare the relationship with other standards to highlight its capabilities. Some parts of the standard are also covered in depth in this special issue in which this paper appears.
