Las muestras depositadas en el MNHNCL representan, en consecuencia, aunque en forma reducida, un testimonio integrado de los resultados de esta expedición.

A male specimen of the Aesop slipper lobster Scyllarides haanii was found in the coastal vicinity... more A male specimen of the Aesop slipper lobster Scyllarides haanii was found in the coastal vicinity of Ahu Tongariki (27°07'33"S, 109°16'37"W), Rapa Nui. Its taxonomic determination was carried out by a detailed morphological examination and a DNA barcoding identification analysis by sequencing the cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 (COX1) gene. S. haanii has a wide geographic distribution with occasional presence from the Indo-Pacific to the Hawaiian Archipelago, including the Red Sea, Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Australia, Reunion, and French Polynesia; from 10 to 135 m of depth, preferably on rocky bottoms. This record extends the geographical distribution of S. haanii to Rapa Nui. It increases to five the species number of marine lobsters present on the island: a Palinuridae, Panulirus pascuensis and four Scyllaridae, Parribacus perlatus, Arctides regalis, Scyllarides roggevenni, and now S. haanii. Contenidos gástricos de la langosta de Valparaíso Projasus bahamondei George, 1976 (Crustacea: Decapada: Palinuridae) de los montes submarinos del Cordón Nazca

Se estudió el contenido gástrico de Projasus bahamondei George, 1976, basado en 163 ejemplares (6... more Se estudió el contenido gástrico de Projasus bahamondei George, 1976, basado en 163 ejemplares (61 machos y 102 hembras), capturados entre 360 y 400 m de profundidad, en los montes submarinos del Cordón Nazca, a 400 millas al oeste del límite Chile-Perú, entre diciembre de 1990 y febrero de 1991. En ellos se identificaron: bacterias (Thioploca sp.), foraminiferos, hidrozoos, crustáceos (lepádidos, copépodos, huevos y otros restos), moluscos gastrópodos, peces teleósteos, material orgánico muy desintegrado y sedimentos. No se detectaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas al comparar los contenidos estomacales de machos y hembras en relación a número y frecuencia de ítems (lndice de Winner=0,98). Tampoco se observó diferencias significativas entre sexos en la relación longitud-peso (P menor que 0,05).

La revisión bibliográfica de los moluscos terrestres citados para el AJF se complementó con mater... more La revisión bibliográfica de los moluscos terrestres citados para el AJF se complementó con material de recolecciones realizadas durante: Febrero-Marzo, 1997 (Expedición Islas Oceánicas de Chile, IOCNational Geographic, B/O Carlos Porter); 5-12 Noviembre, 2005 (Expedición MNHNCL al AJF); 16 y 17 Diciembre 2008 (AP-41 Aquiles), y 7-8 Diciembre 2013 (LSDH-91 Sargento Aldea). En esta última una exhaustiva recolección de gasterópodos en Isla Robinson Crusoe permitió confirmar la existencia de una familia nativa, Tornatellinidae, con ejemplares del género Fernandezia, nativo, en sectores rurales, asociados a helechos del género Blechnum, nativo de la isla. Además se recolectaron ejemplares de tres familias exóticas de los géneros indicados, presentes principalmente en sectores urbanos: Limacidae (Deroceras), Zonitidae (Oxychilus) y Helicidae (ejemplares de Cornu (Helix) aspersum). Crustáceos decápodos en el registro arqueológico del Holoceno medio y tardío en la provincia de Choapa

Se recolectaron 11 especies de crustáceos decápodos, más otros restos de crustáceos indeterminado... more Se recolectaron 11 especies de crustáceos decápodos, más otros restos de crustáceos indeterminados aún, procedentes de excavaciones arqueológicas llevadas a cabo en la costa de la comuna de Los Vilos, provincia de Choapa. El material obtenido en los hallazgos de estos asentamientos corresponde a los siguientes decápodos; Homalaspis plana (jaiba mora). Pachycheles grossimanus, Taliepus dentatus, Portunus asper, Platyxanthops orbigny, Pilumnoides perlatus, Eurypanopeus crenatus, Cycloxanthops sexdecimdentatus, Paraxanthus barbiger, Acanthocyclus hassleri y Bellia picta. Relativamente, la jaiba mora apareció como un elemento constante en casi todos los hallazgos del Arcaico Medio y Tardío. La diversidad de decápodos aumentó en los hallazgos de menor antigüedad. Los procesos tafonómicos han permitido la conservación esencialmente de los dactilopoditos articulados y fijos. Biotopos marinos intermareales entre Canal Trinidad y Canal Smyth, Sur de Chile

