Esthetics has now become an integral part of periodontal treatment plan. This article presents a case of a gummy smile in which esthetic correction was achieved through periodontal plastic surgical procedure wherein a 10-12 mm of partial-thickness flap was dissected apical to mucogingival junction followed by approximation of the flaps. This novel technique gave excellent post-operative results with enormous patient satisfaction. This surgical chair-side procedure being one of its kinds with outstanding results is very rarely performed by Periodontists. Thus, a lot of clinical work and literature review with this surgical technique is required. To make it a routine surgical procedure this technique can be incorporated as a part of periodontal plastic surgery in the text. Hence, we have put forward experience of a case with critical analysis of the surgical technique including the limitations of the technique.

Dental unit water lines are a source of infectivity from aspirations and from biofilms that form in which ever watery atmosphere. The centers of small-diameter tubing in dental unit waterlines are extra susceptible to biofilm development since they are prepared from a mixture of plastic materials which promote bacterial growth on it. Various method are used for prevention of bio-film formation-Anti-retraction valves, Chloridation of water, Use of ozone and ultraviolet light system and biocides or disinfectants like chlorhexidine gluconate, quaternary ammonium compound, povidine iodine, ethanol, hypochlorite, peroxide and glutaraldehyde. Hence, the purpose of the research was to assess bacterial infectivity of Dental Unit Water Lines before and after the use of OROTOL PLUS amongst the various DUWL.

It would be a myth to presume that a product which destroys semi its customers was given a legal status by way of judgment. Addictive nature of nicotine leads to tobacco dependence, which can be cured through Tobacco-use Cessation (TUC). Dentists can play a significant role in TUC as dental treatment often necessitates multiple visits, providing a platform for initiation, reinforcement, and support of tobacco cessation activities. Despite this proven potential, not many dental students routinely offer tobacco-use cessation counseling to their patients although the majority of them have positive attitude towards the idea. Hence, this study was carried out to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, behavior, constraints & practices of clinical dental students of four dental colleges of Gujarat, towards tobacco-use deterrence & termination encouragement in oral healthcare settings.
Effect of Tobacco Usage and Psychosocial Stress on Chronic Periodontal Disease: A Comprehensive Review of This Inimical Triad

It has been stated that stress in general is one of the major causal factors for initiation of tobacco use followed by peer pressure.Apart from causing lung cancer, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, stroke, etc; smoking and smokeless tobacco also leads to detrimental effects on oral health leading to progression of periodontal diseases & oral cancer and significantly affecting the quality of life. Tobacco products appear to have direct local effects on periodontal tissue and can alter the host response. Although smokers benefit from periodontal therapy, clinical improvements are less than those for non-smokers. Also, stress has been considered one of the identifiable risk factor for periodontal disease progression. Analogous to smoking stress hypothesized to reduce...

Conventional radiographs including intraoral and panoramic imaging are used very frequently for this purpose. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is a new era in the field of oral radiology making the innovation provide high-quality, thin-slice accurate imaging. CBCT comes to complete help in providing new data to diagnose periodontal lesions. It is an imaging modality which would give an undistorted three-dimensional (3D) vision of a tooth and surrounding structures which is essential to improve the diagnostic potential. It has got the advantage of less exposure of radiation to the patient and reduced scan time. In the field of periodontology, it best enables the clinician to evaluate the crestal alveolar bone architecture and helps in treatment planning for implant placement, hence providin...

It would be a fallacy to assume that a product which kills half its consumers was given a legal status by way of logic. Portuguese introduced tobacco to India 400 years ago. Ever since, Indians have used tobacco in various forms. Addictive nature of nicotine leads to tobacco dependence. Tobacco causes over 20 categories of fatal and disabling diseases including oral cancer. In the future it is imperative to impose a ban on oral tobacco products, strengthen enforcement of existing regulations, establish coordinating mechanisms at the levels of central and state and mobilize people to combat the problem. Taxes on tobacco products should be raised and the generated revenue could be spent for the strengthening of the tobacco control program. This article reviews the tobacco use in India, tobacco dependence among people, laws to stub the tobacco inflow in the society and role of dental professionals in tobacco use cessat...

The use of lasers in periodontics is a little more complicated because of the presence of dental hard and soft tissue. However, the availability of a number of laser systems ranging from erbium hard tissue lasers to diode, CO2, Nd:YAG soft tissue lasers have managed to find their place not only in periodontal practice but also in restorative, esthetic and surgical treatments. The use of lasers in periondontal procedures has long been discussed and scrutinized and this article presents a few case reports of periodontal procedures done using a diode laser.

However in certain cases endodontic treatment or retreatment is not feasible, which leaves the only option that is peri-radicular surgical procedure. Four cases of single-rooted teeth with infected radicular cyst and associated sinus tract were operated with the peri-radicular surgical procedure to remove non-healing pathological tissue and to augment the defect with the bioactive bone graft material. As a result, peri-radicular disorders, which were condemned to treatment failure in the past can now be dealt with successfully.

Progression of gingival enlargement affects the normal oral hygiene practice and may interfere with mastication, speech, etc. It gradually becomes a source of pain and disfigurement. There is a wide variation in the presentation of clinical and histological features of such gingival enlargements. Nifedipine is one such drug of the family of calcium channel blockers that has the potential to cause gingival overgrowth in patients taking the same, although in a limited number of cases. The management of such cases requires a multi-pronged approach including thorough scaling and root planning, drug substitution, and surgical approach. This case report highlights the management of one such case of a patient taking nifedipine for the management of hypertension.

Researchers are constantly innovating to integrate technology into dentistry. Of all the latest technological innovations in dentistry, the most talked about innovations are threedimensional (3D) printing and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), which have made the treatment planning and execution a whole lot easier. Three-dimensional printing like CBCT has been gaining much popularity in the masses. Three-dimensional printing technologies are evolving rapidly in the recent years and can be used with a wide array of different materials. In addition to rapid prototyping, the dominant use in the past, they are now being used in all manner of manufacturing applications in a diversity of industries such as sports goods, fashion items such as jewelry and necklaces to aerospace components, tools for automobile industry, and medical implants also in dentistry for producing models, making scaffolds, etc. In future, 3D printing has ability to change the way many products are manufactured and produced and bring an era of 'personal manufacturing'. This article introduces 3D printing and gives little information about the technology behind the working of 3D printers. It also gives information about the applications of 3D printers and materials most often used for 3D printed scaffolds for periodontal regeneration.

Conventional root canal treatment, apexification with biomaterials, and extractions are the procedures of choice to treat a nonvital tooth. These treatment options do not give predictable outcomes in the regeneration of the pulp tissue. This can be easily achieved by regenerative endodontics wherein the diseased or a nonvital tooth is replaced by a healthy and functional pulp-dentin complex. The rationale for regenerative endodontics follows tissue engineering techniques. This article reviews the shift in regenerative endodontic techniques.

There is an evident link between tobacco use or consumption and poverty. The widespread use of almost all forms of tobacco among the Indian population can be attributed to the social and cultural acceptance in the country. Cigarette and Other Tobacco Products Act, 2003 (COTPA) is the legislation that regulates tobacco in India. The prime objective of this review is to compile the literature with information about the laws regulating tobacco use and the status of implementation of tobacco control provisions covered under COTPA. Since effective tobacco control measures involve multi-stakeholders i.e public health, law, trade and commerce, industry, consumer, human rights and child development, coordinated efforts are required to successful enforcement. The outcome of the current literature is bridging the gaps to make the tobacco control a very important public health goal and there...
