An elderberry-supplemented diet improves spermatogenesis in mice with busulfan-induced azoospermia

Context Approximately 40–50% of all infertility cases are due to male infertility, and one of the... more Context Approximately 40–50% of all infertility cases are due to male infertility, and one of the most important causes of infertility is azoospermia. Aims This study aimed to evaluate the potential effect of elderberry on the spermatogenesis process in the azoospermia mice model. Method Thirty adult male mice were randomised into three groups: control; busulfan (45 mg/kg); and busulfan + elderberry (2%), 6 mL orally per animal. Sperm samples were collected from the tail of the epididymis, and testis specimens were also collected and then subjected to sperm parameters analysis, histopathological evaluation, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and glutathione (GSH) measurement to determine the mRNA expression and hormonal assay. Conclusions It can be concluded that the elderberry diet may be considered a complementary treatment to improve the spermatogenesis process in busulfan-induced azoospermic mice. The novel coronavirus that swept the world into a pandemic in 2019 has affected many aspects of h... more The novel coronavirus that swept the world into a pandemic in 2019 has affected many aspects of health care. COVID-19 has infected about 263 million people across the globe and led to the death of 5.2 million people. Its impact on various organs is still vague and requires further research. The increase in hospital visits and administrations has accordingly increased exposure and risk of obtaining the coronavirus. Patients previously hospitalized and being treated with immunosuppressants tend to be very susceptible to serious respiratory infections from the novel virus. Amongst the diseases that require hospitalization are ulcerative colitis and appendicitis. Hospitalization from such diseases inevitably increases the risk and exposure to COVID-19 infection. This study analyzed the management and procedures taken in patients with inflammatory bowel disease and appendicitis during the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, the effects of the pandemic on the pediatric ward and admitted children were also discussed and compared.

ABSTRACT: Somatic embryogenesis is one of the most common and effectual method for in vitro regen... more ABSTRACT: Somatic embryogenesis is one of the most common and effectual method for in vitro regeneration of date palms. In this study, production of embryogenesis callus in Medjool cultivar on high concentrations of 2,4-D (10, 30, 50, and 70 mg/l) with 2ip (0 and 3 mg/l) were examined. In the absence of 2ip hormone and the treatment with 70mg/l 2,4-D hormone, we witnessed the highest embryogenesis callus production of (2.68g) and production of embryogenesis calluses of about 2.57g when we used 3mg 2ip hormone with 50mg 2,4-D, accounted as the second order of production. Moreover, as we aimed at producing somatic embryos, embryogenesis calluses were exposed to two concentrations of 30 and 60mg/l sucrose and three different concentrations of MS salts, by which it was determined that the higher concentration of sucrose was applied, the more the number of embryos were produced. It was also revealed that for producing somatic embryos, 1/2MS and 3/4MS were more efficient than absolute MS.