Through an oceanographic cruise carried out between the southern area of Aysén and the northern o... more Through an oceanographic cruise carried out between the southern area of Aysén and the northern one of Magallanes, Canal Trinidad to Canal Smyth (50º00'S, 75º00'W to 52º00'S, 73º48'W), 13 collecting stations were made to gather biological material to record and characterizing the intertidal biotopes of this extended area. A total of 19 biotopes were identified, from which 12 of those had been recorded previously at more septentrional areas of Aysén; other 6 represented variations of those previously recorded in other areas and only 1 was described as a new intertidal biotope. Among the former ones are rocky shore biotopes belonging to the dominant species Bostrychia harveyi, Acrosiphonia pacifica, Porphyra sp., Adenocystis utricularis, Iridaea tuberculosa and Mazzaella laminarioides-Nothogenia fastigiata. Among the 6 ones which represent variations of some biotopes before described there are 2 of Porphyra sp., 3 of Bostrychia harveyi and 1 of Mazzaella laminarioides-Nothogenia fastigiata. Just the rocky shore biotope integrated by the macroalgae Caepidium antarcticum and crustose coralline algae was the only new one. This new biotope is distributed in the lower eulitoral subzone of sheltered areas and it is characterized by having a strong subantarctic influence. Coastal biotope biodiversity was high, as a consequence of the multiple geographic, geologic, oceanographic and climatic factors interacting in this extended region. In general, the area was characterized by exhibiting a high biological diversity reflected through the diversity of observed biotopes, which demonstrated the presence of highly productive ecosystem.

Durante el Crucero 16 CIMAR Fiordos realizado entre el Estrecho de Magallanes y el Canal Beagle (... more Durante el Crucero 16 CIMAR Fiordos realizado entre el Estrecho de Magallanes y el Canal Beagle (53º11,16'S; 73º24,06'W-55º09'03,92''S, 68º08'27,9''W) se realizó un muestreo intermareal y submareal de 14 estaciones. Estas muestras se obtuvieron manualmente y por buceo apnea, en transectas perpendiculares a la línea de la costa, con orientación sur-este y en ellas se aplicó la metodología establecida en el Crucero CIMAR 15 para la caracterización de los biotopos costeros. Se determinaron 10 biotopos marinos que corresponden a tres grandes grupos: 1) biotopos con fuerte influencia de agua dulce de deshielos y lluvias, con playas extensas sin pendientes rocosas; son de diversidad baja, con presencia notoria de Porphyra spp. en sectores rocosos planos y con salinidades que varían entre 1 y 20‰; 2) biotopos rocosos con mayor pendiente, comparativamente con mayor influencia de mareas y presencia de algas rodófi tas, feófitas y clorófi tas asociadas a bivalv...

Species movements within biogeographic regions: exploring the distribution of transplanted mollusc species in South America

The movement of species is among the most serious environmental threats of the new millennium, as... more The movement of species is among the most serious environmental threats of the new millennium, as the transplantation of species beyond their native or historical range has intensified in the last five decades. Traditionally, studies on bioinvasions have focused on species that have been introduced, deliberately or accidentally, to biogeographic regions where they did not previously occur. However, less attention has been given to species movement to novel areas within the same biogeographic region. Our research group, the South America Introduced Molluscs Specialists, analyzed potential cases of native South American mollusc species introduced deliberately or accidentally beyond their natural range within South America. To achieve this, it is key to differentiate between anthropogenic processes and passive responses to environmental conditions. We considered the past and current spatial distribution of species, analyzed known or putative vectors, and discuss the impacts of taxonomic and nomenclatural knowledge. Based on the evidence currently available, we propose different scenarios to explain observed changes in mollusc distributions within South America. Seventeen transplanted mollusc species (TMS) were recognized, considering marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. Of the 189 South American ecoregions 31 were occupied by transplanted species, but this proportion varied by environment: 10 of 28 marine ecoregions, 12 of 52 freshwater ecoregions, and 9 of 109 terrestrial ecoregions. The ecoregions with TMS are generally located in the peripheral zones of the continent. Those with the highest number of TMS were the Southern Caribbean (three species) in the marine environment, the Central Andean Pacific Slopes (three species) in the freshwater environment, and the Alto Paraná Atlantic forests (two species) in the terrestrial environment. The number of unintentionally moved TMS is greater than those moved intentionally. The transplantation process is similar to the introduction and settlement process of non-native mollusc species, and so is their impact.

