The imaging resolution is defined by the numerical aperture of the objective lens. In this study, we proposed and demonstrated a Super-resolution Correlating OPtical Endoscopy (SCOPE) system. In SCOPE, modified recording and reconstruction methods are introduced with the existing built-in endoscopy lens. Instead of recording a single image, multiple images of the object are recorded by scanning the tip of the endoscope around the object. The recorded low-resolution images of the object are arranged as sub-matrices in a 2D matrix. Another similar 2D matrix with either recorded or synthesized point spread functions (PSFs) is created. The 2D matrices of the object and the PSF were processed using a deconvolution algorithm to reconstruct a super-resolution image of the object. Both simulation and proof-of-concept experimental studies have been presented. SCOPE neither requires any additional optical element nor any changes in the endoscopy system itself; therefore, it can be easily implemented in commercial endoscopy systems.

The two main directions of evolution are in aperture engineering to generate the optimal optical field and in development of computational reconstruction to reconstruct the object’s image from the intensity distribution with a minimal noise. The goal is to find the ideal aperture-reconstruction method pair and if not, to optimize one to match the other for designing an imaging system with required 3D imaging characteristics. Lucy-Richardson-Rosen algorithm (LR2A), a recently developed computational reconstruction method was found to perform better than its predecessors such as matched filter, Weiner filter, phase-only filter, Lucy-Richardson algorithm and non-linear reconstruction (NLR) for certain apertures when the point spread function (PSF) is a real and symmetric function. For other cases of PSF, NLR performed better than the rest of the methods. In this tutorial, LR2A has been presented as a g...

When pressures inside a fixed cavity of the body increases, ischemia, muscle injury, and organ failure can result. Aim To assess the benefits and outcomes of laparostomy for abdominal compartment syndrome. Methods This retrospective study included patients who underwent a laparostomy procedure as a treatment measure for abdominal compartment syndrome, secondary to different etiologies such as sepsis and major abdominal visceral trauma. Results Although there are a few complications such as incisional hernia in the future following a laparostomy, the mortality rate following the procedure is less than < 10%, thus ensuring a good prognosis for patients who present with acute surgical emergencies. It could also be further noted that an early closure by 7 to 14 days had definite beneficial outcomes as compared with delayed closure of more than 14 days. It prevented most l...

She presented to us with recurrent right hypochondrial pain of 2 years duration, exacerbated by deep breathing, cough, and hiccups not associated with vomiting or nausea. Ultrasound showed tiny 2mm gallstones. Laparoscopy revealed extensive perihepatic “violin string” like adhesions and underwent Laparoscopic Adhesiectomy with Cholecystectomy .FHCS affects the adolescent, sexually active women and in men as well. Till date, only one case reported in a 56yr old female with Fitz Hugh Curtis Syndrome from Mexico [1] . To our knowledge, this is the second instance, such a case reported in a 51 year-old woman postmenopausal status with single partner.

Uterine perforation followed by transmigration of intrauterine contraceptive device to the abdomi... more Uterine perforation followed by transmigration of intrauterine contraceptive device to the abdominal cavity is one of the rarest, but most dangerous complication of Copper T. These displaced Copper containing devices can cause chronic inflammatory reaction leading to adhesions, intestinal obstruction and even bowel perforation. Hence removal of these devices once found outside the uterus is recommended. Traditionally, a laparotomy used to be performed owing to the associated inflammation, adhesions and the risks of bowel injury. Laparoscopic removal of these displaced devices is a minimally invasive surgical approach with good results in skilled hands. Authors reported a rare case of misplaced transmigrated intrauterine contraceptive device in a 43-year-old asymptomatic lady. The Copper T had migrated after silent perforation of the uterus and was impacted in the greater omentum. There was evidence of chronic inflammation and small pockets of pus surrounding it. There were flimsy bo...

We report an interesting case of an Adolescent Arab male 18yr old, who presented to us with a velvety plaque of 7cm length in his left preauricular area. Excision biopsy revealed Nevus sebaceous of Jadassohn with infundibular and keratinous cyst. The lesion is present since birth started as a tiny lesion and grown to the current size. No such large sized lesion on the face has ever been reported in the medical literature till date. We advise an early excision as they have strong potential for malignant change.

It is uncommon and can affect any age group from childhood to the elderly. We report here a case of Primary peritonitis with septic shock as a presenting feature, associated with empyema thoracis. This combination was not reported previously in the literature. Our patient was a 15-yr old girl with a ten day history of fever, cough, dyspnea, abdominal pain and loose stools initially treated elsewhere. She was brought to the emergency in a gasping state, bradycardia, hypotension, tachypnoea and a distended abdomen. She was intubated, resuscitated and a bedside ultrasound revealed free fluid present all over peritoneal cavity. Emergency laparotomy under general anesthesia showed extensive thick yellow coloured nonfoul-smelling purulent fluid all over the peritoneal spaces with distended bowel loops. A thorough search confirmed no evidence of hollow-viscus perforati...

It commonly occurs in ICU patients associated with major trauma, burns, multiorgan failure patients, post major surgery, end stage malignancies, severe sepsis. Here we present a case of acute acalculous cholecystitis with gangrenous formation in a middle-aged outpatient without any prior illness. He was a hypertensive on medications came with complains of abdominal pain. Clinical examination and ultrasound revealed features suggestive of infective acalculous gall bladder disease. Emergency laparoscopic subtotal cholecystectomy done, discharged in a healthy state on 3rd postoperative day. We present this case to raise awareness among primary care physicians of AAC in patients with acute right hypochondrial pain. Prompt diagnosis and urgent surgical management gives the best outcome in these patients.
