Possible Applicability of Nikos Salingaros' 'Parameters' for Architectural Analysis

These aspects can be applied to architecture of any style and period for assessment of structural harmony and aesthetic appeal. This paper picks out these aspects and classifies them as 'Parameters' for convenient use to analyze buildings. To assess a typical Hindu temple architecture's compliance with fractal geometry and hence aesthetic appeal with psychological comfort, these parameters may be used for analysis of a temple structure. The illustrations used to visualize these parameters are from the Laxman Temple, Khajuraho, India

When the shapes and patterns used to create art, starts to acquire meaning contextually, it transcends into 'symbolism'. Therefore art contributes in the overall understanding of the structure and ambience. Also, shape evolving into patterns is, more often than not, an algorithmic process. These patterns in consideration are characterised to be fractal in nature. Therefore a logical connection can be made between patterns and their meanings, that is, fractals and symbolism. In Hindu religious architecture, the shapes have a set of meanings, their combinations have certain meanings, and the patterns evolved from them have, either a higher metaphorical meaning or a totally new interpretation. In this paper, symbolic art has been considered in the context of Hindu religious architecture and attempts to link the independent disciplines of 'symbolism' and...

This became possible by following fractal geometry. Fractal geometry plays a major part in the transmission of the symbolic intended meanings from the visibly manifested art and architecture of the temple, to the intellect of human beings, for perception in the correct sense. This paper is therefore an attempt to integrate and analyse the fields of study of, temple architecture, fractal geometry, symbolism, human perception of architectural expression, and temple concept through cosmology and philosophy. It is advocated that the use of fractal geometry in the construction of temples, and sculptures adorning them, helps in imparting the temple concept and idea in its correct value.
