That is the question discussed by thirteen archaeologists and other scholars from five continents in this thought-provoking forum. Their responses are diverse and wide-ranging. While Edward Harris looks to archaeological stratigraphy for a material paradigm of the Anthropocene, Alice Gorman explores the extent of human impact on orbital space and lunar surfaces – challenging the assumption that the Anthropocene is confined to Earth. Jeff Benjamin investigates the sounds of the Anthropocene. Paul Graves-Brown questions the idea that the epoch had its onset with the invention of the steam engine, while Mark Hudson uses Timothy Morton’s concept of hyperobjects to imagine the dark artefacts of the future. Victor Paz doubts the practical relevance of the concept to archaeological chronologies, and Bruce Clarke warns archaeologists to steer clear of the Anthropo...

L27a contains 147 amino acids (the NH z-terminal methionine is removed after translation of the mRNA) and has a molecular weight of 16 476. Hybridization of the cDNA to digests of nuclear DNA suggests that there are 18-22 copies of the L27a gene. The mRNA for the protein is about 600 nucleotides in length. L27a is homologous to mouse L27a (there are 3 amino acid changes) and to yeast L29. Rat ribosomal protein L28 has 136 amino acids (its NHz-terminal methionine is also processed after translation) and has a molecular weight of 15 707. Hybridization of the cDNA to digests of nuclear DNA suggests that there are 9 or 10 copies of the L28 gene. The mRNA for the protein is about 640 nucleotides in length. L28 contains a possible internal duplication of 9 residues. Corrections are recorded in the sequences reported before for rat ribosomal proteins 84 and S!2.

Despite the fundamental importance of environmental history for diversity and conservation, there is little primary evidence concerning the nature of vegetation in north equatorial Southeast Asia during the Last Glacial Period (LGP). As a result, even the general distribution of vegetation during the Last Glacial Maximum is debated. Here we show, using the stable carbon isotope composition of ancient cave guano profiles, that there was a substantial forest contraction during the LGP on both peninsular Malaysia and Palawan, while rainforest was maintained in northern Borneo. These results directly support rainforest “refugia” hypotheses and provide evidence that environmental barriers likely reduced genetic mixing between Borneo and Sumatra flora and fauna. Moreover, it sheds light on possible early human dispersal events.

Aside from being burnt, the remains were found to exhibit a combination of cutmarks, scrape marks and impact scars indicative of disarticulation, defleshing, and hammerstone percussion. The results clearly demonstrate complex ritualistic treatment of the body prior to interment that, so far, has not been recorded in Southeast Asia. This thus adds to a growing data of varying burial traditions during the early Holocene across the region.
