The surface curvatures in the face contain the most important personal feature information. In this paper, 3D face images are recognized by the face components: cheek, eyes, mouth, and nose. For the proposed approach, the first step uses the face curvatures which present the facial features for 3D face images, after normalization using the singular value decomposition (SVD). Fisherface method is then applied to each component curvature face. The reason for adapting the Fisherface method maintains the surface attribute for the face curvature, even though it can generate reduced image dimension. And histogram of oriented gradients (HOG) descriptor is one of the state-of-art methods which have been shown to significantly outperform the existing feature set for several objects detection and recognition. In the last step, the linear discriminant analysis is explained for each component. The experimental results showed that the proposed approach leads to higher detection accuracy rate than other methods.

The biological processes underlying these data-layers can lead to intricate multivariate association patterns. Results: We propose and evaluate two methods for analysis variance when both input and output sets are high-dimensional. Our approach uses random effects models to estimate the proportion of variance of vectors in the linear span of the output set that can be explained by regression on the input set. We consider a method based on orthogonal basis (Eigen-ANOVA) and one that uses random vectors (Monte Carlo ANOVA, MC-ANOVA) in the linear span of the output set. We used simulations to assess the bias and variance of each of the methods, and to compare it with that of the Partial Least Squares (PLS)-an approach commonly used in multivariate-high-dimensional regressions. The MC-ANOVA method gave nearly unbiased estimates in all the simulation scenarios considered. Estimates produced by Eigen-ANOVA and PLS had noticeable biases. Finally, we demonstrate insight that can be obtained with the of MC-ANOVA and Eigen-ANOVA by applying these two methods to the study of multilocus linkage disequilibrium in chicken genomes and to the assessment of inter-dependencies between gene expression, methylation and copy-number-variants in data from breast cancer tumors. .

Perhaps, one of the most challenging issues is related to the high variability of the brain signals, which directly impacts the accuracy of the classification. In this sense, novel feature extraction techniques should be explored in order to select those able to face this variability. Furthermore, to improve the performance of the selected feature extraction technique, the parameters of the filter applied in the preprocessing stage need to be properly selected. en, this work presents an analysis of the robustness of the fractal dimension as feature extraction technique under high variability of the EEG signals, particularly when the training data are recorded one day and the testing data are obtained on a different day. e results are compared with those obtained by an autoregressive model, which is a technique commonly used in BCI applications. Also, the effect of properly selecting the cutoff frequencies of the filter in the preprocessing stage is evaluated. is research is supported by several experiments carried out using a public data set from the BCI international competition, specifically data set 2a from BCIIC IV, related to motor tasks. By a statistical test, it is demonstrated that the performance achieved using the fractal dimension is significantly better than that reached by the AR model. Also, it is demonstrated that the selection of the appropriate cutoff frequencies improves significantly the performance in the classification. e increase rate is approximately of 17%.

Recently, it has been proven that this type of neurons can be applied to solve pattern recognition problems with great efficiency. However, the lack of learning strategies for training these models do not allow to use them in several pattern recognition problems. On the other hand, several bioinspired algorithms have been proposed in the last years for solving a broad range of optimization problems, including those related to the field of artificial neural networks (ANNs). Artificial bee colony (ABC) is a novel algorithm based on the behavior of bees in the task of exploring their environment to find a food source. In this paper, we describe how the ABC algorithm can be used as a learning strategy to train a spiking neuron aiming to solve pattern recognition problems. Finally, the proposed approach is tested on several pattern recognition problems. It is important to remark that to realize the powerfulness of this type of model only one neuron will be used. In addition, we analyze how the performance of these models is improved using this kind of learning strategy.

Furthermore, it is known that most of these samples are variations of known malicious programs and hence have structural similarities. In this regard, to solve this problem, several classification methods to detect new malware or variants thereof are needed. This research presents a method for detecting malware based on the number of times the program calls different functions of each dynamic link library (DLL). Once the feature vector of each program is computed, an artificial neural network is trained to classify variants of malware. To validate the performance of the proposed methodology a database containing current and real samples of worms and Trojans is used.

The dispersion relations for such waves are obtained analytically and solved numerically. It has shown that the existence of surface modes is dependent upon the relative parameters of the isotropic medium and the semi-infinite superlattice. Furthermore, we study the mathematical analogy between acoustic, electromagnetic waves and quantum confined states. A general mathematical expression that described physical phenomena of different nature is obtained.

A common place for injuries is the knee, with a wide range from knee sprains to complex ligamentous injuries to fractures. In this chapter, we made a search in PubMed using the words "knee" and "ski." Later, we selected those articles according to the inclusion criteria. When reviewing the literature, we found that the most common place for a ski-related injury is the knee, with knee sprains and ACL lesions being the most common diagnosis in the latter years with a decreasing incidence of tibia fractures. We could also analyze the risk factors different authors have found, for professional athletes and for recreational skiers. In conclusion, the ACL lesion in the skier presents a high incidence, which suggests an effort should be made to prevent it.
