Since then many of the rooms in it must have been occupied at one time or another by men of great distinction, but we have no official records until fairly recently to show where they lived. W e know when they came up and went down, we know their tutor and what degree they took, but their rooms are not listed and in most cases we have nothing but tradition or references in their biographies or letters. However there is at least one staircase that we can be sure about and that is letter E, Great Court, between the Chapel and the Great Gate. Macaulay, Thackeray and J. G. Frazer lived there in the nineteenth century and in the seventeenth Isaac Newton certainly lived in the rooms on the first floor next to the Great Gate.

The processes involve a depolarization of the membranes of the transverse tubular system which, in turn, causes a release of calcium from its intracellular storage location, the sarcoplasmic reticulum. It seems that a change in potential across the first structure can trigger the release from the second, adjacent structure. If the time and voltage dependent ionic currents are blocked, small movements of charge can be detected when a fibre is depolarized from a normal resting potential to a potential at which contraction is activated. These charge movements, which do not behave as currents passing through ionic channels, may be part of a trigger mechanism.

Electrical Properties of the Transverse Tubular System
Physiology and Biochemistry, 1973

The electrical properties of nerve and muscle are analyzed in terms of the ionic and capacity currents flowing across the cell surface membrane. Morphological evidence suggests that the tubular system can be represented in frog twitch striated muscle fibers as a set of regular two-dimensional tubular networks in which the tubular diameter is smaller than the mesh and the mesh is smaller than the fiber diameter. Access resistance occurs because of constriction of the tubular lumen at the fiber surface or tortuosity of the tubular path near the surface. Either an increased tubular length or a reduced luminal caliber over a significant length increases the radial resistance near the fiber surface. The chapter also presents a linear and a nonlinear method for obtaining the spatial distribution of potential in the tubular system.

Articles were retrieved from several prominent databases, selected, reviewed, grouped into several themes and synthesized. This paper suggests that applying blockchain in the supply chain could improve its performance in terms of transparency, traceability, sustainability, trust, and cost-efficiency. As a cutting-edge technology, blockchain has not been widely implemented in supply chain industries. Research on blockchain application in the supply chain is also relatively limited. This paper contributes to the literature by offering a comprehensive map of research on blockchain potentials in improving supply chain performance. The findings of this study will also be beneficial for managers who seek for a comprehensive understanding of how blockchain technology affects their companies particularly in supply chain management.

The existence of functional groups of roselle plant secondary metabolites on the surface of prepared Se NPs was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The formation of crystalline nanoparticles with anisotropic shape was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images. Furthermore, we also studied anti-oxidative and protective effects of Se NPs in streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetes rats. These STZ induced diabetic rats were daily exposed to Se NPs or/and insulin treatment and the effect of Se NPs on the factors correlated to oxidative damage in the rat testes were evaluated. The biochemical studies showed that the Se NPs are capable to enhance the serum testosterone reduction caused due to STZ induced diabetes. In addition, Se NPs can significantly reduce the oxidative stress indicators of the testicular tissue such as nitric oxide and lipid peroxidation. However, the treatment of Se NPs on the STZ induced diabetic rats increased the activities of antioxidant enzyme as well as the glutathione content in testicular tissues. Furthermore, microscopic studies revealed that the Se NPs are capable of preventing the histological damage in the testes of STZ induced diabetic rats. Altogether, these results explained the possible effects of Se NPs in attenuating oxidative damage induced by diabetes, especially in the testicular tissue.

Three hundred ninety five patients with type 2 diabetes in our hospital from January 2012 to January 2016 were followed up with an average of 3.8 years. The incidence of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases between diabetes combined with hyperlipidemia group (195 patients) and diabetes group (200 patients) were made a comparison. Multivariable Cox's proportional hazards regression model was used to analyze the effect of hyperlipidemia on the incidence of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases in patients with type 2 diabetes. Diastolic blood pressure, systolic blood pressure, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, body mass index and hyper-sensitive C-reactive protein were higher in diabetes combined with hyperlipidemia group than in diabetes group (P < 0.05). At the end of the follow-up period, all-cause mortality, cardio-cerebrovascula...

Aspects of Practical Application of the Comson Flaw-diagnosis System

The socalled Basic-System, containing hard- and software for flaw-classification in butt-welds is now available on the market. After a short repetition of the leading characteristics of the COMSON technology the paper will report the major aspects and results of previous practical application with special respect to a round robin test, carried out by a number of operators on a series of different weld flaws, to verify COMSON system liability.
The Capacity of Cell Membranes: Gating Current Measurements

In particular these studies supported the idea that the cell membrane was a very thin lipid layer (Gorter & Grendel, 1925; Davson & Danielli, 1943). A lipid layer some 5 mm thick would be expected to have a capacitance in the region of 0.9 μF/cm2 (assuming a dielectric constant of 5). Experimentally a figure of about 1 μF/cm2 came to be regarded as more or less universally applicable. In 1968 Cole wrote “the work by Fricke and many others has….. produced so wide a variety of experiments as to make a membrane capacity (within a factor of 2) of 1 μF/cm2 a physical constant of most living cells”.

A series of single-factor in situ experiments was conducted in a mesotrophic lake in Brandenburg,... more A series of single-factor in situ experiments was conducted in a mesotrophic lake in Brandenburg, North Germany, to study the predatory impact of Eudiaptomus graciloides (adults, copepodites, nauplii), cyclopoid copepods (adult Diacyclops bicuspidatus, Thermocyclops oithonoides) and daphnids (adult Daphnia hyalina, Daphnia cucullata) on the microbial community (bacteria, autotrophic picoplankton, flagellates, ciliates). All zooplankton species tested reduced the ciliate community significantly and ingestion rates were always higher for ciliates in the 20-55 µm size category as compared to smaller ciliates (10-20 µm). Adult E.graciloides, which exhibited the highest predatory impact on ciliates, differed from cyclopoids and daphnids by their ability to decimate ciliates to very low abundances. Ingestion rates of ciliates by the crustacean zooplankton followed the sequence E.graciloides > daphnids = cyclopoids = copepodites. While top-down control was evident for ciliates, top-down effects down to the autotrophic picoplankton and flagellates were mostly restricted to Daphnia-dominated treatments. Top-down effects were never strong enough to produce negative bacterial growth rates. For all zooplankton tested, clearance rates for ciliates exceeded those for phytoplankton. Besides the potential of the crustacean zooplankton to influence the structure of ciliate communities, ciliates may contribute to the energy demands of copepods and daphnids, especially when phytoplankton resources are limited.