Tigriopus angulatus is a harpacticoid copepod, which inhabits intertidal pools in the South Pacif... more Tigriopus angulatus is a harpacticoid copepod, which inhabits intertidal pools in the South Pacific coasts. Through analysis of fatty acids by gaseous chromatography of specimens collected in Montemar area, Valparaíso Bay, central Chile, we determined the relative composition (mass percentage of fatty acids) and quantity of fatty acids (ng ind-1) of the following ontogenetic stages: eggs, non-ovigerous females, ovigerous females and males. All analyzed stages had higher relative percentages of saturated and mono-unsaturated fatty acids than high-unsaturated and poli-unsaturated fatty acids. The omega 3 family showed higher relative percentages than omega 6. The more abundant fatty acids were palmitic, stearic, oleic, eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids. The fatty acids quantity per individual was significantly different between eggs and adult females. The adult non-ovigerous and ovigerous females showed more total fatty acids than males and eggs, and only male were quantitatively similar in fatty acids to the eggs.

RESUMEN: Se describen estadios de puerulus y postpuerulus de la langosta espinosa de profundidad,... more RESUMEN: Se describen estadios de puerulus y postpuerulus de la langosta espinosa de profundidad, n.v.: langosta de Valparaíso, Projasus bahamondei. El material fue obtenido en pescas de arrastre comerciales de langostinos y camarón nailon. Existe variabilidad entre los distintos ejemplares de larvas y postlarvas estudiados. El tamaño de los ejemplares es mayor que el puerulus de otras especies de palinúridos. P. bahamondei, del talud continental de Chile, archipiélago de Juan Fernández, islas Desventuradas y del cordón submarino de Nazca, junto a P. parkeri de Sudáfrica, Nueva Zelanda e isla Saint Paul en el océano Indico y Projasus sp. de New South Wales, Australia, pertenecen a un género circumpolar de profundidad, filogenéticamente muy antiguo, de origen Gondwánico. Se comparan los estadios descritos con aquéllos de P. parkeri y Projasus sp.

Several large adults o{Homolodromia robertsi Garth, 1973, previously known from 2 females collect... more Several large adults o{Homolodromia robertsi Garth, 1973, previously known from 2 females collected off the coast of Peru, were collected from deep waters off the coast of Chile. The male of the species is described. In general, characters of the male are similar to those of the female; little sexual dimorphism exists. The first gonopod is 3-segmented, robust, and similar to that of other genera in the Dromiacea and to an earlier description of the pleopods oi Homolodromia paradaxa. Data on the biology of the species (occurrence of ovigerous females, geographic range, and morphometry) are included. The range of the species is extended more than 2,600 km south.

Se recolectaron 10 ejemplares de Paracrangon areolata Faxon en aguas chilenas: nueve entre 35º31'... more Se recolectaron 10 ejemplares de Paracrangon areolata Faxon en aguas chilenas: nueve entre 35º31'S-73º04'W y 35º43'S-73º16'W y uno frente a Iquique. La distribución batimétrica de esta especie se determinó entre los 580 y 800 m. Este hallazgo representa un género y una especie nueva para la fauna carcinológica de Chile, que vive en el talud continental integrando de la fauna arquibéntica.

Only 15 families of decapod crustaceans living as larvae in oceanic waters of northern Chile surv... more Only 15 families of decapod crustaceans living as larvae in oceanic waters of northern Chile survived the strong impact of the El Niño 1982-83 event. A key considering only their most conspicuous external characters, without specimens dissection, is given. These families represent one third of the total reported for the area living under "normal" oceanographic conditions; and at the level of species the 22 collected are almost one seventh of their total of 150. Species introduced in the area with more septentrional waters belong to the families Penaeidae and Sicyoniidae. Collected larvae were mainly those from intertidal and sublittoral waters.
