Dr. Quazi Hamidul Bari is a Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering at KUET, Khulna, Bangladesh, with expertise in water supply, wastewater treatment, solid waste management, air pollution, and climate change in the Environmental Engineering field. Prof. Bari graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering at KUET. Prof. Bari has a Master of Engineering degree in Environmental Engineering from AIT, Bangkok, Thailand, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Hong Kong, SAR, PRC. Apart from his regular teaching duties at the university, he conducts several training programs on climate change, GHG emissions, the greenhouse effect, global temperature rise, air pollution, ozone layer depletion, acid rain, net zero energy building (nZEB), water pollution, and soil pollution. His research interests include treatment technologies for the removal of conventional and emerging contaminants from water, wastewater, and sludge sources

In this study, traditional recycling pattern of solid waste was investigated in Rajshahi municipality which is the fourth largest city of Bangladesh. A questionnaire survey had been carried out in various recycle shops during April 2010 to January 2011. There were 140 recycle shops and most of them were located in the vicinity of Stadium market in Rajshahi. About 1906 people were found to be involved in recycling activities of the city. The major fraction of recycled wastes were sent to capital city Dhaka for further manufacture of different new products. Only a small amount of wastes, specially plastics, were processed in local recycle factories to produce small washing pots and bottle caps. Everyday, an estimated 28.13 tons of recycled solid wastes were handled in Rajshahi city area. This recycled portion accounted for 8.25% of the daily total generated wastes (341 ton d À1), 54.6% of total recyclable wastes (51.49 ton d À1) and 68.29% of readily recyclable wastes (41.19 ton d À1). Major recycled materials were found to be iron, glass, plastic, and papers. Only five factories were involved in preliminary processing of recyclable wastes. Collecting and processing secondary materials, manufacturing recycled-content products, and then buying recycled products created a circle or loop that ensured the overall success of recycling and generated a host of financial, environmental, and social returns.

The vegetable waste, paper waste, and sawdust as a filler were mixed intensively in a ratio of 75:10:15. The temperature of composting mass inside the reactors was recorded intermittently daily. The weights of total sample and volatile solids were measured for both passive and forced aeration composting tests before and after composting the mixed waste. The temperature rose to a maximum of 52°C with passive aeration and 54°C with forced aeration. The percent decrease in the total sample was higher with forced aeration than with passive aeration. The volatile solids reduced over time at the end of these tests. The degree of volatile solids degradation of the mixed waste over time by the forced aeration was determined for a series of the composting processes. The amount of volatile solids and total sample were determined at 2-to 4-day intervals. The percent reduction in volatile solids and total sample was found to be 4 to 55% and 3 to 68%, respectively. The percent reduction in volatile solids increased with time. The chapter helps to understand the recycling possibility of the mixed waste in the form of compost.

The vane shear strength and total solids content of dewatered sludge from Hong Kong were determin... more The vane shear strength and total solids content of dewatered sludge from Hong Kong were determined in order to evaluate their geotechnical suitability for disposal in landfills. The results obtained indicate that (i) the total solids and vane shear strength of dewatered sludge from different treatment plants varied considerably depending on the type of sludge and dewatering method; and, (ii) percent total solids alone is not sufficient to guarantee geotechnical stability in terms of vane shear strength. The critical state model for soils provided a good fit for the characteristic relationship between vane shear strength and total solids, which can be used to estimate vane shear strength from total solids only. No relationship between volatile solids and vane shear strength was found. The results of the laboratory vane shear test correlated well with those obtained by a pocket shearmeter indicating the usefulness of this method for rapid determination of vane shear strength on site....

The Demo Compost Plant was setup at the adjacent area of an existing compost plant located at Khulna city in Bangladesh. Four different composting technologies were considered, where Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) were used as a raw material for composting, collected from the adjacent areas of the plant. Initially the whole composting system was conducted through two experimental setups. In this study, temperature variation, the mass balance of forced and passively aeration on composting process, and the extent of degradation with different stages were investigated. The extent of degradation was determined through the different composting process in the first, second and third stage with different mix proportion of Faecal Sludge. Four sets of the initial waste mixture were prepared using SW and FS. SW and FS were mixed at four different ratios for four sets namely 90:10, 85:15, 80:20, and 75:25 (SW: FS). Forced aeration and passively aeration composting tests were done using series of reactors as described above according to a planned experimental program. The results show that (i) the mean maximum temperature of the first and second stage were 65 oC and 56 oC of passively, 67 oC and 60 oC of forced aeration respectively which raised within 7 days. (ii) According to the mass balance, total mass, moisture content, and volatile solids were always decreased at every stage for passive and forced aeration process, the degradation of the volatile solid in composting process using forced aeration was more than passively aeration process. (iii) For the passively and forced aeration process, the total BVS degradation of were ranged between 82 % to 89 %, and 73% to 91% respectively after 60 days. Therefore, it can be concluded that the percentage of BVS degradation in forced and passively aeration was not significantly different.
