In this research we forensically acquire and analyze the device-stored data and network traffic o... more In this research we forensically acquire and analyze the device-stored data and network traffic of 20 popular instant messaging applications for Android. We were able to reconstruct some or the entire message content from 16 of the 20 applications tested, which reflects poorly on the security and privacy measures employed by these applications but may be construed positively for evidence collection purposes by digital forensic practitioners. This work shows which features of these instant messaging applications leave evidentiary traces allowing for suspect data to be reconstructed or partially reconstructed, and whether network forensics or device forensics permits the reconstruction of that activity. We show that in most cases we were able to reconstruct or intercept data such as: passwords, screenshots taken by applications, pictures, videos, audio sent, messages sent, sketches, profile pictures and more.

Genome-Wide Genetic Analysis Using Genetic Programming: The Critical Need for Expert Knowledge

The availability of chip-based technology facilitates the measurement of thousands of DNA sequence variation from across the human genome. The challenge is to sift through these high-dimensional datasets to identify combinations of interacting DNA sequence variations that are predictive of common diseases. The goal of this study is to develop and evaluate a genetic programming (GP) approach to attribute selection and classification in this domain. We simulated genetic datasets of varying size in which the disease model consists of two interacting DNA sequence variations that exhibit no independent effects on class (i.e. epistasis). We show that GP is no better than a simple random search when classification accuracy is used as the fitness function. We then show that including pre-processed estimates of attribute quality using Tuned ReliefF (TuRF) in a multi-objective fitness function that also includes accuracy significantly improves the performance of GP over that of random search. This study demonstrates that GP may be a useful computational discovery tool in this domain. This study raises important questions about the general utility of GP for these types of problems, the importance of data pre-processing, the ideal functional form of the fitness function, and the importance of expert knowledge. We anticipate this study will provide an important baseline for future studies investigating the usefulness of GP as a general computational discovery tool for large-scale genetic studies.

Video game consoles can no longer be viewed as just gaming consoles but rather as full multimedia... more Video game consoles can no longer be viewed as just gaming consoles but rather as full multimedia machines, capable of desktop computer-like performance. The past has shown that game consoles have been used in criminal activities such as extortion, identity theft, and child pornography, but with their ever-increasing capabilities, the likelihood of the expansion of criminal activities conducted on or over the consoles increases. This research aimed to take the initial step of understanding the Xbox One, the most powerful Microsoft console to date. We report the outcome of conducting a forensic examination of the Xbox One, and we provide our Xbox One data set of hard drive images and unique files so that the forensic community may expand upon our work. The Xbox One was found to have increased security measures over its predecessor (Xbox 360). The encryption of the data and the new file types introduced made it difficult to discern potential digital evidence. While these added security features caused great difficulty in forensically acquiring digital forensic artifacts, some important and interesting digital evidence was gathered using open-source tools. We were able to find digital evidence such as times that the user initially set up the console, and times when the system was restored or shutdown. We were also able to determine what games and applications had been downloaded along with when the games were played. Finally, through our network forensic experiments, we were able to determine that various applications had different levels of security and that game traffic was encrypted.

Background: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) are commonl... more Background: Long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) are commonly used together in the same households to improve malaria control despite inconsistent evidence on whether such combinations actually offer better protection than nets alone or IRS alone. Methods: Comparative tests were conducted using experimental huts fitted with LLINs, untreated nets, IRS plus untreated nets, or combinations of LLINs and IRS, in an area where Anopheles arabiensis is the predominant malaria vector species. Three LLIN types, Olyset W , PermaNet 2.0 W and Icon Life W nets and three IRS treatments, pirimiphosmethyl, DDT, and lambda cyhalothrin, were used singly or in combinations. We compared, number of mosquitoes entering huts, proportion and number killed, proportions prevented from blood-feeding, time when mosquitoes exited the huts, and proportions caught exiting. The tests were done for four months in dry season and another six months in wet season, each time using new intact nets. Results: All the net types, used with or without IRS, prevented >99% of indoor mosquito bites. Adding PermaNet 2.0 W and Icon Life W , but not Olyset W nets into huts with any IRS increased mortality of malaria vectors relative to IRS alone. However, of all IRS treatments, only pirimiphos-methyl significantly increased vector mortality relative to LLINs alone, though this increase was modest. Overall, median mortality of An. arabiensis caught in huts with any of the treatments did not exceed 29%. No treatment reduced entry of the vectors into huts, except for marginal reductions due to PermaNet 2.0 W nets and DDT. More than 95% of all mosquitoes were caught in exit traps rather than inside huts.

