Aiming to elaborate evaluation methods based on an appropriate model of exploratory search, we propose in this paper a model of the exploratory search process compliant with the acknowledged exploratory search characteristics, and we present a first evaluation of this model.

For example, the so-called “motivating scenarios” are a core component of the TOVE ontological engineering method elaborated by Grüninger and Fox (1995; Uschold and Grüninger, 1996). We ourselves used a “scenario approach” for designing and evaluating CoMMA, a corporate memory computer platform based on ontologies and agents; the approach was inspired by the scenario approaches proposed in the HCI and CSCW communities, which we consider more user-oriented than the “motivating scenarios” approach. In this paper, we account for our CoMMA experience and its major lesson: the necessity to apply the scenario approach more systematically for assessing the usability and utility of ontology-based tools.

A preliminary version of the WASABI database is already on-line 1 and will be enriched all along the project. The main originality of this project is the collaboration between the algorithms that will extract semantic metadata from the web and from song lyrics with the algorithms that will work on the audio. The following WebAudio enhanced applications will be associated with each song in the database: an online mixing table, guitar amp simulations with a virtual pedal-board, audio analysis visualization tools, annotation tools, a similarity search tool that works by uploading audio extract...

In this context, we created the Covid-on-the-Web project, which aims to assist the access, querying, and sense making of COVID-19 related literature by combining efforts from semantic web, natural language processing, and visualization fields. Particularly, in this paper, we present (i) an RDF dataset, a linked version of the “COVID-19 Open Research Dataset” (CORD-19), enriched via entity linking and argument mining, and (ii) the “Linked Data Visualizer” (LDViz), 28 which assists the querying and visual exploration of the referred dataset. The LDViz tool assists the exploration of different views of the data by combining a querying management interface, which enables the definition of meaningful subsets of data through SPARQL queries, and a visualizat...

The complexity of the task and the difficulty of defining this activity are reflected in the limits of existing evaluation methods for exploratory search systems. In order to improve them, we intend to design an evaluation method based on a user-centered model of exploratory search. In this work, we identified and defined the characteristics of exploratory search and used them as an information seeking model evaluation grid. We tested this analytic grid on two information seeking models: Ellis' and Marchionini's models. The results show that Marchonini's model does not match our evaluation method's requirements whereas on the other hand Ellis' model could be adapted to better suit exploratory search.

During exploratory search, the search objective is ill-defined favorable to discovery. A common limit of the existing linked data based exploratory search systems is that they constrain the exploration through single results selection and ranking schemes. The users can not influence the results to reveal specific aspects of knowledge that interest them. The models and algorithms we propose unveil such knowledge nuances by allowing the exploration of topics through several perspectives. The users adjust important computation parameters through three operations that help retrieving desired exploration perspectives: specification of interest criteria about the topic explored, controlled randomness injection to reveal unexpected knowledge and choice of the processed knowledge source(s). This paper describes the corresponding models, algorithms and the Discovery Hub implementation. It focuses on the three mentioned perspective-operations and their evaluations.

It describes their functionalities, their possible interfaces with other services and with the human user; as well as possible uses of these basic KM services by CoPs. Various tools available among the partners, that could offer some of these basic services, are presented. A web service-oriented architecture enabling to offer all such KM services in a modular way with possible interoperability with other Palette services or with some CoP tools, is proposed.

The approaches introduced here rely on graph-oriented knowledge representation, reasoning and operationalization to model and support actors, actions and interactions in web-based epistemic communities. The research results are applied to support and foster interactions in online communities and manage their resources.
