The key role of virtual environments in this sector is to provide a spatial context for historical records, artifacts and places. This spatial context makes the material more readily understandable by the public and provides a useful framework for teaching and research. Furthermore, the delivery of such material over the Internet turns heritage itself into a virtual commodity with all the associated economic advantages. Freed from physical and geographical constraints the material can be made available to a much wider audience at remote locations.

Conventional non-digital physical stop-frame animation is based on the inherently intuitive direc... more Conventional non-digital physical stop-frame animation is based on the inherently intuitive direct two handed manipulation of a passive figure. Digital media may provide powerful software tools for animation but they do so through less intuitive interfaces. We argue that we can unite these two areas in a new system which utilises the full potential of the stop-frame animators' tacit skills. We seek to create a haptic animation tool, the exact form of which is determined through the conduct of participatory design. This paper first introduces a theoretical framework on the design of the proposed animation system which is built in the digital/physical frontier. We then discuss the selection of participatory design as our methodology and describe the initial steps of this process such as interviewing animators about their practice and exposing them to the haptic device. We finally give a brief description of the initial technical and conceptual conception of the future system.

Focus extends from the showing of art to its creation, and the empowerment and agency of communities through enactive learning. In this model the arts organisation acts as a catalyst for collaborative action and enquiry involving academia and a wider ecosystem of communities and stakeholders including the public, academia, artists, digital creative industry, maker spaces and local government. The new model entails embedding of research, innovation and arts practice within the arts organisation itself. We illustrate the approach with examples of projects spanning mental health, physical disability, young people, veterans, children and parents, which have had a real impact on health and well-being of our communities.

However, there are many degrees of scale between these extremes and there have been few attempts to seek the integration of systems that were designed for distinct contexts and tasks. The proposition that motivated the Scale project team was that through such systems integration it would be possible to create an enhanced perception of interaction between human participants who might be co-located or remotely engaged, separated in either (or both) time or space. A further aim was to examine how the use of these technologies might inform current s discourse on the performative.

In this paper we propose a novel interaction technique that creates the illusion of tactile explo... more In this paper we propose a novel interaction technique that creates the illusion of tactile exploration of museum artefacts which are otherwise impossible to touch. The technique meets the contextual necessity, often requested by museum curators, to background technology and to direct the focus of the museum visitor's experience to the artefact itself. Our approach relies on the combination of haptic interaction and the adaptation of a well-known illusion that enables museum visitors to make sense of the actual physical non-touchable artefact in an embodied way, using their sensory and motor skills. We call this technique Haptic Augmented Reality.

Spellbinder is a new interactive digital medium based on camera phones and image matching. Using ... more Spellbinder is a new interactive digital medium based on camera phones and image matching. Using Spellbinder, digital content can be embedded in the real world by taking a photograph of an object or place. The digital content can be released by another user by taking another photograph of the same location. Spellbinder does not require special markers or barcodes to be placed in the world. Unlike tracking technologies such as global positioning systems, the focus is on what specifically is being looked at rather than where the user is. The Branded Tribes research project is exploring uses of this technology for social interaction in city spaces using an approach of research by design. Graphics of real world brandscapes are used as placeholders for virtual computer graphics. We report innovative outcomes from the first phase of this research.

The advent of metaverses provide exciting opportunities for augmented reality research. We have c... more The advent of metaverses provide exciting opportunities for augmented reality research. We have created a number of interactions between the metaverse Second Life and the real world. Camera phone image matching creates portals and triggers the metaverse to mimic real locations. Image processing, tracking, projection and 3D video sprites create varied possibilities for people and avatars to have presence in each others worlds. We argue that these multiform contacts and overlaps between multiple points in the real world and an extensive and distinct metaverse constitute a new class of augmented reality interaction. Such a system of multiple parallel social existences may point to a mass social networking phenomenon built on the overlapping of a metaverse with the real world which we call Augmented Duality.

This project presents a new display concept, which brings together Haptics, Augmented and Mixed R... more This project presents a new display concept, which brings together Haptics, Augmented and Mixed Reality and Tangible Computing within the context of an intuitive conceptual design environment. The project extends the paradigm of Augmented Prototyping by allowing modelling of virtual geometry on the physical prototype, which can be touched by means of a haptic device. Wireless tracking of the physical prototype is achieved in three different ways by attaching to it a 'Speck', a tracker and Nintendo Wii Remote and it provides continuous tangible interaction. The physical prototype becomes a tangible interface augmented with Mixed Reality and with a novel 3D haptic design system.

Unfortunately such an approach has the drawback that only the Symmetric axis transform can be computed and not the more practical smoothed local symmetries or the more general symmetry set. Using singularity theory we introduce an extended distance transform which may be used to capture more of the symmetries of a shape. We describe the relationship of this extended distance transform to the skeletal shape descriptors themselves and other geometric phenomema related to the boundary of the curve. We then show how the extended distance transform can be used to derive skeletal descriptions of an object.

In this paper, we propose a new approach to the map building task: the implementation of the Spat... more In this paper, we propose a new approach to the map building task: the implementation of the Spatial Semantic Hierarchy (SSH), proposed by B. Kuipers, on a real robot fitted with an omnidirectional camera. The original Kuiper's formulation of the SSH was slightly modified, in order to manage in a more efficient way the knowledge the real robot collects while moving in the environment. The sensory data experienced by the robot are transformed by the different levels of the SSH in order to obtain a compact representation of the environment. This knowledge is stored in the form of a topological map and, eventually, of a metrical map. The aim of this paper is to show that a catadioptric omnidirectional camera is a good sensor for the SSH and nicely couples with several elements of the SSH. The panoramic view and rotational invariance of our omnidirectional camera makes the identification and labelling of place a simple matter. A deeper insight is that the tracking and identification of events on an omnidirectional image such as occlusions and alignments can be used for the segmentation of continuous sensory image data into discrete topological and metric elements of robot maps. Such a combination of the SSH and omnidirectional vision provides a powerful general framework for robot map making and indeed new insights into the concept of "place" in such activities. Some preliminary experiments performed with a real robot in a unmodified office environment are presented.

Applied artists and product designers encounter difficulties in adapting to digital tools which c... more Applied artists and product designers encounter difficulties in adapting to digital tools which could theoretically improve their practice. The Tacitus project has adopted user-centered methodologies to investigate the potential advantage offered by digital media, particularly during the germinal phase of the design process, by developing a novel interface which exploits spatial input, haptic force-feedback and stereovision. This paper presents theoretical implications and experimental results obtained from the first studies of an early prototype for sketching in three dimensions, with the focus on qualitative evaluation. The underlying principle of the 3D sketching 'widget' is to support designers by merging those qualities typically offered by sketching and modeling with advantages of digital interfaces. The first part of the paper presents a review of guidelines extracted from research within the Design and the Scientific Community. The second part describes the prototype, with qualitative evaluation of its advantages and drawbacks, in terms of usability and perceived workload, for feed back into iterative development.