Implications of bio-efficacy and persistence of insecticides when indoor residual spraying and long-lasting insecticide nets are combined for malaria prevention

Background: Bio-efficacy and residual activity of insecticides used for indoor residual spraying ... more Background: Bio-efficacy and residual activity of insecticides used for indoor residual spraying (IRS) and long-lasting insecticide nets (LLINs) were assessed against laboratory-reared and wild populations of the malaria vector, Anopheles arabiensis in south eastern Tanzania. Implications of the findings are examined in the context of potential synergies and redundancies where IRS and LLINs are combined. Methods: Bioassays were conducted monthly for six months on three LLIN types (Olyset W PermaNet 2.0 W ,and Icon Life W) and three IRS treatments (2 g/m 2 pirimiphos-methyl, 2 g/m 2 DDT and 0.03 g/m 2 lambda-cyhalothrin, sprayed on mud walls and palm ceilings of experimental huts). Tests used susceptible laboratory-reared An. arabiensis exposed in cones (nets and IRS) or wire balls (nets only). Susceptibility of wild populations was assessed using WHO diagnostic concentrations and PCR for knock-down resistance (kdr) genes. Results: IRS treatments killed ≥ 85% of mosquitoes exposed on palm ceilings and ≥ 90% of those exposed on mud walls, but up to 50% of this toxicity decayed within 1-3 months, except for DDT. By 6th month, only 7.5%, 42.5% and 30.0% of mosquitoes died when exposed to ceilings sprayed with pirimiphos-methyl, DDT or lambda-cyhalothrin respectively, while 12.5%, 36.0% and 27.5% died after exposure to mud walls sprayed with the same insecticides. In wire-ball assays, mortality decreased from 98.1% in 1st month to 92.6% in 6th month in tests on PermaNet 2.0 W , from 100% to 61.1% on Icon Life W and from 93.2% to 33.3% on Olyset W nets. In cone bioassays, mortality reduced from 92.8% in 1st month to 83.3% in 6th month on PermaNet 2.0 W , from 96.9% to 43.80% on Icon Life W and from 85.6% to 14.6% on Olyset W. Wild An. arabiensis were 100% susceptible to DDT, 95.8% to deltamethrin, 90.2% to lambda cyhalothrin and 95.2% susceptible to permethrin. No kdr gene mutations were detected.

Lanthanum Carbonate Is an Effective Hypophosphatemic Agent for Hemodialysis Patients Intolerant of Other Phosphate Binders

Background: Lanthanum carbonate (LC) is a noncalcium-containing phosphate binder of proven utilit... more Background: Lanthanum carbonate (LC) is a noncalcium-containing phosphate binder of proven utility in treating hyperphosphatemia in dialysis patients, and displays a good tolerability profile. Objective: This study addressed whether this tolerability profile could result in improved phosphate control in patients intolerant of other phosphate binders, and who remain hyperphosphatemic despite intensive dietary advice and adequate dialysis provision. Design, Setting, and Patients: This 18-month study, from a large urban hemodialysis unit, studied 55 patients identified by the multidisciplinary team as fulfilling the following criteria: persistent hyperphosphatemia; intolerance of, or admitted nonadherence to, prescribed phosphate binders (either calcium-based or sevelamer); and provision of adequate dialysis (urea reduction ratio, .65%). Intervention and Main Outcome Measure: LC was substituted for existing phosphate binders, and results were compared between baseline and 3 months after the initiation of LC. Results: A significant fall in phosphate level from 2.28 6 0.55 mmol/L to 1.89 6 0.45 mmol/L (7.06 6 1.70 mg/dL to 5.85 6 1.39 mg/dL) was evident 3 months after the medication switch (P , .001). This fall was associated with a significant increase in the number of patients achieving United Kingdom Renal Association guidelines for serum phosphate level (17% to 48%; P 5 .001). Mean phosphate-binder pill burden fell significantly by 3 months after the initiation of LC, from 7.8 6 3.4 tablets daily to 3.6 6 2.3 tablets daily. A small but significant increase also occurred in serum bicarbonate levels, from 23.3 6 2.2 mmol/L (23.3 6 2.2 mEq/L) at baseline to 23.9 6 2.5 mmol/L (23.9 6 2.5 mEq/L) at 3 months (P 5 .03). This was observed despite a prescribed reduction in dialysate bicarbonate concentration across the population (P 5 .03). Conclusion: This study demonstrated the utility of LC in hemodialysis patients intolerant of alternative phosphate binders, and suggests an advantage of this agent in this patient group.

The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the human lumbosacral joint behaves d... more The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that the human lumbosacral joint behaves differently from L1-L5 joints and provides primary moment-rotation responses under pure moment flexion and extension and left and right lateral bending on a level-by-level basis. In addition, range of motion (ROM) and stiffness data were extracted from the moment-rotation responses. Ten T12-S1 column specimens with ages ranging from 27 to 68 years (mean: 50.6+/-13.2) were tested at a load level of 4.0 N m. Nonlinear flexion and extension and left and right lateral bending moment-rotation responses at each spinal level are reported in the form of a logarithmic function. The mean ROM was the greatest at the L5-S1 level under flexion (7.37+/-3.69 degrees) and extension (4.62+/-2.56 degrees) and at the L3-L4 level under lateral bending (4.04+/-1.11 degrees). The mean ROM was the least at the L1-L2 level under flexion (2.42+/-0.90 degrees), L2-L3 level under extension (1.58+/-0.63 degrees), and L1-L2 level under lateral bending (2.50+/-0.75 degrees). The present study proved the hypothesis that L5-S1 motions are significantly greater than L1-L5 motions under flexion and extension loadings, but the hypothesis was found to be untrue under the lateral bending mode. These experimental data are useful in the improved validation of FE models, which will increase the confidence of stress analysis and other modeling applications.

