Ideally, the content presented should be adjusted to the department, which is referred to as ESP (English for Specific Purpose). Perceptions from several parties are needed to find out how important English is for a career as a nurse and the right material according to their needs. This research aimed to analyze the students' needs on English for Specific Purposes materials, particularly at the Nursing department, University of Muhammadiyah Ponorogo. The researcher used questionnaire as the research instrument. The subject were the sixth semester students of Muhammadiyah Ponorogo Nursing Academy in the academic year 2018/2019 with the total number of 90 students in three classes. The researchers decided to take only 20% of the total students, namely 15 students for all classes. The results of this study indicate that in general, respondents believe that English is very important to be taught in the Nursing Department. Metacognitive awareness is a cognitive evaluation of students' impressions of themselves during l... more Metacognitive awareness is a cognitive evaluation of students' impressions of themselves during listening activities in the form of their comprehension, goals, and strategies to enhance listening abilities. The purpose of this study was to discover what metacognitive awareness strategies students frequently use in their listening performances. The subject in this study was the students of the 4th semester of English Department, Muhammadiyah University of Ponorogo, who took the Listening for authentic materials course. The study used quantitative correlational research design with the data collected from questionnaire which adopted and elaborated from Vandergrift et al. The respondent who filled out the questionnaire was 10 of the 15 existing students. The results showed that students' metacognitive awareness in listening strategies were classified into: problem solving (4.67), directed attention (4.13), planning / evaluation (4.10), mental translation (4.03), and person knowledge (3.60). It indicated that most English Department students used problem solving as their listening strategy. It also showed that students frequently use their understanding about the context rather than translating word for word in their heads; comparing the impact of their listening efforts; sustaining concentration and remaining focused on listening.

Learning a foreign language needs a big effort from the learner itself to make their language abi... more Learning a foreign language needs a big effort from the learner itself to make their language ability grows better day by day. Among those, they also need a support from all around them including teacher, friends, as well as activities which support them to speak the language. When those activities developed well as a habit which are done regularly, it will help improving the students' language competence. It was a qualitative research which aimed to find out and describe some activities implemented in Pesantren Al Mawaddah, Ponorogo, in order to teach the students a foreign language. In collecting the data, the researcher used interview, questionnaire, and documentation. From the study, it was found that Pesantren Al Mawaddah had successfully built the language habit on the students to speak the target language. More than 15 hours a day students were compelled to speak foreign language, Arabic or English, in turn. It aimed to habituate the students to keep in touch with the target language. The habit was developed through daily language activities, such as dawn vocabs giving, dictionary handling, daily language use, speech training and language intensive course, daily language input, and night vocabs memorizing. That habit then developed the students awareness towards the language learned as well as promoted their language mastery.

The research design used in this reasearch was experimental research which consisted of two groups, experimental and control group. The sample of this research were X IPA1 as the experimental group which consisted of 32 students and X IPA2 as the control group which consisted of 30 students. The experimental group was taught by using basic questioning with picture while the control group was not taught by using basic questioning with picture, it was taught as usual or lecturing only. The instrument used to collect data was test. The test was writing test which was given in pre test and post test both two groups. The assessment of the result of writing test was focused on the five elements of writing (content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanic). The technique to analyze the data used t-test formula.Two groups were compared. The result of statistical hypothesis on significance α=0.05 showed t test (2.91) was higher than t table (2.00). It means that, there was significant difference between the students who were taught by using basic questioning with picture and the students who were not taught by using basic questioning with picture in teaching writing. From the explanation above, it can be concluded that the use of basic questioning with picture is effective in teaching writing of the tenth year students

In this curriculum, students demanded to be active and creative during learning process. Thus, teacher also needs to be creative in arranging the teaching and learning process. This research aims at finding out (1) the teachers' implementation of 2012 curriculum in English teaching process; (2) the teachers' and students roles in English teaching and learning; and (3) the impact of 2013 curriculum in English teaching and learning. This research design was descriptive qualitative research. The researcher used qualitative observation and interview as the data collection technique. The subject were three English teachers of SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. The activity in analyzing data were reduction, display, and conclusion drawing or verification. The findings of the research showed that the implementation of 2013 curriculum in English teaching process did not completely successful. It showed from the data findings, there were positive and negative impact of the 2013 curriculum implementation in English teaching process at SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Ponorogo. The creativity of English teacher in arranging learning activities will create a good learning situation and increase the students understanding towards the learning material.
It is believed that rural education has unique challenges compared to urban and suburban areas, p... more It is believed that rural education has unique challenges compared to urban and suburban areas, particularly in Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL). Problems that often occur are related to educational inequality for those who live in rural areas, such as unqualified teachers, limited educational facilities, or lack of parental support. This study aims to identify the challenges faced by English teachers and their strategies in teaching English to young students in rural areas. This qualitative research used direct observation in the classroom and interviews with the English teacher at an elementary school in Ponorogo. The findings showed that (1) learning English in remote areas was constrained by the status of English as a local content that created less supportive conditions for teachers to teach English; (2) most of the teachers came from non-English educational backgrounds, which affected their competence; (3) the learning curriculum was not in accordance with the existing learning conditions; and (4) the socioeconomic status of parents had a significant effect on students' motivation and achievement in learning English. Therefore, English teachers in rural areas need to use various strategies to address the mentioned problems.

Pembiasaan ini searah dengan model pembelajaran bahasa asing, yaitu pembelajaran yang membentuk kebiasaan untuk selalu menggunakan bahasa asing dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, sehingga tanpa disadari bahasa tersebut menjadi habit dan selanjutnya akan mengkristal menjadi karakter. Maka Idealnya seorang mahasiswa dan lulusan pendidikan bahasa asing dapat berbahasa asing dengan lancar. Sayangnya, hal yang demikian tidaklah mudah bagi program studi bahasa asing, seringkali mahasiswa dan lulusan masih merasa kesulitan untuk berbicara dan berkomunkasi menggunakan bahasa target.
