The exchange of cyanide by 4-cyanopyridine (4-CNpy) in hexacyanoferrate(II) was found to be catalyzed by both the catalysts under similar reaction conditions, and therefore used for the comparison. The effects of several experimental parameters on the substitution were studied at 477 nm; these include concentrations of ligand, complex, and catalysts, pH, ionic strength and temperature. The results showed that Hg(II) provided better catalytic effect than Ag(I) for the abstraction of cyanide ions. Activation energies were calculated for each case and found to be 55.30 and 52.13 kJmol−1, respectively, for Ag(I)-catalyzed and Hg(II)-catalyzed substitutions. The catalytic efficiencies for each catalyst were also calculated using Lineweaver–Burk plot and found to be 7.65 × 103 M−1s−1 for Ag(I) and 9.06 × 103 M−1s−1 for Hg(II), respectively.
