the current economical context is pushing companies to do more with less, with better quality, to... more the current economical context is pushing companies to do more with less, with better quality, to do it faster and most of all in a cost effective manner. Apart from creating economies of scales, ensuring operational efficiencies is also of a paramount importance. To do so, many companies strive to implement lean processes and best practices and amongst other alternatives, implementing IT software solutions such as Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). Such tools can help manufacturing companies shorten the manufacturing cycle, improve the process performances and increase therefore the company competitiveness in a very challenging market landscape. Acquiring such tools would be most of the times very expensive especially for small and medium businesses that are very cautious about their CAPEX/OPEX spending. This is mainly because MES solutions are offered as a package of several modules and their integration with the existing systems and infrastructure imply additional cost and burden for this type of companies. In this paper, we are presenting the literature view on modeling MES solution systems which will be as a guideline for our approach to assist small and medium industries with a baseline model of MES solutions. The intended model will be established by first of all setting a benchmark of the MES solutions in European market, second a survey will be distributed to different Industrial companies in Moroccan market in order to grasp their needs and finally making a reference model using modeling tools such as Petri nets.

This problem is an extension of the job shop problem. We take into account transport operations of jobs between different machines using a limited number of robots. We also have blocking and no wait constraints. It means that after a completion of an operation, a job waits on its machine, thus blocking it, until the next machine and a robot are available. In the other hand, the job starts its processing on the machine immediately and without any interruption after the robot has accomplished the transportation operation, thus no wait constraints. The work presented in this article focuses on the problem of job shop with different handling rob... more The work presented in this article focuses on the problem of job shop with different handling robots and subject to some constraints of blocking and no.-wait. The blocking constraint models the lack of storage capacity whereas the constraint of No.-wait appears when two consecutive operations should be performed without interruption. Jobs must be transported between machines by different handling robots. In this type of problem, deadlock situations where the system becomes paralyzed may appear. In this paper, we present a method based on graph theory which helps prevent the blocking states during schedule construction. The calculation of transportation operations starting times is also illustrated. Finally, we propose an algorithm for the construction of a heuristic based on priority rules to minimize the total execution time that is defined by the makespan.

These criteria are used in the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) assessment and combined with discrete events simulation in a structured framework, which is validated through an empirical study.FindingsThe empirical case results demonstrate that both the AHP and discrete events simulation converge toward the same solution in most cases.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the literature on distribution management and develops a framework that can both guide future research and aid logistics practitioners in analysing distribution decision-making systems in dynamic environments.

ERP selection for an enterprise is a decision-making project that is both risky and expensive, a wrong selection of this system or project partners can lead to the failure of the ERP implementation project. In this paper, we combined the theoretical findings of ERP selection issue with expert's practical recommendations to determine the critical decisions that need to be made in the pre-implementation phase. Then we presented a methodology to determine ERP selection criteria based on the critical decisions analysis. A part of this work was performed within a company that has just launched an ERP implementation project.

Multi-model approaches to Discrete-Event-Systems (DES) are ideally suited to implementing operati... more Multi-model approaches to Discrete-Event-Systems (DES) are ideally suited to implementing operating mode management and inter-mode phase alternation (switching) policy. The resulting major problem involves respecting full system evolution tracking (both plant and specifications) when inter-mode switching is evoked. In other words, after jumping from a mode to another, the newly activated mode must be directed to a state (its starting state) corresponding to the full system evolution state. The aim is therefore to determine the possible starting states of each operating mode. This study develops the underlying notion that, whilst the tracking mechanism is required at plant level, it is extended to supervision level in the sense that specification interpretation remains unchanged in relation to the various starting states. This paper attempts to demonstrate formally, using Supervisory Control Theory (SCT), that there is an unique upervisor for each operating mode by proving that all event sets authorized by the supervisor remain independent of the different starting states.

This paper deals with operating mode management of Discrete Event Systems (DES) and this contribu... more This paper deals with operating mode management of Discrete Event Systems (DES) and this contribution is based on Supervisory Control Theory (SCT). Our aim is to extend SCT by introducing a mechanism for managing different operating modes for the controlled system. An operating mode corresponds to a specific system structure (engagement or disengagement of different system components) and specified tasks. Mode management will consist in controlling switching between modes with a view to handling models of reasonable size. Our approach is a multi-model one and involves representing a complex system by a set of simple automata models, each of which describes the system in a given operating mode. The adopted approach assumes that only one attempted operating mode is activated at a time, whilst other modes must be deactivated. The switching problem may be defined as finding compatible states, when controlled system behavior switches from one operating mode to another. The major contribution of this paper is the avoidance of switching from states (called forbidden states) with ghost compatible states in the selected operating mode. These states are called ghost because their existence would potentially violate a defined selected mode specification.

The integration of planning and scheduling decisions of loading, stacking/scraping, routing and p... more The integration of planning and scheduling decisions of loading, stacking/scraping, routing and production making up an integrated optimization plan without contradictory goals is vital for an efficient use of the four aforementioned bulk port operations. Usually, the optimization of these decisions is approached in an integrated fashion in one mathematical model. In this paper, we discuss another integration approach using a real case as an illustration. The proposed approach can improve the design phase in optimization problems and avoid the cons of the classical methodology. It can also come up with a number of pros which can be summed up mainly in the ability to design the optimization problems, in such a way to reflect the real aspects of the industrial settings.

Recommendations from WHO and specialists insist on testing on a mass scale. However, health systems do not have enough resources. The current process requires the isolation of testees in the hospitals’ isolation rooms for several hours until the test results are revealed, limiting hospitals’ capacities to test large numbers of cases. The aim of this paper was to estimate the impact of reducing the COVID-19 test time on controlling the pandemic spread, through increasing hospitals’ capacities to test on a mass scale. First, a discrete-event simulation was used to model and simulate the COVID-19 testing process in Morocco. Second, a mathematical model was developed to demonstrate the effect of accurate identification of infected cases on controlling the disease’s spread. The purpose of this study is to provide hospitals with a powerful immune system that can respond quickly to unexpected situations. This system suggests a process of organization and management of such situations from the reception of the information to the filtering of victims. Then, we will have to find our needs in human and material resources for the process input. This process is modelled using ARENA software. A case study was carried out in the prefectural hospital center (PHC) ALMANSOR in Casablanca (Morocco) to determine the different situations, especially in the emergency department (ED). The purpose is to work on the cases of recorded mass influxes.

This paper describes a hybrid approach to size the hospital resources in the cases of a massive i... more This paper describes a hybrid approach to size the hospital resources in the cases of a massive influx of victims generated by a disaster situation (natural or made man disaster). This suggested approach based on the genetic algorithm is a blending between the simulation (ARENA) and machine learning (Neural Networks). The first one produces a matrix of theoretical solutions and the second one contributes a solution based on the feedback on experiences. This method provided a reliable and efficient solution based on available resources and on a solutions applied in real cases. The result shows that the genetic algorithm provided a new solution that improves the solutions got by the simulation. Also we made an application as a decision support tool for hospital decision-makers to provide with the needs of resources in the same cases. This work is being carried out in collaboration with the Mohammed 5 hospital center in Casablanca (Morocco).
