The telemedical portal is designed to support diversified clinical problems, therefore it should be flexible and extensible. To provide the required flexibility we separated the domain specific knowledge from the generic operational knowledge (implemented as services). The domain knowledge is represented by ontologies and knowledge bases that describe specific problems. Such separation allows the coupling of services with different knowledge bases without any changes in the operational knowledge. We present the overall architecture of the telemedical portal and use the consultation service and the knowledge base describing the problem of multiple organ injuries to present the separation and coupling. Specifically, we show how the generic consultation service stores information and automatically creates the user interface using the provided knowledge base. 1

There are to main conditions to start the development of new telemedical services: broadband network connectivity and the maturity of medical community and its willingness to deploy new model of services. In Wielkopolska region both these conditions have been fulfilled and therefore the pilot project for building telemedical portal was launched. As a pilot deployment environment the domain of surgery has been chosen to show the capabilities of the developed telemedical services in practice. Telemedycyna Wielkopolska aims to construct the following set of telemedical services: teleconsultansions, reference case registry, medical teleeducation and clinical decision support. In the paper we present the architecture of the portal environment and services already being developed. 1.
Real-time physical activity and mental stress management with a wristband and a smartphone

Physical activity monitoring is a mature area of ubiquitous computing, with many devices and mobile applications available on the market. Mental stress monitoring is still a hot research topic with few commercial solutions. This demo presents technology that goes beyond the state of the art in both areas, and powers a mobile application for lifestyle management.

Design/methodology/approach A series of focus group workshops were held with relatives of people with PIMD and direct support professionals (DSPs), as well as experts in information and communications technology (ICT). They were oriented towards the design thinking approach and moderated as per the Disney method. Findings The participants identified transitions from known to unknown caregivers, provision of care during the night and the impact of external factors on a person’s mood as challenging situations within the PIMD context. Practical implications Solving these problems would lead to considerable benefits to the affected people. Based on the ideas gathered in workshops, three technological applications for the INSENSION system were der...

However, computing power users want to be able to run their applications not only in a fast, but also in a comfortable manner. There have been numerous computing portals deployed around the world to facilitate access to the grid. Through undertaking the PROGRESS project Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center has also been involved in building a flexible grid-portal environment to aid users to make use of the resources a grid can offer. The HPC Window developed within the PROGRESS project facilitates access to grid resources and helps in creating a comfortable grid-workplace. The demonstrated prototype introduces the grid service provider and presents how it may be utilized by a computing portal. Our presentation is related to Topic 06: Grid Computing and Middleware Systems.

These technologies allow creating distributed grid services to hide the complexity of the underlying resource network and forming virtual organizations, which is the central concept of grid computing philosophy. Grid researchers and developers gather together under the auspices of the Global Grid Forum to implement common applications of grid services through definition of open standards. We believe that grid research should also cover incorporation of digital libraries concepts and functionalities to work together with other components in complex grid applications. This is why, based on our experience gained from numerous grid and digital library projects, we list some grid opportunities involving digital libraries and draw paths to follow to enable digital libraries to the grid, grid applications and grid users.

To this end grid technologies designed and developed over the recent years and grid infrastructures deployed with their use seem to provide an excellent opportunity for the creation of a powerful environment capable of delivering tools and services for medical data storage, access and processing. In this paper we present the early results of our work towards establishing a Medical Digital Library supported by grid technologies and discuss future directions of its development. These works are part of the "Telemedycyna Wielkopolska" project aiming to develop a telemedical system for the support of the regional healthcare.

In the scope of the PROGRESS project we designed a Grid Service Provider (GSP) which acts as a new additional layer between the grid and grid user interfaces. The introduction of the GSP enables easy development of many different grid user interfaces such as web portals and standalone applications. In this paper we present this newly distinguished item of grid-portal environment architecture, which might improve the flexibility of grid user interfaces.

Researchers all around the world have started to use the grid to solve important scientific problems in relatively short periods of time. Many scientific applications have already been enabled on the grid and many of them are waiting to become grid-aware. It is important to make this process of enabling applications on the grid easy. The tools used to create grid portals and grid access environments can help to achieve this task and facilitate the process of enabling applications on the grid and within grid portals. Many outstanding works have been conducted in that field. In this paper we present our contribution to these works that we believe can help to create an environment in which enabling applications within a grid portal is easy and requires little effort.

We are involved in the implementation of such a medical teleconsultation network for the benefit of hospitals in Wielkopolska, Poland. While we believe in huge improvement of the regional healthcare thanks to the deployment of a medical teleconsultation system, we are concerned whether this is enough, especially in the context of a very high expected number of transactions and limited amount of medical competence in certain areas. We therefore introduced the concept of providing a number of services built within the Medical Digital Library as an improvement of the medical teleconsultation system in the Wielkopolska regional health network. In this paper we discuss advantages of implementing a Medical Digital Library in the Wielkopolska health network, basing on our practical experience in digital library deployments.
