Exploitation of Meirama Lake, a pit lake forming in a former lignite mine, could supplement the Abegondo-Cecebre reservoir, the city’s main water supply. We analysed the hydrochemistry and the Mero River basin regulations to determine whether the water quantity and quality could meet the needs during periods of increased demand and drought, and still satisfy ecological conditions required by law. Our results indicated that joint use of the two reservoirs is feasible. The local administration is implementing the recommendations by building a tunnel to tap into the pit lake.ZusammenfassungSaisonale Steigerungen des Wasserbedarfs während Trockenperioden belasten die Wasserversorgung in der Stadt La Coruna (Nordwestspanien) und deren Umland. Radioactive decay is an important subject to take into account when studying the thermo-hydro-dynamic behavior of the buffer clay material used in the containment of radioactive waste. The modern concepts for the multibarrier design of a repository of high level waste in deep geologic formations consider that once canisters have failed, the buffer clay material must ensure the retention and/or delay of radionuclides within the time framework given in the assessment studies. Within the clay buffer, different chemical species are retarded/fixed according to several physicochemical processes (ion exchange, surface complexation, precipitation, matrix diffusion, ...) but typical approaches do not consider the eventuality that radioactive species change their chemical nature (i.e. phase) thereby affecting their reactive behavior. The radioactive decay of an element takes place independently of the phase (aqueous, solid or gaseous) to which it belongs. This means that, in terms of radionuclide fixation, some geochemical processes will be effective scavengers (for instance mineral precipitation of crystal growth) while others will not (for instance ion exchange and/or sorption). In this contribution we present a reactive radioactive decay model of any number of chemical components including those that belong to decay series. The model, which is named FLOW-DECAY, also takes into account flow and isotopic migration and it has been applied considering a hypothetical model scenario provided by the project ENRESA 2000 and direct comparison with the results generated by the probabilistic code GoldSim. Results indicate that FLOW-DECAY may simulate the decay processes in a similar way that GoldSim, being the differences related to factors associated to code architecture.

Depending on the depth of the lakes, the anoxisation process originating from the bottom is the first phase of the lake's methanogenesis. For this, the course of many thousands of years is necessary, so the studies carried out in the lakes are limited to the current knowledge of the state in which they are, without being able to have real information in this process of methanogenesis. There are no data available on the generation process of a natural lake in its primary stages. In this case, taking advantage of the rehabilitation of the old open-pit mining of Meirama (Northwest Spain), consisting of the controlled flooding o...

The ability of water to supply the different populations has different origins: water taken from river diversions, water from underground catchments, water from lakes and reservoirs, water from the recirculation of treated water, etc. Episodes of turbidity and color changes in the water supply in pipe distribution systems are non-isolated problems that occur in many cities and towns. In particular, sedimentation in water supply pipelines and the subsequent resuspension of these particles in the system have created the need to investigate the processes and variables that promote turbidity episodes, including why, when, and where these episodes occur. In this study, different physicochemical parameters were investigated and analyzed in the water supply distribution network of the city of La Coruña (northwest Spain) through a pipe monitoring panel under real operating conditions. The supply waters come from the Mero rive...

The present model incorporates some efficient tools that evaluate the natural conditions of the water catchments including an evaluation of the free water flow based on the continuity of mass. The resulting model does not include the verification of the continuity of momentum nor a turbulence model, but still provides a proper overall assessment of the flow in the watershed, that can be refined with a further turbulent assessment of the free surface flow. The model has been verified through its comparison with some benchmark problems showing to be both accurate and numerically efficient. Finally, it has been used in the resolution of some practical cases that show its capabilities with a special focus on the Barcés river watershed, intensely monitored by this research group in the last decades.

Characterization and geochemical–geotechnical properties of granite sawdust produced by the dimension stone industry of O Porriño (Pontevedra, Spain)

Abstract The dimension stone industry is one of the leading economic activities of Galicia and it... more Abstract The dimension stone industry is one of the leading economic activities of Galicia and it is also an important industry in many other parts in the world. During the sawing and preparation of dimension stone, a large amount of granite sawdust is generated. In the O Porriño area alone, located in the southern part of Galicia, c. 300 000 tonnes are produced every year. According to current EU Directives, granite sawdust is considered to be waste and its disposal must conform to the environmental standards that result from their implementation. The pertinent Spanish laws have established the need to lay down a suitable strategy for the characterization and assessment of sawdust products for the purpose of their satisfactory integration into the dimension stone productive chain. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive characterization study of the granite sawdust of O Porriño (Pontevedra, NW Spain), including a description of its physicochemical, mineralogical and geotechnical properties. On the basis of the results of this characterization, we raise the question of the suitability of this material for use in earthworks as well as in the construction of layers for landfill sealing and/or waterproofing. Our findings show that the properties of granite sawdust are suitable for such purposes, and other possible uses are being studied in continuing research.

The study has shown that a stratified lake is formed where the shape of the filling (first with groundwater and later surface waters from the nearby rivers were added) has influenced the formation of the lake profile. The Meirama mine is an open-pit brown lignite mine located in NW Spain. Exploitation ended in March 2008, leaving a pit of approximately 146 hm 3 with a maximum depth of 205 m. The rehabilitation of the pit consisted of the creation of a lake that will serve as an auxiliary water reservoir for the city of La Coruña. The filling process lasted approximately 8 years (March 2008-May 2016) with subterranean and surface contributions from the environment. The formation of an invariant chemocline and a seasonal thermocline was observed. Therefore, in this work, (the first of a series of two articles), an analysis of the evolution of various physicochemical parameters, elements, and compounds at certain heights (the surface, the first 2 m (2 mbs), at 59 masl, and at the bottom (2 masl)). In this first article, the physicochemical parameters of pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, and some metallic elements (iron and manganese) are analysed. From the analyzed parameters it can be seen the creation of a surface thermocline and a chemocline at a depth of 59 masl with the beginning of the formation of anoxic conditions of the bottom of the pit through the consumption of oxygen.

The proposed model considers surface and groundwater interactions to be 2-D horizontally distributed and depthaveraged through a diffusive wave approach. Infiltration rates, overland flows and evapotranspiration processes are considered by diffuse discharge from surface water, non-saturated subsoil and groundwater table. Recent developments also allow for the management of surface water flow control through the capacity of diversion on river beds, spillways and outflow operations of floodgates in weirs and dams of reservoirs. The application regards the actual hydrology of the Mero River watershed, with two important water bodies mainly concerned with the water resources management at the Cecebre Reservoir and the present flooding of a deep coal mining excavation. The model was adapted and calibrated during a period of five years (2008/2012) with the help of hydrological parameters, registered flow rates, water levels, precipitation, water uses and water management operations in surface and groundwater bodies. The results presented predict the likely evolution of the Cecebre Reservoir, the flow rates in rivers and the flooding of the Meirama open pit.
