Th... more Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) powder is widely used as a spice and seasoning in Asian countries. This study investigated the effect of turmeric extracts on the anticancer activity of Huh7 and HCT 116 cells. The curcumin bioactive compounds were extracted using various methods such as microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and traditional extraction (TDE). The yield of dried extracts from MAE was found to be the highest at 17.89%, followed by UAE and TDE, with 11.34% and 5.54%, respectively. Antioxidant activities such as TPC, DPPH and FRAP from MAE were higher than those of UAE and TDE. The total curcuminoid contents from the novel extractions were higher than those from traditional extraction methods. For instance, curcuminoid contents from MAE, UAE and TDE were 326.79, 241.17 and 215.83 mg/g, respectively. Increasing numbers of diabetic patients, especially those with type II, can link their condition ... more Increasing numbers of diabetic patients, especially those with type II, can link their condition to changes in eating habits. Black rice and red rice are not only a source of carbohydrate but also rich sources of antioxidants, especially proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins. This study determines the effect consuming a black rice extract (BRE) or a red rice extract (RRE) on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Blood levels of glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol in the diabetic group were determined and compared to that of the control group. The results demonstrate that consumption of BRE, 50 mg/kg body weight (BW), or RRE, 100 mg/kg BW, could significantly reduce the blood glucose level of the diabetic rats after eight weeks. Consumption of BRE, 100 mg/kg BW or RRE, 50 mg/kg BW, also clearly decreased the triglyceride level. The cholesterol level in the diabetic group fed with BRE or RRE decreased as well. Thus daily consumption of black rice, red rice, or having their extracts in food supplements may prevent the onset of diabetes.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), from the bacterial membrane, is a vital mediator of this event through binding with a Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and activating through NF-κB in CRC. To identify a novel inhibitor of LPS-induced colon cancer cells (SW480), green coffee bean extract (GBE) was investigated. Ethyl acetate insoluble fraction (EIF) was mainly collected from GBE and classified as chlorogenic acid (CGA)-rich fractions. EIF and CGA inhibited TLR4 expression in LPS-induced SW480 cells. However, EIF was more dominant than CGA, via inhibition of expression and secretion of several associated mediators in inflammatory responses and CRC metastasis through NF-κB inactivation, which resulted in the abrogation of CRC migration and invasion. Therefore, udder inflammation might be related to the quantity of lipid peroxidation in milk. The goal of this study was to identify the relationship between milk somatic cell count (SCC), a marker for inflammatory udder, and malondialdehyde concentration (MDA), a lipid peroxidation marker, in raw cow's milk. Milk samples were collected monthly from each cow in smallholder farms, Mae-On sub-district, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand, from October through December 2004. These samples were used to measure SCC and MDA. To normalize data, SCC values were transformed to somatic cell score (SCS). The data of 161 milk samples of 87 cows from eight farms were used to identify the relationship between SCS and MDA. Statistical analysis showed that SCS was positively related to MDA concentration (Po0:01).

The goals of this study were to identify associations of malondialdehyde (MDA) with milk composit... more The goals of this study were to identify associations of malondialdehyde (MDA) with milk compositions and somatic cell counts (SCC) in milk from bulk tanks. Milk samples were collected from smallholder dairy farms (n = 133) belonging to the Mae-On dairy cooperative, Chiang Mai Province, Thailand. After routine testing for bulk tank SCC (BMSCC), milk samples were tested for milk compositions and milk MDA, respectively. To normalize the BMSCC data, they were transformed to scores of BMSCC. Results from Pearson's correlation coefficients showed that any pairs of BMSCC, milk fat, milk protein, and milk lactose were associated to each others (P<0.05). However, milk MDA was significantly associated only with BMSCC. In conclusion, milk malondialdehyde is associated only with somatic cell counts.

This study aimed to investigate the chemoprotective action of PF seed residue crude ethanolic extract (PCE) on the inflammatory-induced promotion stage of rat colon carcinogenesis and cell culture models. PCE 0.1 and 1 g/kg body weight were administered by oral gavage to rats after receiving dimethylhydrazine (DMH) with one week of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) supplementation. PCE at high dose exhibited a reduction in aberrant crypt foci (ACF) number (66.46%) and decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines compared to the DMH + DSS group (p < 0.01). Additionally, PCE could either modulate the inflammation induced in murine macrophage cells by bacterial toxins or suppress the proliferation of cancer cell lines, which was induced by the inflammatory process. The present study aimed to determine the preventive action of Ficus dubia latex extract (FDLE) on 1,2-dimethylhydrazine (DMH) -induced rat colorectal carcinogenesis and its mechanisms. The experiment included an initiation model in which rats were orally administered with FDLE daily for one week before DMH injection until the end of the experiment, while only after DMH injection until the end in the post-initiation model. The results firstly indicated that FDLE treatment could reduce the level of methylazoxymethanol (MAM) in rat colonic lumen by inhibition of the activities of both phase I xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes in the liver and β-glucuronidase in the colon, leading to reduced DNA methylation in colonic mucosal cells, related to the number of ACF in the initiation stage. The present study aims to compare the anti-tumor activity of Ficus dubia latex extract (FDLE) against HCT-116 and HT-29 human colorectal cancer cell lines in normal and inflammatory condition and explore its mechanism of action. FDLE exhibited remarkable antiproliferative activity against HCT-116 and HT-29 colorectal cancer cell lines in both conditions using MTT and colony formation assays and more effective anti-proliferation was observed in inflammatory condition. Roasting temperature and time varied between 100–300 °C and 60–240 s in green tea production. The main interactions measured were effects on the antioxidant activities, total phenolic content, DPPH, ABTS, FRAP and catechin content (catechin (C), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG) and epicatechin (EC)). Optimum roasting conditions were determined as 270 °C for 240 s, since this enabled high catechin contents, antioxidant activities and production yield. HCT suppressed cell proliferation and stimulated apoptosis via inactivation of AKT/ERK/MAPK in both androgen-sensitive prostate cancer and CRPC cell lines. HCT also inhibited cell migration and EMT phenotypes through the STAT3/Snail/Twist pathway. One of the active compounds of HCT was identified as rutin. (C. asiatica) extract has been shown to possess high antioxidant activity due to its phenols and flavonoids. This study tested the efficacy of 70%-ethanol (EtOH) crude extracts of C. asiatica and its fractions (H 2 O, EtOAc, CH 2 Cl 2 , and hexane) to modulate human follicle dermal papilla cells. In addition, we analyzed the extracts for major phytochemicals as well as free radical scavenging activity. Our results from ABTS and DPPH assays showed that the amounts of phenolic and flavonoid compounds in the extracts were both related to its free radical scavenging activity. While the EtOAc fraction of C. asiatica demonstrated the highest free radical scavenging activity, it was toxic to human follicle dermal papilla cells. The cell viability test was positive when cells were treated with EtOH crude extract and H 2 O fraction. VEGF gene expression, quantified by real-time PCR analysis of the EtOH crude extract, showed a significant level of induction, indicating that the growth promotion effect in human follicle dermal papilla cells was related to VEGF gene expression, which has a positive hair growth stimulating effect. The EtOH crude extract of C. asiatica may offer potential in hair growth promoting products.
