Abstract Background The increase in the older population highlights the need for nursing students... more Abstract Background The increase in the older population highlights the need for nursing students to be prepared to provide quality care to older adults and address the impact of polypharmacy.The purpose of this study was to measure changes in empathy after participation in a polypharmacy simulation for geriatric clients among prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students. Sample A convenience sample consisted of junior and senior prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students (n = 34) at a large public institution. Methods This study is a quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest design. Student participants were given a prescription that included seven medications to be taken at various times in multiple configurations. Students completed the 15 item Kiersma-Chen Empathy Scale (KCES) as a pretest and posttest after completion of the mock prescription. Results Using a paired t test, a significant difference was found in the group’s mean score after the intervention. Conclusions Simulation activities can increase empathy in prelicensure baccalaureate nursing students.

Students that are not successful in the first attempt of taking this exam are statistically unlikely to pass on the second attempt. Purpose: To determine if the implementation of a prescribed remediation protocol would improve undergraduate baccalaureate predictor scores for passing the NCLEX-RN exam on the first attempt for high-risk students. Methods: A retrospective cohort study design was used to compare scores of nursing students after a prescribed remediation protocol was instituted. Results: A one-way ANOVA test was conducted to compare the effect of a remediation policy on nursing students enrolled in an undergraduate nursing program. Remediation had a significant effect at the p Conclusion: A prescribed remediation protocol assisted students in achieving the necessary scores on the Comprehensive Predictor exam to increase their likelihood of success on NCLEX.

Nursing Students' Perceptions of Just Culture in Nursing Programs

Background While just culture is embraced in the clinical setting, just culture has not been systematically incorporated into nursing education. Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess prelicensure nursing student perceptions of just culture in academia. Methods Following a quantitative, descriptive design, the Just Culture Assessment Tool for Nursing Education (JCAT-NE) was used to measure just culture across multiple (N = 15) nursing programs. Results The majority of JCAT-NE respondents (78%) reported their program has a safety reporting system, 15.4% had involvement in a safety-related event, and 12% submitted an error report. The JCAT-NE mean total score was 127.4 (SD, 23.6), with a statistically significant total score decline as students progressed from the beginning (133.6 [SD, 20.52]) to the middle (129.77 [SD, 23.6]) and end (122.2 [SD, 25.43]) of their programs (χ2[2] = 25.09, P < .001). Conclusions The results from this study are a call to action for nursing education to emphasize the tenets of just culture, error reporting, and quality improvement.

However, most undergraduate nursing programs substitute simulation for only 10%-25% of clinical experiences. In an attempt to increase the use of simulation in the undergraduate program, faculty designed an elective course that uses simulation as the primary learning method. This article outlines the faculty struggles, triumphs, and lessons learned as the course evolved over the last eight years.
