The multiparametric and interdisciplinary data-bases now available can be used in studies of ecosystems or processes like ecology of seagrass bed, biodiversity of macroalgae, study of trophic food webs, marine ecotoxicology, impact of climate changes on phyto- and zooplankton dynamics, jellyfish dynamics in changing waters, carbon cycle and air - water CO2 fluxes, statistical data analysis and modelling into assimilation approaches, including nested coastal models, development of ecological quality criteria for measuring ecosystem quality and effectiveness of management applications. The database now available, is not only an archive of measurements done in the Bay of Calvi during more than 35 years but is really a tool to exploit and to disseminate the results of years of research...

The availability of IKONOS stereo pairs has made it possible to generate Digital Surface Models o... more The availability of IKONOS stereo pairs has made it possible to generate Digital Surface Models of IKONOS data. Though it is possible to obtain a DSM from two images with a different viewing angle on the same area, it is preferred to work with products ordered as stereo. Such stereo pairs have images that are made in the same orbital pass, resulting in a much better geometry of the stereo model. In this paper the accuracy of an IKONOS derived DSM of urban areas is assessed, based on DSMs from aerial photography and laser scanning. The quality and accuracy of a DSM derived from IKONOS stereo pairs has been assessed for test zones in two cities, Ghent and Liege. The test zones are characterized by a typical urban morphology (city center, residential, industry). The accuracy has been assessed for each of the different types of urban morphology in the study areas. Remembrement et érosion

L’augmentation de la surface des parcelles et par là-même l’augmentation du facteur pente (L.S. m... more L’augmentation de la surface des parcelles et par là-même l’augmentation du facteur pente (L.S. moyen + 13%) et, accessoirement, la diminution de surfaces semées perpendiculairement à la pente (P moyen + 1%) aggravent le risque érosif. Cette augmentation du risque érosif, le remembrement pourrait y remédier. En effet, dans les trois premiers quartiers du remembrement étudié, l’augmentation du risque érosif est due à la fois à l’agrandissement des parcelles et au nouveau redécoupage parcellaire qui a favorisé le semis parallèle à la pente. Dans le quatrième quartier par contre, l’augmentation du risque érosif résultant de l’agrandissement des parcelles a été compensée par une réduction du semis parallèle à la pente. Il apparaît donc que le nouveau découpage parcellaire, en favorisant le semis perpendiculaire à la pente, peut annuler l’augmentation du risque érosif résultant de l’agrandissement des parcelles. De plus, les nouveaux chemins sont susceptibles de réduire l’érosion tant par leur tracé lui-même que par leur incidence sur le nouveau parcellaire. Quant aux inconvénients érosifs résultant de ces nouveaux chemins ils peuvent être évités par des mesures adéquates. Il va de soi que les remembrements ne sont et ni ne peuvent être conçus exclusivement en vue de lutter contre l’érosion des sols. Néanmoins, si dans la conception des remembrements, il était tenu compte de la possibilité de lutter contre l’érosion, il ne fait aucun doute que leur réalisation pourrait conduire à une diminution sensible du risque érosif alors qu’actuellement ils contribuent à augmenter celle-ci. La présente note ne vise pas à apporter de solutions aux problèmes posés par l’érosion dans les remembrements. Elle se donne simplement pour but d’attirer l’attention sur l’importance du phénomène et ses conséquences. Jusqu’à présent, en effet, il semble qu’on s’est montré, par le passé, insuffisamment attentif à ces problèmes alors que l’érosion est responsable d’une perte de rendement moyenne de l’ordre de 3 à 5% (A. Bollinne et al., 1978)

Cities are experiencing increased pressure on social, economic, and environmental sectors due to ... more Cities are experiencing increased pressure on social, economic, and environmental sectors due to the rapid urbanisation and increasing risk owing to climate change affecting the urban environment. Solutions such as green roofs are often discussed in the context of smart and sustainable cities as they present a multi-functional and solution-oriented approach to address these challenges. Green roofs become extremely relevant in the context of highly urbanised and compact cities where impervious surfaces are abundant. Therefore, in this paper, we analyse the potential of green roofs at a city scale with the help of parameters such as area and slope of the roof and structure of the building. We also identify the priority zones based on environmental and socioeconomic parameters. The study is carried out in the city of Liege, Belgium. The results suggest that around 20% (350 hectares) of the total buildings in the city have the potential for developing green roofs. Moreover, the potential of green roofs is quite significant in terms of roof area in the priority zone. Due to significant socioeconomic deprivation in high priority zones, implementation of green roofs might not be affordable. Buildings with larger roof sizes are mostly owned by companies or commercial establishments, thus, making larger roofs more relevant for retrofitting green roof. Thus, our approach can act as a preliminary decision-making tool for urban planners to analyse the potential of green roofs and prioritize them in deprived areas.

Sealed surfaces play an important role in the hydrology of strongly urbanised catchments. They prevent water from infiltrating into the soil and water runs off faster than under natural conditions. As such an increase of these surfaces due to urbanisation will most likely have a considerable effect on the amount and intensity of the generated surface runoff. Within the framework of the MAMUD project (www.mamud.be) one of the aims was to assess the impact of urbanisation on hydrology in Dublin. Main focus is the use of earth observation based techniques to measure, understand and model urban dynamics and its impact on life and environment. Using a time-series of medium resolution satellite images (Landsat and SPOT - 1988, 1994, 1997, 2001 and 2006) urban development within the Greater Dublin Area was monitored, resulting in a set of urban masks. A land-use change trajectory analysis ensured the consistency of the sequence of urban masks and allowed correction in time. Additionally, instead of using subjectively defined expertbased average sealed surface values for static land-use classes, direct earth observation based estimates of sealed surface cover were used. These were obtained by applying a regression-based sub-pixel classification approach. Finally a land-use change model (MOLAND) was used to develop a number of urban growth scenarios for Dublin. The consistent urban masks and sealed surface fractions were integrated into a hydrological model. Use was made of the fully distributed, physically based rainfall-runoff model WetSpa, which was adapted for flexible input of remote sensing derived model parameters. The remote sensing supported hydrological model was applied on the River Tolka catchment. The results show that urban land use, with a rather limited coverage, accounts for a considerable amount of the generated surface runoff. The timeseries of five sub-pixel sealed surface maps (1988, 1994, 1997, 2001 and 2006) was used to assess the urban growth processes and simulate the effects on hydrology. The simulations with sub-pixel sealed surface proportions yield considerable differences in discharge, confirming the importance of sealed surface cover as a key factor in describing the hydrological dynamics in urban catchments. The results of one urban growth scenario suggest an even bigger impact of urbanisation on runoff in the future.
