This document provides a detailed overview of the Radio Link concepts being developed in METIS as... more This document provides a detailed overview of the Radio Link concepts being developed in METIS as well as a detailed analysis of the related state of the art. For each of the research topics identified for the radio link research covering flexible air interface, new waveforms, modulation and coding techniques as well as multiple access, medium access control and enablers for radio resource management, a detailed description of the aspects to be investigated will be given, going beyond the limits imposed by the systems operated today and their planned evolutions. The state of the art analysis, which is conducted for each of the research topics separately, covers current standards, their future evolutions as well as latest academic research. Elaborating on how the approaches followed in the radio link research may advance this state of the art carves a promising track towards innovative solutions addressing the challenges of future wireless communication.

It provides a comprehensive and self-contained summary of all investigated technology components (TeCs), including evaluation results and conclusions on their potential for 5G. The METIS radio link research covers three main areas, which are considered key aspects for developing a self-contained air interface design for 5G: 1) Flexible air interface, 2) Waveforms, coding & modulation and transceiver design and 3) Multiple access, Medium Access Control (MAC) and Radio Resource Management (RRM). According to the invention, such a method implements, for at least one first bit sequence of said source signal, a pre-filter to focus at least one of said receiving antennas, said target antenna, a signal to be transmitted, said target antenna and said pre-filter associated focusing, being selected depending a value of said first bit sequence to be considered as received, and a step of transmitting said pre-filtered signal.

Within a competitive context the wireless local loop is emerging as an alternative to the traditi... more Within a competitive context the wireless local loop is emerging as an alternative to the traditional wireline network. This solution is attractive because of its low capital cost and its flexible deployment. Nevertheless a propagation channel study has to be performed so as to develop specific engineering tools and propagation models. This paper presents wideband propagation measurement results carried out in Mulhouse in a small cell environment at 2.2 GHz and 3.5 GHz, Under different propagation scenarios, the propagation channel is characterised in terms of path loss and wideband selectivity parameters. Because of the experimental setting, the influence of the receiving height, the frequency and the receiving antenna pattern on the deviations of the path loss and the selectivit 3" parameters have been investigated.

Triggered by the explosion of mobile traffic, 5G (5th Generation) cellular network requires evolu... more Triggered by the explosion of mobile traffic, 5G (5th Generation) cellular network requires evolution to increase the system rate 1000 times higher than the current systems in 10 years. Motivated by this common problem, there are several studies to integrate mm-wave access into current cellular networks as multi-band heterogeneous networks to exploit the ultra-wideband aspect of the mm-wave band. The authors of this paper have proposed comprehensive architecture of cellular networks with mm-wave access, where mm-wave small cell basestations and a conventional macro basestation are connected to Centralized-RAN (C-RAN) to effectively operate the system by enabling power efficient seamless handover as well as centralized resource control including dynamic cell structuring to match the limited coverage of mm-wave access with high traffic user locations via user-plane/control-plane splitting. Excellent progress has been made in the operation of the BNL Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS), whi... more Excellent progress has been made in the operation of the BNL Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS), which is a prototype for an EBIS that could meet requirements for a RHIC preinjector. We have achieved very stable operation of the electron beam at 10 A through the EBIS trap. Ion injection of low charge gold ions from a LEVA [1] ion source and subsequent extraction of these ions with most probable charge state AU34+has been demonstrated with electron beams up to 8A. The total ion charge for gold measured on current transformer at the EBIS exit was 55nC after a 3Oms confinement period. This corresponds to-85°/0 of the theoretical ion trap capacity and exceeds our goal of 50'?40 neutralization. The collected ion charge is proportional to the electron current and the gold charge state scales with the electron current density. Adaptive and Spatial Processing for Millimeter Wave Backhaul Architectures

This paper presents advanced spatial focusing algorithms and their performance covering fixed and... more This paper presents advanced spatial focusing algorithms and their performance covering fixed and mobile hotspots (HS) for backhaul within the context of millimeter wave (mmWave) overlay networks. For Fixed HS (FHS), Time Reversal (TR) and Equal Gain Transmission (EGT) techniques are recommended and optimized under Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) deployments within the context of Wi-Fi HS extensions operating at 60 GHz. For Mobile HS (MHS) scenarios, adaptive and switching beamforming (BF) techniques are investigated and evaluated to track HS combining Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) and mmWave transmissions using the IEEE802.11ad and IEEE802.15.3c standards. Link budget are performed for those scenarios, proving feasibility of mmWave and Wi-Fi backhauling for future fifth generation (5G) networks.

This paper describes a pragmatic approach on the upconversion of WiMedia compliant UWB signals in... more This paper describes a pragmatic approach on the upconversion of WiMedia compliant UWB signals into the 60 GHz band. This dual band concept is based on propagation measurements at {3.1-10.6} and 60 GHz. UWB systems operating in the 3.1 to 10.6 GHz bands are both bandwidth limited and power limited. Therefore, many potential users hesitate to deploy this technology. Up-conversion to the 60 GHz band and enhanced baseband parameters make UWB technology more reliable and hence, more attractive. An experimental system based on a commercially available UWB development kit and IHPs 60 GHz chip-set has been developed. The system architecture is described. Measurement results indicate that this combinationn may be interesting for many applications.
