The Distributed Agent-Based Information Dissemination System (DAIDS) concept was motivated by the... more The Distributed Agent-Based Information Dissemination System (DAIDS) concept was motivated by the need to share information among the members of a military tactical team in an atmosphere of extremely limited or intermittent bandwidth. The DAIDS approach recognizes that in many cases communications limitations will preclude the complete sharing of all tactical information between the members of the tactical team. Communications may be limited by obstructions to the line of sight between platforms; electronic warfare; or environmental conditions, or just contention from other users of that bandwidth. Since it may not be possible to achieve a complete information exchange, it is important to prioritize transmissions so the most critical information from the standpoint of the recipient is disseminated first. Performing repeatable and controlled cyber experiments requires the precise description of hardwa... more Performing repeatable and controlled cyber experiments requires the precise description of hardware, software and testbed assets used during an experiment. An experiment specifies the assets that are required to build the system under test and the experimental framework. Different assets must be specified at different levels of detail to ensure experimental coherence and repeatability. This paper describes the family of asset description ontologies that is used in the National Cyber Range (NCR). This family of ontologies is used to characterize software and hardware assets used during cyber experiments. We also describe how these ontologies are used for different aspects of defining, setting up, executing, and analyzing the results of experiments, and indicate how they can be used for more general-purpose applications.

The Intelligence Community, among others, is increasingly using document metadata to improve docu... more The Intelligence Community, among others, is increasingly using document metadata to improve document search and discovery on intranets and extranets. Document markup is still often incomplete, inconsistent, incorrect, and limited to keywords via HTML and XML tags. OWL promises to bring semantics to this markup to improve its machine understandability. A usable markup tool is becoming a barrier to the more widespread use of OWL markup in operational settings. This paper describes some of our attempts at building markup tools, lessons learned, and our latest markup tool, the Semantic Markup Tool (SMT). SMT uses automatic text extractors and templates to hide ontological complexity from end users and helps them quickly specify events and relationships of interest in the document. SMT automatically generates correct and consistent OWL markup. This comes at a cost to expressivity. We are evaluating SMT on several pilot semantic web efforts.

Detecting Emergent Behaviors with Semi-Boolean Algebra

As aerospace and military systems become increasingly interconnected, their combined behavior can... more As aerospace and military systems become increasingly interconnected, their combined behavior can become more complex than each individual subsystem in isolation and unexpected self-organizing or emergent behaviors can result. Explicit consideration of emergent behavior has not been addressed in current systems development methodologies. This paper gives background on approaches for modeling emergent behavior and discusses the use of semi-Boolean algebra as a means for detecting emergence in combined behaviors. Semi-Boolean algebra is a generalization of the Boolean algebra by weakening the requirement that any two elements have a common upper bound. The paper also shares an example approach for modeling emergent behavior and describes several ways to detect emergent behavior with this technique.

As social networks expand and interconnect with other social networks, their combined behavior ca... more As social networks expand and interconnect with other social networks, their combined behavior can become more complex than each individual network in isolation and can result in unexpected self-organizing or emergent behaviors. This emergent behavior results from the combined knowledge or skills of the participants, and it enables the group to do things that it could not otherwise accomplish. Examples of such social network emergence can be found in startup companies, charitable organizations, groups of researchers and terrorist cells. This paper discusses a mathematical modeling technique for prediction and detection of emergent behavior in social networks using Semi-Boolean Algebra. This paper discusses emergent behavior, the use of Semi-Boolean Algebra for detecting it, and gives examples of its use on emergence in an example social network.

There is a lack of widespread understanding on how the Semantic Web could be used in day-today applications. While there are now practical applications that have appeared supporting back-end functions such as data integration, there is only a handful of Semantic Web applications that the average Google user would want to use on a regular basis. The Concept Object Web 1 is a prototype application for knowledge/intelligence management that aggregates data from text documents, XML files, and databases so that end-users can visually discover and learn about knowledge object (entities) without reading documents. The application addresses limitations with current knowledge/intelligence management tools giving end-users the power of the Semantic Web without the perceived burden and complexity of the Semantic Web.

The Cyber Scientific Method (CSM) formalizes experimentation on computer systems, hardware, softw... more The Cyber Scientific Method (CSM) formalizes experimentation on computer systems, hardware, software, and networks on the U.S. National Cyber Range. This formalism provides rigor to cyber tests to ensure knowledge can be shared and experiment results can be viewed with confidence, knowing exactly what was tested under what conditions. Cyber Scientific Test Language (CSTL) is an ontology-based language for CSM experiments. CSTL describes test objectives, statistical experiment design, test network composition, sensor placement, and data analysis and visualization. CSTL represents CSM experiments throughout their lifecycle, from test design through detailed test network description, instrumentation and control network augmentation, testbed buildout, data collection, and analysis. The representation of this information in a formal ontology has several benefits. It enables use of general-purpose reasoners to query and recombine test specifications for rapidly building an experiment network and testbed on the range. Additionally, it facilitates knowledge management and retrieval of test procedures and results.
