In the past, the researchers focused mainly on the heart disease of men and women were largely neglected. And to add insult to injury, they have been treated for decades with the protocols developed for men based on the research with men. Some critical sex differences in heart disease necessitate different protocols for women due to their unique risk factors. Some pertinent sex differences related to heart disease are delineated in this article. Importance of raising awareness about women's heart disease for the general public and specifically for women is stressed. Understanding the critical sex differences with regard to heart disease would allow for better prevention and management programs of heart disease in women. Experimental EFFECTS OF REIKI ON PAIN AND SELECTED AFFECTIVE AND PERSONALITY VARIABLES OF CHRONICALLY ILL PATIENTS

This experiment examined the effects of Reiki (a laying-of-on-hands healing modality) on pain, mo... more This experiment examined the effects of Reiki (a laying-of-on-hands healing modality) on pain, mood, personality, and faith in God. Participants (N 120) were randomly assigned to one of the four groups (ns = 30). The Reiki Group received ten sessions of Reiki. Progressive Muscle Relaxation Group received ten sessions of relaxation therapy. Control Group received no treatment. Placebo Group received ten sessions of false-Reiki. Statistical analysis led to the following conclusions: (1) Reiki is an effective modality for reducing pain, depression, and anxiety. (2) Reiki is effective in enhancing desirable changes in personality and strengthening the faith in God. (3) Gains made by Reiki tend to persist over longer periods of dme. (4) Attunement seems to be a viral part in Reiki training. (5) Chronically ill patients experiencing stress and pain tend to be receptive to Reiki.

Perceived Stigmatization among Younger and Older American Adults with Type 1 Diabetes

Although there is a plethora of studies dealing with health-related stigma of many diseases, Type... more Although there is a plethora of studies dealing with health-related stigma of many diseases, Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) has been neglected in this respect. The purpose of the present exploratory study was to devise a preliminary scale to measure the health-related stigma and compare younger and older individuals with T1D with regard to the length of time since diagnosis. A 12-item Type 1 Diabetes Stigma Scale (T1DSS-12) was created and used with 61 college students enrolled in an American university. All of these students were diagnosed with T1D and were members of the university chapter of the College Diabetes Network. The T1DSS-12 included questions about perceived health-related stigma and psychosocial effects of T1D. Perceived health-related stigma was found to be frequent among the participants of the current study. Three hundred and five firstand second-year undergraduate students from an American regional southwestern university were administered the Demographic Questionnaire, Nutritional Intake Questionnaire (NIQ), and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Of these 305 undergraduates, 116 met the research criteria for the study (18 26 years of age, middle-upper classes, not under treatment for depression or any other psychological disorder; not having any food restrictions, falling in the healthy/poor nutritional intake categories). Left-Handedness and Artistic Abilities: A First Look

A sample of healthy18 undergraduate college women (9 left-handers and 9 right-handers) without an... more A sample of healthy18 undergraduate college women (9 left-handers and 9 right-handers) without any learning disabilities enrolled at a regional southwestern university in the United States signed an informed consent form, and were administered a general information questionnaire and the Artistic Abilities subscale of "Competencies" subsection of the Holland's Self-Directed Search, Form R. They also signed an informed consent form. Because of the conflicting findings in research on handedness and on artistic abilities, the variable of sex was held constant in this study. Thus, left-and right-handed women were compared on the following variables: prevalence of lefthandedness in the family, academic performance, and artistic abilities. Significant differences were found between left-and right-handers on all variables except academic performance. Following conclusions were made on the basis of the results of this preliminary study: (1) left-handers tend to be more artistic than the right-handers and (2) heredity is one of the several determinants of handedness. Expectancy effect, brain lateralization, and functional theory were suggested as possible explanations for the link between left-handedness and artistic abilities.

This was an exploratory study (with an extensive literature review) using the Photosensitive Asse... more This was an exploratory study (with an extensive literature review) using the Photosensitive Assessment (PA) method designed for Brief Strobic Photostimularion. Colored srrobic light was used to conduct PA of 15 extroverted/ depressed (ED), 15 introverted/depressed (ID), 15 extroverted/non-depressed (EN), and 15 introverted/non-depressed (IN) individuals. These groups were compared on the basis of their preferences for 11 colors. Significant results were found for colors ruby, yellow, yellow/green, green, red/orange, and blue. Depressed participants tended to avoid the color ruby more than the non-depressed participants. Extroverts preferred the colors yellow, yellow/green, and green more than did introverts. Red/orange was preferred more by the EN subgroup than by the ED subgroup. Blue was preferred more by the EN subgroup than the IN subgroup, and by the ID subgroup than the IN subgroup.

In recent years, its popularity has increased and as a biofield or energy therapy it is being used as a complementary modality with the conventional medical care in a variety of settings. Reiki is a Japanese term meaning universal life force which is believed to flow from the hands of a practitioner to a willing recipient's body facilitating physical, emotional, or spiritual healing depending on the needs of the recipient. This article provides a comprehensive review of the information available about Reiki in the areas of its history and development, nature of training and treatment protocol, practice ethics, empirical research and challenges for the researchers, guidelines for future research, and current applications. There is a vast amount of anecdotal, published, unpublished, and Internet information available on the subject of Reiki and its use as a healing modality with discrepancies among many sources. This article attempts to sort out and present only that information which is accepted by majority of the Reiki practitioners and as such is an informative reading for all health practitioners.

Therapists' Self-Reported Training and Success Rates in Treating Clients with Childhood Sexual Abuse

In this two-part study, three groups of therapists (16 psychologists, 11 counselors, and 14 socia... more In this two-part study, three groups of therapists (16 psychologists, 11 counselors, and 14 social workers) were compared with regard to their success rates with clients presenting with childhood sexual abuse, and 43 graduate programs were asked whether they offered courses covering counseling techniques with such clients. Therapists' self-reported success rates were not significantly related to therapists' training, but type of therapy was. Given a response rate of 18.6%, self-reports should be treated cautiously. Over two-thirds of the training programs (45% response rate) offered courses covering issues in childhood sexual abuse and 67% offered courses covering counseling techniques with such clients. However, in 85% of these courses, treatment of childhood sexual abuse was a topic covered under more general course headings.
