Upper limits of a few emitted neutrons per 1000 stopped muons or pions were observed. Our sun emits 380 yottawatt, yet the nuclear reactant energies producing that power are very low ... more Our sun emits 380 yottawatt, yet the nuclear reactant energies producing that power are very low (1 keV). These energies are so low, that replication of such reactions in the laboratory produce rates that are nearly impossible to detect. Unlike the historical efforts to understand stellar processes by extrapolating down from higher energy beam experiments, there are efforts to study reactions using low energy reactants. To do so requires specialized equipment and environments. The results indicate the need to understand the Coulomb screening effects of condensed matter in these processes. An explanation for heat production in planetary cores may also follow.

Active Thermitic Material Discovered in Dust from the 9/11 World Trade Center Catastrophe

We have discovered distinctive red/gray chips in all the samples we have studied of the dust prod... more We have discovered distinctive red/gray chips in all the samples we have studied of the dust produced by the destruction of the World Trade Center. Examination of four of these samples, collected from separate sites, is reported in this paper. These red/gray chips show marked similarities in all four samples. One sample was collected by a Manhattan resident about ten minutes after the collapse of the second WTC Tower, two the next day, and a fourth about a week later. The properties of these chips were analyzed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (XEDS), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The red material contains grains approximately 100 nm across which are largely iron oxide, while aluminum is contained in tiny plate-like structures. Separation of components using methyl ethyl ketone demonstrated that elemental aluminum is present. The iron oxide and aluminum are intimately mixed in the red material. When ignited in a DSC device the chips exhibit large but narrow exotherms occurring at approximately 430 ˚C, far below the normal ignition temperature for conventional thermite. Numerous iron-rich spheres are clearly observed in the residue following the ignition of these peculiar red/gray chips. The red portion of these chips is found to be an unreacted thermitic material and highly energetic.

Investigators monitoring air quality at the World Trade Center, after the September 11th attacks,... more Investigators monitoring air quality at the World Trade Center, after the September 11th attacks, found extremely high levels of volatile organic chemicals as well as unusual species that had never been seen before in structure fires. Data collected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency indicate striking spikes in levels of benzene, styrene, and several other products of combustion. These spikes occurred on specific dates in October and November 2001, and February 2002. Additionally, data collected by researchers at the University of California Davis showed similar spikes in the levels of sulfur and silicon compounds, and certain metals, in aerosols. To better explain these data, as well as the unusual detection of 1,3-diphenylpropane, the presence of energetic nanocomposites in the pile at Ground Zero is hypothesized.

The rate of decay of ionized ^7Be is involved in two interesting geophysical problems. The first ... more The rate of decay of ionized ^7Be is involved in two interesting geophysical problems. The first is the excessive abundance of ^7Be found in the upper atmosphere by the LDEF (Long Duration Exposure Facility) satellite. (Science, 252), 493 (1991). The second is that the decay of ^7Be is a critical question in the solar cycle that produces the measured solar neutrino flux. An important feature of ^7Be is that it decays solely by electron capture and the decay rate can be changed by modifying the electron density near the nucleus. It has been found that a 2% variation in the decay rate can be achieved through the electronic structure changes caused by chemical bonding.(Phys. Rev., 76), 897 (1949).^,(Phys. Rev. C, 2), 5 (1970). Unfortunately, there have been no measurements of the decay rate as a function of ionization state of this material and estimates of the decay rate in the ionosphere or in the solar core depend entirely on theoretical calculations.