We studied the association of serum phosphate and calcium concentrations, and surrogate measures of arterial stiffness (augmentation index: AIx and Timing of the reflected wave: Tr), with long-term kidney transplant recipient and allograft survival. Prevalent adult renal transplant patients (n = 270) were prospectively studied over a median 88-month follow-up. Detailed demographic, clinical and laboratory data, in addition to both peripheral and central non-invasive blood pressure measurements, were recorded. AIx and Tr were not associated with mortality or graft loss on multivariable analysis. This is the first report to demonstrate that both higher serum phosphate and calcium levels are associated with increased mortality in kidney transplant recipients. It highlights the need for randomized trials assessing current interventions available for improving disordered mineral-bone metabolism post transplantation.

Delayed graft function (DGF) following renal transplantation, conventionally defined as requireme... more Delayed graft function (DGF) following renal transplantation, conventionally defined as requirement for dialysis during the first postoperative week, is associated with inferior long-term outcomes, particularly when acute rejection (AR) is superimposed (1-7). Indeed, one study suggested that inferior outcomes seen with prolonged dialysis dependency were largely because of superimposed ''silent'' AR (8). Despite this, there is little information regarding factors associated with AR in patients experiencing DGF. Limited data which do exist suggest that lymphocyte-depleting antibody induction protects against, and anti-human leucocyte antigen antibody sensitization promotes, AR in patients with DGF (9-11). This study aimed to further identify risk factors for AR in patients experiencing DGF in a cyclosporine-based protocol. Patients and methods Between 2003 and 2006, 257 patients received deceased donor renal transplants under cyclosporine-based immunosuppression at our institution. Of these, 10 (3.8%) experienced early technical failure. A further 92 (35.8%) required dialysis during the first week post-transplantation. The median duration of dialysis was 8.0 d (interquartile range 5.0-13.0 d). The duration of dialysis equalled or exceeded five d in 71 patients and these patients underwent allograft biopsy to exclude superimposed acute rejection. The primary objective of this project was to develop a test for measuring the bond strength betwe... more The primary objective of this project was to develop a test for measuring the bond strength between pavement layers. The research was also to evaluate tack coat materials and application rates for the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). The project included a laboratory phase and a field phase. For the laboratory work, the experiment included two types of emulsion (CRS-2 and CSS-1) and a PG 64-22 asphalt binder that are allowed by ALDOT's specifications. Bond strengths were measured with a shear type device at three temperatures and three normal pressure levels. Three application rates that encompassed the specification range were investigated for each tack coat. Laboratory prepared mixture samples included a coarse-graded blend and a fine-graded blend to represent two different surface textures. The effects of tack coat type, application rate, mixture type, testing temperature and normal pressure on the bond strength were evaluated.

A review of published genetic studies using ADNI multimodality quantitative phenotypes: MRI, PET, fluid biomarkers, cognition and clinical status

All subjects underwent neuropsychological evaluation, lumbar puncture and MRS. Commercial ELISA kits were used to determine levels of Abeta42, Tau, P-Tau (Innotest, Innogenetics) and YKL-40 (MicroVue, Quidel). We measured myoinositol (mI), N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and choline (Cho) and their ratios to creatine (Cr) in MRS through the LC-model. Group comparisons (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation coefficients were determined between different biomarkers. Results: There were no significant correlations between CSF YKL-40 levels and the mI/Cr ratio. YKL-40 showed a positive correlation with Tau (r¼0.582, p<0.001) and P-Tau (r¼0.687, p<0.001), and a negative correlation with NAA/Cr (r¼-0.387, p¼0.020), similarly to Tau (r¼-0.464, p¼0.004) and P-Tau (r¼-0.440, p¼0.007). There were no correlations between mI/Cr ratio (or Cho/Cr) and any of the CSF biomarkers.The GDS3 group showed significantly higher levels of Tau, P-Tau and YKL-40, and lower NAA/Cr values than GDS1 or GDS2. Despite a tendency to lower Abeta42 levels in the GDS3 group compared to the other two groups these differences were not statistically significant. Conclusions: Although YKL-40 and mI have been reported to track inflammation-related events, they might measure different steps of the process. Due to small sample size this cohort might be underpowered to detect differences in MRS mI, reported to be an early marker of the inflammation process in preclinical stages.YKL-40, similarly to Tau and P-Tau, shows a negative correlation with NAA/Cr and increases in stages when symptoms have already started. Therefore, it might be a marker of a later step in the process and probably also involved in neuronal death.
