This study presents a digital architectural design tool named "Fuzzy Layout Planner" that helps a... more This study presents a digital architectural design tool named "Fuzzy Layout Planner" that helps architects create two dimensional sketchy footprints for their design. The purpose of the tool is to extend limits of early design thinking. It uses fuzzy modeling techniques to adapt the ambiguous design phase. There are several commands in this digital tool to generate and modify layouts. Users can create, move, combine sketchy bubbles to form bigger footprints and see them in action dynamically. The tool offers a manual creation process.

This article reports results of a study on reducing commute times in Istanbul, Turkey with specia... more This article reports results of a study on reducing commute times in Istanbul, Turkey with special reference to university students. In order to reduce commute times in cities with high population density, this study proposes a mutual home exchange model for university students. The proposed model searches for suitable matches that can reduce commute times for residents in the case that they want to exchange their houses. A new matching algorithm has been designed in the context of this study. Agent-based approach has been preferred to define and solve home exchange problem and each home location is considered as an agent. Furthermore, two main one-sided matching algorithms, which are Irving’s Stable Roommate matching algorithm and Gale’s Top Trading Cycles matching algorithm, have been implemented for the home exchange problem. The proposed algorithm and two matching algorithms have been applied on a virtual data. The results of home exchange matching algorithms are presented.

With the development in computer applications it has become possible to solve design problems which were not possible to handle before. Computer environment which has become an interface rather than a tool for design has also led to the emergence of a number of concepts. New concepts such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) are being involved in design process. With the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) , AI has earned an interdisciplinary position. Agent based systems which are contained in the fields of AI have become the subjects of many researches in design basis. Approach to the problem solving process in the process of architectural/design problems is to be addressed as an important point within the scope of evaluation process. In this context user movements have a very critical role in process of problem solving according to the design problems. While designing or solving a design problem , ignoring the user movements can lead to unwanted results. Within the scope of this study user movements in city are considered in the context of emerging urban part/particles as a preliminary study.

Which factors affect the communication and the quality of interaction? The study is based on two phases: the data input by the designer via devices to the computer environment and the transformation of data into design product in the software by scripting addition. Input devices that are used are 3D mouse, graphic tablet as a tangible interface and implementation of second mouse besides a standard mouse and keyboard. The potential usage of these interfaces in collaborative architectural design process is discussed and proposals are developed in 3ds max scripting environment.

This paper introduces an ongoing research project addressing multi-dimensional and relational com... more This paper introduces an ongoing research project addressing multi-dimensional and relational complexity of urban features by applying data mining as a methodology of knowledge discovery in urban feature analysis. A methodology is developed for formulation and analysis of an urban database by the complementary application of GIS (Geographical Information Systems) and data mining techniques in order to identify patterns and relationships among multiple urban attributes. The urban database is built upon real and official data of Beyoglu, a historical neighborhood of Istanbul. The paper also includes a specific application of knowledge discovery methodology into Beyoglu urban feature database.
