Agent-based system architecture for wireless sensor networks

This paper reports on an ongoing research on developing an agent based system architecture for wi... more This paper reports on an ongoing research on developing an agent based system architecture for wireless sensor networks. The main objective of this system is to facilitate the design, implementation, and maintaining applications for sensor networks that consist of wireless sensor nodes. The proposed system architecture contains the following four types of agents: interface, regional, cluster, and query agents. The interface agents receive queries from the users and return the results back to them. The regional agent is responsible for sending query packets to the cluster agents. The cluster agents disseminate query into the network and provide efficient in-network processing. Finally, the query agents process the query in the sensor node. The delegation of specific tasks to different software agents facilitates the development and maintenance of sensor network applications

Comfort-based fuzzy control optimization for energy conservation in HVAC systems

The work presented herein illustrates the use of computational intelligence and optimization appr... more The work presented herein illustrates the use of computational intelligence and optimization approaches for improving the fuzzy controller's performance in architectural heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system (HVAC). The primary purpose of the performed research is to find a method to moderate the energy use without compromising the comforts of the inhabitants. The control design used to meet this purpose includes the predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) indices. The software of choice for evaluating PMV and PPD is EnergyPlus. Whereas, for the fuzzy controller and the evolutionary optimization framework, the co-simulation tool with building controls virtual test bed (BCVTB) is used in conjunction with Simulink. The ensuing comparison between EnergyPlus's thermal control of HVAC and our fuzzy approach is the outcome of the present research.

Energy simulation of a building is a key to study the energy efficiency in the building. This paper presents an integrated framework based on GoogleTM SketchUp, OpenStudio, ResultViewer, and EnergyPlus software for energy simulation of a large hotel building with different types of energy zones, loads schedules, and set-points. The aim of this paper is to calculate some important KPIs in a building environment to access the overall efficiency of the building.

ABSTRACT This paper presents time domain methods for early fault detection and severity analysis ... more ABSTRACT This paper presents time domain methods for early fault detection and severity analysis in non-destructive testing (NDT) of electromechanical rotating machines. An adaptive band pass filtering technique has been used to detect faulty pulses present in the signal emanating from a gearbox. A pulse position analysis method is used to calculate rotational speed of faulty components in the gearbox. Faulty pulse shape is further analyzed visually to estimate fault severity. Visual inspection of the gearbox is also performed to verify the results obtained through proposed methods. The proposed method is a useful input to manage maintenance personnel in an effective way and reduce maintenance costs.

A new system-on-a-chip radar sensor for next-generation wearable wireless interface applied to th... more A new system-on-a-chip radar sensor for next-generation wearable wireless interface applied to the human health care and safeguard is presented. The system overview is provided and the feasibility study of the radar sensor is presented. In detail, the overall system consists of a radar sensor for detecting the heart and breath rates and a low-power IEEE 802.15.4 ZigBee radio interface, which provides a wireless data link with remote data acquisition and control units. In particular, the pulse radar exploits 3.1-10.6 GHz ultra-wideband signals which allow a significant reduction of the transceiver complexity and then of its power consumption. The operating principle of the radar for the cardiopulmonary monitoring is highlighted and the results of the system analysis are reported. Moreover, the results obtained from the building-blocks design, the channel measurement, and the ultrawideband antenna realization are reported.

The value of dual-energy CTA for control of surgically clipped aneurysms

Comparison of image quality in DE-CTA with and without automatic head bone removal (BR) versus CT... more Comparison of image quality in DE-CTA with and without automatic head bone removal (BR) versus CTA with 16-detectors as a tool in postoperative evaluation of patients after neurosurgical clipping. In this study 30 aneurysms that had undergone neurosurgical clipping were included: 18 with DE-CTA and 12 with conventional CTA. The images were further processed using the volume rendering technique (VRT) and BR. Two experienced neuroradiologists reviewed the images regarding the severity of artefacts surrounding the clip, visibility of the vessels and remnant necks. The results were compared with DSA images, if performed. Significantly fewer disturbances by artefacts were observed in DE-CTA versus CTA in a 16-row system. Visibility of the surrounding vessels was satisfying in both techniques and there were comparable results with DSA with only one exception. All images produced with 140 kV provided fewer artefacts than those with 80 kV. DE-CTA provides better image quality with fewer disturbances by clip artefact, a satisfying evaluation of remnant aneurysm necks and the surrounding vessels. As this method is easily performed and readily accessible with fast image post-processing using BR it provides an opportunity to avoid invasive DSA in the evaluation of suspected aneurysm rests.
