The purpose of the workshop was to gather a diverse audience including MEMS academics, professionals from MEMS industry, leaders from MEMS-relevant U.S. government agencies, as well as current students. Goals included: identifying 'best practices' to share across organizations teaching MEMS courses; identifying cross-cutting issues and a set of recommendations to sponsor organizations for investment in MEMS educational development; and establishing an open dialog on these issues for continued interactions. Challenges identified include: developing a curriculum meeting needs of students seeking to be educated in this field; suitably spanning the broad interdisciplinary space covered by MEMS; and creating a technically prepared workforce.

The problem is formulated as a Linear Programming (LP) model with two objectives: minimizing total cost and minimizing total CO 2 emissions, while capping the Expected Unserved Energy (EUE). Total emissions include, in addition to the direct emissions from burning fossil fuel, the embedded emissions of all system components, obtained using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) techniques. The proposed approach is applied on a case study which entails designing a HPS for a city of 50,000 residents. Model inputs were extracted from real environmental and technical data. The results obtained were used to construct the Pareto front, representing the best trade-off between cost and emissions under different reliability conditions. The optimal system configuration and operating plan were also found and the results were interpreted.

In the first layer, a dynamic optimal power flow (DOPF) routine is embedded in a simulation algorithm that is run for each system configuration based on a set of operational rules to calculate the cost and reliability level of the system over one year. In the second layer, a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm uses the outputs of the first layer to optimize the location and capacity of wind turbines, PV panels, and grid-scale batteries, in order to minimize cost while meeting reliability requirements. The proposed approach is tested on a 16-bus U.K. generic distribution system (GDS) under different grid availability conditions, and the results are reported. The merits and limitations of the proposed approach are discussed, and the differences between it and rule-free constrained optimization approaches are highlighted.

The objective is to study the effect of small thickness on the strength of materials when subjected to bending. The instrument consists of a MEMS actuator, 2mm × 3mm in size, and 20μm deep. It is employed to study an annealed Al cantilever sample, 110nm thick, 2μm wide and 15μm long, fabricated by evaporation. The sample yields at 841M Pa during the first cycle of loading. It is then unloaded and reloaded, when yielding occurs at 1200M Pa. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported experiment on free standing submicron metal film subjected to bending.
